Seniors who keep busy with family, friends and volunteer work score higher in memory tests, a studysuggests. Findings by The American Journal of Public Health show that strong social interaction throughfriends, family and community groups can enhance our brain health as we age and that social isolationmay be an important risk factor for cognitive decline in seniors.

Researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health used data gathered from the Health and RetirementStudy, a large, nationally representative sample of American adults aged 50 and older. Participants tookmemory tests at two-year intervals during the course of the study. Researchers read a list of 10 commonnouns to participants who were then asked to recall as many words as possible immediately. They did soagain after a five-minute delay. The researchers also measured social integration based on marital status, volunteer activities and contact with parents, children and neighbors.

When the results were analyzed, it showed that participants who were involved in a lot of social activityalso had the slowest rate of memory decline. In fact, study participants who had the highest socialintegration scores showed less than half the rate of memory loss when compared to those who were theleast socially active.

To reap the rewards of good mental health seniors must remain socially engaged and participate inactivities that are meaningful, not only to the individual, but to the group or community as a whole.Involvement in a community or group can garner similar memory benefits as engaging in memorytraining or using memory techniques to enhance learning and memory skills. It is also more meaningfuland has added benefits - contentment, greater self-esteem, optimism and overall greater self-confidence.

You probably remember your own grandparents telling you stories of their childhood—theirstruggles, triumphs, and what it was like growing up back then. And you loved it all. Well nowit’s your turn. Connect the past to the present by giving your family the greatest gift of all—agenealogy. Your children, grandchildren, and future generations will thank you.

It's common when starting a family tree to feel a bit overwhelmed, wondering where to begin. But, according to Kory Meyerink an accredited genealogist at ProGenealogists, Inc., the firstperson to help you with the research is right in the room: you! “Begin by writing down when andwhere you were born. Then, jot down your parents’ information, including when their siblingswere born,” says Meyerink. This can be done on something called a Family Group Sheet whichoften includes marriage dates and places, and for every deceased family member, dates and placesof death.

A good family history tells a story about an individual or a certain family. Much can be learnedby using diaries, journals, newspaper articles, family documents, letters or scrapbooks that werehanded down over the generations. Learning more about the each familyancestor: their likes, dislikes, interests, skills and achievements isfascinating.

Ultimately, a genealogy project could take anywhere from a week, to puttogether a simple Family Group Sheet, to six months or longer, to build acomplex family tree using online resources like Ancestry.com or 23andme.comwhich uses DNA to discover your family connections. Regardless of a project's scope, the end result will be the same: a better understanding and appreciation of where

you’ve come from, a real-life family story to pass on to your loved ones.

Teotihuacan: City of Water, City of Fire will explore how artworks from the ancient cityshape our understanding of Teotihuacan as an urban environment. One of the earliest, largest,

and most important cities in the ancient Americas, Teotihuacan is now a UNESCO WorldHeritage Site and the most visited archaeological site in Mexico. The exhibition, organized in

collaboration with Mexico’s Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH), will feature recent, never-before-seen archaeological discoveries and other major loans

from Mexican and US cultural institutions. Monumental and ritual objects from Teotihuacan’sthree pyramids will be shown alongside mural paintings, ceramics, and stone sculptures

from the city’s apartment compounds. By bringing these pieces together, and encouragingvisitors to understand the context of specific sites within the city, the exhibition will provide

a rare opportunity for Bay Area audiences to experience a significant place in Mexico's culturallandscape—the captivating and mysterious ancient city of Teotihuacan.

When we traveled to Bend, Oregon, we stopped for breakfast in Williams, Ca. As we were leaving, the local paper, Territorial Dispatch, caught my attention with a column titled ENHANCEDLIVING by author, Debbie Petersen who had recently passed away. If I’d known her, I’m surewe would have had much in common. I want to share some of her important and insightful thoughtswith you mixed in with some of my views.

In December we generally dash about buying gifts for all those we love, however we usually forgetthe one important person we should love the most . I have often written aboutthis subject because of its importance and how it affects every aspect of our lives. I am referringto “forgiveness.” Our own happiness and peace of mind comes from being able to forgivefor things we may or may not have done, and others for the way they have hurt us emotionally orphysically. Forgiveness has no boundaries that contain the kind of hurts we’ve given and orreceived both intentionally and unintentionally. For instance an alcoholic father is too sick to seehow he damages his family, therefore a son or daughter may feel justified in hating that fatherforever, thereby damaging themselves and all those who love them. A vicious circle.

Petersen says, “Picture a triangle and place pride at the top and then selfishness and fear as thebottom points of the triangle. Pride, selfishness and fear are the three things that trip us up.”Most of us think we are beyond those three, but if you’re irritated because someone is taking toolong in line ahead of you, IT IS PRIDE. If someone hurts your feelings, IT IS PRIDE.

As with anything worthwhile, it takes perfect practice to accomplish this. But first we have to beable to recognize and admit that we behave that way. Once we do, it is easier to battle and correct.Of course we may falter, but then we just pick ourselves up and try to do better. We are muchhappier when we succeed. Unhappiness comes from not forgiving. To be unforgiving causes usto be bitter, resentful, (hateful) and unbending. Clearly it is pride that makes us feel justified inholding on to those heavy ugly resentful feelings even though they may have been justified at thetime and made us feel better, in the long run, it ruins our health, and our relationships, for itcannot be hidden.

We are afraid to love for fear of not being able to trust. We areselfish because we want to hold on to the hate/resentment. We are justified we have convincedourselves. And selfish because we are spiteful, denying the person who offended us, the same peaceof mind that we too deserve to have. It is clear that no man is an island. And one person’snegative energy affects the energy of all those who live, work and associate with us.

We wish you a Happy Holidays season filled with self love, forgiveness and the happiness thatcomes from that simple but important act.
