ST. BERNARD OF CLAIRVAUX CHURCH BRADFORD, PA
As we celebrate Easter a little bit different this year, I want to share with you the image of the
butterfly that you may see portrayed on Easter Cards or on Easter banners in our churches. A
butterfly emerging from the cocoon is a symbol of metamorphous, transformation, hope, and
eternal life. As an Easter symbol, the caterpillar stands for Jesus’ life on earth, the cocoon
portrays His crucifixion and burial, and the butterfly represents the Resurrection. So, let us
never take for granted the simple butterfly.
What is the significance of Jesus’ visit after the resurrection? Remember that His followers had
forgotten the message He previously told them that in three days He would rise. They found
themselves in despair and grief, and a sense of hopelessness. The women who went to the
tomb early that Easter Sunday, were going only to finish the Jewish burial process, the were not
expecting to see what they saw. An angel who said to them: “Why do you search for Jesus of
Nazareth; he is risen as He said.” In another account of the scene at the tomb, Mary sees who she thinks is a gardener and
says to him: “Where have you taken Him?” The reply is her name, Mary, and by the sound of her name she comes to
recognize Jesus. She is then given the message to go to the apostles and tell them that He is risen. She does as she is told;
then both Peter and John run to the tomb to see. Peter sees an empty tomb and the clothes folded neatly. John, as scripture
says, saw and believed.
There were two more visits by Jesus – first, the Emmaus journey and second, the apostles in the upper room. What is the
importance of the Emmaus journey? A husband and wife returning home, deep in sorrow, because Jesus was put to death,
their hopes and belief in Him dashed. All of a sudden, this stranger comes up and asks them why they are so sad. Then He
begins to explain the scriptures to them; He has supper with them. He takes the bread and breaks it and at that moment their
eyes were opened. The knew then that the stranger was Jesus. Like the husband and wife, we too come to recognize Jesus in
the breaking of the bread, the Mass. Then, in the upper room, the apostles are both scared and lost. The doors of the room
are bolted shut for they think that they will be next to be tortured. Their grief has closed the doors of their hearts to the words
of Jesus that in three days He would rise. What does Jesus do? He goes through the locked doors of the room and opens the
locked doors of their hearts. Notice what He does not do. He does not shout at them; he does not ridicule them. All He says is
my peace be with you. Jesus breathes His presence upon them. Even with that they were not quite sure. They thought that
they were seeing a ghost. So, what does He do to reassure them? He asks for something to eat. Now they relax and know
that it is Jesus.
So, what then is the significance of these two stories? From Emmaus we are reminded that it is Jesus who teaches at Mass -
from the reading of Scripture, to the homily. Also, at Mass, we continue to recognize Jesus in the breaking of the bread – the
consecration. From the upper room, we see the gentleness of Jesus and that same gentleness He offers to us. It is through
their eyes that we come to believe in the risen Jesus. Matthew, in his gospel, has an interesting side note “while they were
going, some of the guard went into the city and told the chief priests all that happened. They assembled with the elders and
took counsel; they gave a large sum of money to the soldiers, telling them, ‘you are to say, His disciples came by night and
stole him while we were asleep”. (Matthew 28:11-15) To use a modern term, just a little bit of fake news. We know, from
Scripture, the Apostles were too scared to do such a thing. Secondly, it would have been unthinkable that a Roman guard
would be asleep on duty. It is through the eyes of the people who Jesus visited after His resurrection that we have come to
believe. Have a Happy and Blest Easter.
God Bless, Fr. Ray
