Letter to a Suffering Church: Pick Up Your Copy TodayIn a continued response to the call for healing in the global Church from the effects of the sexual abuse
“Letter to a Suffering Church.” Copies are free and available on the tables in the church and narthex.Published in July, Bishop Barron’s book addresses the recent scandals reported in the media and
why Catholics should remain rooted in their faith and continue to spread the gospel message, rather than turn away from it.
The book purchase is part of the parish’s Protecting God’s People initiative to address the pain caused by the abuse scandals in the global Church, and to find means to provide healing for individuals and the St. Joseph community overall. Please take a copy home for yourself and consider sharing it with a friend.

With so much information from the media and other resourc-es reporting and commenting about the sexual abuse crisis in the global Church, there are times when we all may wonder where we can turn to discern the truth, as well as to find materials to help us pray for healing, both for ourselves and the Church in the world. To help parishioners, St. Joseph has added a new page to its parish website to help Catholics process and reflect on the cur-rent abuse crisis. We know this page is an imperfect answer and won’t heal the hurt caused by this betrayal of trust. However, we do trust in God’s work and in God’s ability to turn even the worst brokenness into goodness and holiness through the healing power of Christ. To learn more, visit www.stjoseph-libertyville.org/addressing-

Dear Parishioners,
Mass in the Parkplans to celebrate Mass outside, but we were successfully able to move inside thanks to our hardworking volunteers.
I would like to offer a special “thank you” to Gerry Salzman. Gerry’s passion for community and fellowship initiated Mass in the Park seven years ago and it has now become a favorite tradition here at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Gerry and his committee coordinate the volunteers, food, entertainment, set-up, and every detail for this event. His enthusiasm, organization and leadership have been critical to the success of Mass in the Park and instrumental in the growth of this event’s continual extension into the community.

St. Mary of Vernon Catholic ChurchAll are welcome Christ Renews His Parish
As Disciples of Christ, we strive to live humbly and committed to the Kingdom of GodWhom does God the Father see when He looks at you? Does He see someone proud with what they have made of themselves—of what they have accomplished in life? Or does He see someone who looks like (who bears the image of) Jesus, His only Begotten Son? We, who believe in Jesus, bear the title of “Christian.” But who do others see when they look at you? Do they see an image of the person you created yourself to be? Or do they see someone who truly bears the image and likeness of our Lord, Jesus Christ? When you come to the end of your life, will God recognize you as HIS child or will He say “I do not know who you are?”

Networking is, by far, the most successful route to success in landing in a new job. More than
some form of networking. Please join us for the next meeting of the Employment Ministry to learn more from Paul Duski, a Lake County relation-ship-builder and networking coach, who will present “Networking & Relationship Building”. Paul will provide practical information on all aspects of the networking pro-cess, and will show you, step-by-step, how to build relation-ships and put successful networking techniques into practice. This is also an opportunity to meet members of your local community who you may be able to help or who may be help-ful to you.

conception, just four months before we will cele-brate his birth. His fingers and toes formed, Mary could feel Jesus “touch” her. Initially, it was like the flutter of a butterfly, but it was growing stronger day-by-day. I can imagine Jesus calling to her, “Thank you for taking care of me! I don’t have a ruler or scale
touch when I get out of here? Will I have the chance to change someone’s life?”
For those who have joined others in spiritually adopt-ing a child this year, that’s the precious potential we hold up in prayer. For those of you who are just hearing

-ed in spirit the life of an unborn child, mother and
father—someone we know or perhaps not, but each very special in the eyes of our Creator. Whose lives
will they touch and change? Let us pray. “Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I love you very much. I beg you to protect and nurture the lives of every mother and father and their unborn babies, especially the one I have spiri-tually adopted.”

Thoughts on Giving Our standards in society are different from God’s standards. We often rank people by what they have, how powerful they are, or how successful they are. Jesus reminds us that God will not judge us by the same earthly standards. When God asks you, “what have you done with the gifts I have given you?” How will you respond?

A Journey to Discipleship–Jesus Companions Us Through Scripture
Next Sunday’s Gospel — Luke 14:1, 7-14 Luke Glory to You, O Lord
Readings for the Week
Reflection This Sunday’s Gospel warns us about the vice of pridefulness. Whenever we seek attention, status or treasure, we
were admonished that “the first shall be last and the last shall be first” in this week’s Gospel, next week we hear that those who are
us about the danger of focusing on material success. Whether it be the stories about the ‘eye of the needle’, the ‘narrow gate’ or ‘big-ger barns’, we are forewarned that our efforts to inflate our world presence will ultimately work against our spiritual well-being. Instead, we are encouraged to focus, in humility, on our place in the world as children of God. We are not to concern ourselves
no further than the model of the cross where Christ “emptied Himself, taking on the form of a slave, coming in human likeness;
Being humble can be very difficult in our society as we are regularly encouraged to feel good about ourselves. The Christian writer, C.S. Lewis, when reflecting on the quote “Humility is not thinking less of oneself but in thinking of one’s self less” advises “The first step is to realize that one is proud.” While we should rejoice over our goodness, talents and treasures, we must always recognize that those things are not of our own making but are gifts from God. Let us imitate Jesus in living in humility and gratitude for the gifts we have received.
For further reflection on humility, seek out (google it) and pray the Litany of Humility attributed toCatechism of the Catholic Church
Reflection Questions -aged to seek God’s plan for our lives and to surrender to His holy will. In what areas of my life do I resist submitting to God’s will for me or my family? How might I get more comfortable with having God in charge?
reconcile myself to Christ’s teaching?
On a sabbath Jesus went to dine at the home of one of the leading Pharisees, and the people there were observing him carefully. He told a parable to those who had been invited, notic-ing how they were choosing the places of honor at the table. “When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet,
-guished guest than you may have been invited by him, and the host who invited both of you may approach you and say, ‘Give your place to this man,’ and then you would proceed with embarrassment to take the lowest place.
so that when the host comes to you he may say, ‘My friend,
move up to a higher position.’ Then you will enjoy the esteem of your companions at the table. For every one who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.” Then he said to the host who invited him, “When you hold a lunch or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or your wealthy neighbors, in case
when you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind; blessed indeed will you be because of their inability to repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrec-tion of the righteous.”The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
