St Kieran’s,
Traditionally black has been the colour associated with mourning, but since the Second Vatican Council, white vestments are worn at the celebration of a funeral. This is to emphasise the connection between the joy of the resurrection of Jesus and the hope of all believers that they, too, will share this resurrection.

PARISH SOCIAL/OPEN MIC NIGHT
REMEMBRANCE PRAYER SERVICE
For children we have never or can no longer hold
St Kieran’s Church Wednesday November 9th at 7.30pm
During the month of November we focus our thoughts and prayers on those who have died, not only on All Souls Day but throughout the entire month of remembrance as well.
Some in our community have experienced the loss of a child through miscarriage, stillbirth or abortion or have been separated from their children through breakdown in marriages in divorce. This loss is often experienced both by the parents and also the extended family who look for a way of entrusting their sorrow to an understanding God. A Remembrance Prayer Service will be held at St Kieran’s Church on Wednesday evening 9 November at 7.30pm as a way of offering support and comfort to those who mourn the loss of children we have never held or can no longer hold. All parishioners are welcome.

Reflections on The Joy of Love (Amoris Laetitia) Each week we read an extract from Pope Francis’ letter and reflect on how it might relate to our family lives.
The questions I would put to parents are these: “Do you seek to understand ‘where’ our children are in their journey? Where is their soul, do we really know? And above all, do we want to know? (Amoris Laetitia #261) For parents the real question is not where our children are physically, or whom they are with at any given time, but rather where they are existentially, where they stand in terms of their convictions, goals, desires and dreams. As a family we need to find opportunities to discuss important things, to cultivate a multitude of
healthy ways to spend time and to encourage critical/right thinking in our children.

Dear Fellow Parishioners, November 6th. 2016
During this month of November we are encouraged to wonder at God’s promise that we will all be ‘raised up ‘by the Lord to a new and resurrected life. On Wednesday, the Feast on which we honour the Holy Souls, (as well as for the rest of the month) we are encouraged to remember our dear dead, to reaffirm the bond of love that we shared during their time on earth, and to take comfort in the inexhaustible grace that surrounds them eternally which is also poured into our lives to protect us from any evil that might assail us. St. Augustine speaks about his family and friends who have died as if they are just
around the corner. He had this to say about a particular young man who died when they were in their early thirties: “He now rests in Abraham’s bosom. Whatever may be meant by this, there dwells my own Nebridius, my dear friend. There he lives on. He no longer waits for the words from my lips, but his own lips stoop to heavenly springs . . . to unending bliss. Yet I do not believe that this will satisfy and fill him to the point of forgetting me, since you, Lord, at whose source he drinks, are mindful of us all”. [Confessions 9,3] And so we are in a two-way communication with those who now rest in Abraham’s bosom to the
extent we hold them in our hearts with love for the rest of our lives, and they take us with them into
the very arms of God. What God offers each one of us, along with our loved ones, is the
compassionate care of the One ‘who wipes away the tears from every cheek’, who removes the
veil of mortality that has separated us, and pours his love into our hearts in abundance. With the
coming of Jesus into human history the reality of death has forever been changed into an
awareness of a new and more intense level of existence that has always been our destiny but
which is now abundantly clear as he points to a God, not of the dead, but of
the living; from whom we take comfort that “for to him all people [living and
dead] are in fact alive”.
Attached to the bulletin next week will be donation envelopes for the second Charitable Works Fund (CWF) appeal for the year. The CWF is a centralised fund for the support
of charitable and pastoral activities of the Diocese that extend beyond the limits of any single parish. These organisations include the Confraternity of Christian
Doctrine, St Lucy’s School, St Edmond’s School, Ephphata Centre and Centrecare Broken Bay. The funds are raised by bequests, public donations and a quota on each parish. There are three CWF collections in the parish each year to enable us to raise funds towards our quota. This year our quota is $43,312.00 and to date we have raised $10,112.00. Donations to the CWF are fully tax-deductible.
There will be a Multicultural Mass on Sunday 27th November at 2pm at St Mary’s Cathedral in the city with representation from as many Ethnic groups that would like to participate. The readings, prayers of the faithful and songs will be in various languages. After
the Mass there will be afternoon tea and a multicultural dance and song spectacular on the steps of the Cathedral celebrating the diversity and richness in our Australian church. All communities are asked to bring biscuits and cakes to share for afternoon tea outside the crypt after the celebration. All are welcome.
