Getting the show off the ground

In 2006, Ross Mihalko, a playwright and storyteller, sees “The Nutcracker”. He loves the performance, but finds the lack of story in the second act hugely disappointing. He begins to dream of creating a children’s show that tells a full story through dance and theatre. In 2007, Ross Mihalko writes, illustrates and publishes his second children’s book: “The Caterpillar’s Wings”. Along the way he gets the idea that the book’s inspiring journey, of the very first caterpillar ever to fly, would be a perfect fit for his dream of a dance-theatre piece. In 2008, Ross pitches the project to the University of North Carolina School of the Arts film scoring masters’ class. It is there that he meets Tamara Douglas-Morris, who leaps at the chance to write the music for the project; and she’s more than qualified for the job: Tamara’s thesis work in ethnomusicology at City University in London had previously and successfully combined the sounds of nature with live instruments. Her talents and sensibilities are perfect to create the wonderful, wild score of “The Caterpillar’s Wings”. In 2010, with the music nearly completed, Ross begins to look for a choreographer. His search leads him to Karla Finger-Coghill, an acclaimed modern dance artist with a rich background in ballet, jazz and contemporary styles. In 2011, Karla’s diverse dance abilities match well with Tamara’s eclectic music and the wide array of crazy critters from Ross’ original story to create a fun-loving dance/theatre show that the whole family can enjoy. And that, as they say, is the beginning of that. *In 2012, “The Caterpillar’s Wings” will have it’s European premiere in Paris, France at the Studio Théâtre de Stains in a brand new show developed by Marjorie Nakache. www.studiotheatrestains.fr ** Also in 2012, Creative Giant Productions is planning a national multi-city tour of “The Caterpillar’s Wings – A Dream of Flight”.
