Casa de Paz y BienFra nciscan Values at the Franciscan Renewal Center

Several weeks ago I shared with you the work Father Joe and I did with Kathleen Flanagan surroundinour FRC business model. I would like to share with you some of the core values we collaborated on wstaff during that period of study. These behaviors are how we on staff work to emanate goodness withour community and our guests. We value relationship over efficiency. We dont own the results God does.Intuition is a superior form of knowing over rationality. We accept interruptions as potential opportunities for cooperation with the Spirit. We look to the coincidence of opposites for answers. We trust in providence.Proactive collaboration and cooperation honors our interdependence yet accountability remains clear.Magnify the voice of the under-heard.Prayerful discernment.

Within the context of spiritual growth, attendance equals success.Potential for spiritual growth and transformation equals success. Our priority is cooperation with the Spirit. Although some of these sound quite theological, they stir inside and create a culture that embodiesFranciscan values. What does it mean to say one is Franciscan in their being and behavior? Generosiof spirit, simplicity of nature and poverty through detaching from things that separate us from the loGod are three. Of course, there are more but this is plenty to begin with. Our staff works in communiwith hundreds of volunteers to provide services to those who visit for any number of our ministryresources. Our evaluations for staff are also based on these Franciscan behaviors and values.

Out team of staff and volunteers begin with right relationship in our daily interactions with guests andeach other. We certainly strive for efficiency but not at the expense of relationship. Improving our registration process, insuring our front desk is staffed with friendly and caring people (not to mention live person on the phone 12 hours a day versus machine), listening first before sharing our perspectivforgiving or asking for pardon when we have wronged, consoling and being present. Business demanefficiency and productivity and we are constantly working on new ways to improve systems. We beliegood systems set us free to provide the type of relationship building that is a most important Franciscavalue. My point is this, integrated deep into the core of our collective being, our primary purpose for existing

an institution is for supporting the friars ministry and mission, working side by side with the friars in tvision of inspiring and changing society toward peace and goodness, renewing lives. We do that hereleading people to Christ on that journey. We return the generous love of God by our service toothers. This spiritual oasis, called The Casa, takes one away from the distractions of modern life, andrecharges one to become closer to God. We do this through the lens of Franciscan spirituality.

Peace. Renew. Good.Charlie Brown, GM ~

Faith in ActionA Message from the Director:Labor Day is traditionally a time in churchcircles to reflect on the value of work andthe rights of workers. Over the last 120years, the Popes and Bishops have writtenextensively on the meaning of work and on

how to protect the rights of workers especially low-income workers. According to the US. CatholicBishops, work is more than a way to make a living. Itis a form of continuing participation in Gods creation. We are to add value to our world and seek to form itmore and more into a reflection of Gods kingdom. How we treat our co-workers, clients or customersadds value to our world. We can also all askourselves if the work we do builds-up rather than tears-down a segment of society or even someone in ourcommunity. In the end, does the work we do move ustowards a more loving, more peaceful, morecompassionate society?

The US Catholic Bishops also say that to protect thedignity of work, we need to respect the basic rights ofworkers. They list these rights as: the right toproductive work, to decent and fair wages, to theorganization and participation in unions, to privateproperty, and to economic initiative. The Valley interfaith Project of which the Casa is amember has been working for the last couple of yearson a job training program for the Phoenix area. It iscalled Arizona Career Pathways.

The following is an update on their progress:The VIP leadership team has been meeting withhealth care employers in the Valley and haveidentified three career tracks to offer our firstcandidates. These career tracks are: 1) Hospitalbased medical coding; 2) Lab Assistant; and 3)Physical therapy assistant. Each of these programswill give students a certification on the first rung of acareer ladder to good jobs in the allied health field.Last month, we held two orientation sessions forprospective students (you probably saw the noticeof these sessions in the Casa Bulletin). 115 people

from across the metro-area attended these sessionsand we already have received 38 applications backfrom some of these folks. Counselors will bemeeting with these applicants who must now gothrough a process of testing, placement, registrationfor financial aid and classes at Phoenix College orGateway College, and remediation, if necessary.Although we had hoped to start student this fall, thereality is that it may be January before our first fullcohort will be in classes. If you want to volunteer tobe a mentor contact Margaret Snider [email protected]
