The Caribbean Coast: FeaturesCosta Rica's Caribbean province of Limon runs 125 miles (200 km), from the northern Nicaraguan border to the southern border with Panama.

Limn: Origen of the NameAs the story goes, a solitary lemon (limn in Spanish) tree was growing at the proposed site and gave the port its name.

AttractionsThere is a lot of attractions in the Caribbean Coast. The followings are some of them:

Aviarios del CaribeFollowing Highway 26 south of Puerto Limon, the river valley breathes life into the tropical vegetation. Here, 31 km south of town, is the small wildlife refuge of Aviarios del Caribe in the Estrella River delta.

Barbilla National ParkThe Barbilla National Park protects 29,500 acres (11,938 hectares) of humid lowland rainforest along the Caribbean slopes of the Talamancan mountain range. As one of Costa Ricas least visited parks, it has the distinction of being both relatively untouched and ecologically rich.

Barra del Colorado National Wildlife RefugeLocated on the Nicaraguan boarder, is this massive 225,365 acre (91,200 ha) national wildlife refuge-the largest in the nation. Much of this refuge is inaccessible to eco-tourists due to poor roads and infrastructure which have kept Barra Del Colorado an isolated wonder.

Cahuita National Park

At 2,711 acres (1,097 ha), Cahuita National Park is small in size compared to its counterparts. The park is much more regarded for its underwater portion. This national park is the park with Costa Rica's largest costal reef.

E.A.R.T.H. UniversityAn agricultural college with a focus on investigating sustainable agriculture in tropical environments, E.A.R.T.H. University (Escuela de Agricultura de la Region Tropical Hmeda) is located in the town of Gucimo. This non-prophet, private university encompasses 990 acres (400 ha) of lowland forest, including a large, 570,280 square foot (52,980 sq. km) campus.

Gandoca-Manzanillo National Wildlife Refuge Located in Costa Rica&s southeastern Talamanca region is the large Gandoca-Manzanillo Refuge, a collection of rainforest and wetland habitat complete with a coral reef. At 23,348 total acres (9,450 ha). Besides Cahuita, this park is the only other place in the country with a coral reef.

Hitoy-Cerere Biological ReserveLocated 60 km south of Puerto Limon is the 22,620 acre (9154 ha) Hitoy-Cerere Biological Reserve, a rugged and undeveloped park that offers few facilities despite its proximity to a major highway. Visitors can find plenty of accommodations in Puerto Limon and Cahuita, two nearby beach towns.

Tortuguero National ParkAdjacent to the Barra del Colorado National Wildlife Refuge is the more well-known and frequented; Tortuguero National Park, is home to four of the world's eight species of green sea turtle including Leatherback, Olive Ridley, Loggerhead, and Hawksbill turtles.

Located in the heart of Costa Rica's banana growing region, Gupiles is the nations gateway between the central highlands and the Caribbean coast. Getting to Gupiles is easy by both bus and car. Highway 32 runs directly. Transportation time is about an hour.

Other Places of InterestLIMNPuerto Limn, or simply Limn, is the heart and soul of the Caribbean. This is the region's largest city, with a population of approximately 85,000.Getting to Puerto Limn is quick and easy. Highway 32 leads directly. The trip via car will take about 2.5 hours, or a bit longer by bus.
