Director’s Notes:

Welcome to Pickwick Players’ production of Zombie Prom. Zombie Prom, an Off-Broadway musical, was also adapted into a short fi lm, based on John Dempsey’s fi ctional story of a teenage boy who is brought back to life by the love of his high-school sweetheart. It was fi rst produced at the Red Barn Theatre, Key West, Florida in 1993. It opened off-Broadway at the Variety Arts Theatre in 1996. The fi lm adaptation played in 2006 at a number of fi lm festivals, receiving 4-star reviews and awards including Best Short Film. The cast featured RuPaul as Principal Strict.

When I fi rst read Zombie Prom, I thought it was a perfect fi t for Pickwick Players. Although it is not a junior production or originally performed with youth, it is a show about the life of teenagers in the nuclear fi fties, which allowed for the casting of teens, youths and adults. And, there’s no denying that Zombies have “risen” in pop culture with television shows like Walking Dead, cult movie classics like Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, and their more recent campy counterparts Shaun of the Dead and Zombieland.

The 1950s was a time of innocence and also a time of nuclear proliferation, the building of nuclear plants and the heart of the Cold War. It was a time of building the box houses that all looked alike in the ideal suburban setting. It was a time when we wanted everyone to be like us and to be the same. So, it is no surprise that American youth rebelled and tried to break free to fi nd themselves, not as the same, but as different and unique from everyone else.

Zombie Prom is a loving tribute and campy spoof to these times. The music is inspired by 50s doo-wop and rock-n-roll. Our production is meant to be a pastiche of 1950’s comic books, B-movies and fi lm musicals of the time.

The talent of the creative team, cast, designers, and crew is outstanding, and they all need to be recognized. I truly thank all of them for their professionalism, expertise and hard work. If for just one moment we can take your mind off your daily grind and / or even make you laugh and smile, we have done our job. So whether you lived during the Atomic Age, having to “Duck and Cover”, or are experiencing it for the fi rst time, sit back, relax and prepare yourself for a radioactive blast.

Thanks,Thomas Fitzpatrick
