Ah, retirement. It’s like a lovely dream. You sleep in. Have coffee while watching waves from the beach

house. No more business attire. You wear khaki’s and comfortable shoes and take the grand-kids fishing.

Until the dream ends as the alarm sounds because it’s time for work and besides you don’t own a beach house you don’t have grand-kids and your fishing license has probably expired. So, wake up sunshine. These bills aren’t gonna pay themselves…

Someone once asked Bernard Shaw what, in his opinion, was the most beautiful thing in this world.

“Youth,” he replied, “is the most beautiful thing in this world—and what a pity that it has to be wasted on children!”

Well I would argue that if youth is wasted on the young, then retirement is unfairly reserved for the old. It’s all I could think during my tour of Arcadia Senior Living—on a sunny day in July two weeks before they would officially open their doors to new residents.

The tour showcased a facility that seemed more like an upscale dorm where all kinds of fun would be in store. It occurred to me that at the end of the tour, I might simply refuse to leave. If they forced me out, I would get legal counsel and argue that I shouldn’t be discriminated against because of my age. I would point out that none of us are getting any younger.

The apartments were beautifully furnished and there was so much to do. There was a workout room where I saw myself finally getting ripped. A kitchen with a fantastic chef was where I would eat only healthy food. There was a coffee shop, Internet lounge, movie theatre and a billiards room with card tables where I was pretty certain I could beat

unsuspecting old timers at blackjack or at the very least learn to play bridge. I suddenly realized that the only thing wrong with this senior living facility is that I’m not yet retired.

Of course, I am a professional and I take my responsibility seriously to share with readers not just the world I wish we had, but the world as it is. And when my tour reached the Memory Care wing of the new facility, I was impressed but also caught off guard. The same attention to detail that made Independent Living engaging, was applied to another level of senior care.

Candie Gray, the Executive Director of Arcadia Senior Living explained that the vignettes displayed in the wide hallways were not part of the decorative palette. They were designed specifically for dementia patients who often regress toward early childhood, or other specific periods from their pasts like time served in the military. The crib loaded with baby dolls, the display of military uniforms, the small childlike kitchen complete with miniature versions of plastic pots and pans suddenly made me realize that senior living isn’t just about sleeping in and catching fish.

In this issue, we showcase some of the locals helping make lives easier for seniors.

Row, Row, Row Your Boat…

Moving Matters was launched to help the downsize process run smoothly. Timesavers helps seniors stay comfortable wherever they chose to live, and Pathways advises them on how to use their resources efficiently when shopping for a senior care facility.

There are very real challenges facing people as they age and I was right about one thing—nobody is getting any younger. The fact that there are people willing to step up and help seniors in all facets of their lives makes Warren County a better place for everybody.

Keep your CoolF

inally, the summer months are upon us. The AC is up, the stress level is down, and everybody is outdoors from dawn until dusk. While summer brings the long-awaited sunshine, it’s important to

remember how to keep cool. We all encourage our loved ones to take proper precautions from the blistering sun when it’s at its peak — stay hydrated, take rests in the shade and know when you’ve had too much.

Heatstroke can pose a threat to humans and animals alike, and it’s important to be aware of the warning signs for our pets.

Early symptoms of a dehydrated or overheated pet include tachycardia (high heart rate,) elevated respiratory rate, excessive panting with a very wide-open mouth and a tongue that hangs out of the pet’s mouth at great length. The tongue may also appear to be a dark red to bluish in color. You may notice dilated pupils and your pet may lie down and no longer wish to participate in activities they typically enjoy.

When the Heat Turns Up!

Page 9: THE CARE GIVERS - TownNews · medical procedure, only your CoolSculpting provider can help you decide if CoolSculpting is right for you. n the U.S., the CoolSculpting procedure is

Listen to their signals and allow them to rest. Find a good shady spot and some cool ground to lay on. Offer them a drink, but do not allow them to overdo water — small amounts frequently is a better idea. Continue to monitor your pet and make sure its condition doesn’t deteriorate.

Also pay attention to the weather. This is an important indicator if your pet should be playing outside or remain indoors. A nice, dry 85-degree day might be the perfect temp to let your pet run and play, but if that 85-degree day is accompanied by 80 percent humidity, STAY INSIDE. If it is warm enough outside to induce sweating in humans, it is too hot for pets. Dogs do not sweat and aren’t able to utilize this physiological method of cooling down like their two-legged counterparts. If you want safe, quality outdoor time in the summer months just wait a bit and send your pup out to play once the sun goes down. Enjoy a nice walk in the cooling cover of sunset or let your pup splash in a

pool or lake — an effective way to ensure your dog stays cool.

Lastly, be aware if you own a pet that is at a higher risk for heat exhaustion. Black dogs will absorb significantly more heat than white dogs and will suffer from heat stroke much more quickly. The animals most at risk for heatstroke also include the very young, very old, overweight and short-nosed breeds such as bulldogs and pugs.

If there is a sudden onset of weakness, disorientation or your pet becomes unsteady, that is a sign of great concern. If your pet’s gums appear pale or gray, you need to get your pet to the vet immediately. Seizures, permanent neurological or GI tract damage can occur and, in some cases, death. You may put your pet in a bath of tepid water, NOT COLD, and apply rubbing alcohol to the pads of your pets’ feet for immediate first aid. If you need to cool your pet down in this manner, call your vet immediately.

One last piece of advice: If you see a

pet left in a hot car in a parking lot, please call the authorities. Temperatures in a car rise to dangerous levels very quickly and your phone call could save a life. If you are not comfortable calling the police, give the license plate number to the store manager so the issue can be addressed immediately.

Follow this sage advice and you and your pet will safely enjoy the summer months. Keep the water dish (and your cooler) full and stay out of the extreme heat. Trust me, it’s the cool thing to do.

Timesavers Can Be LifesaversHow one Local Company Answers the Call

Elizabeth Downing and Paula Smith Dermody launched Timesavers Concierge, Caregiving & Chauffeur

in 2010, as a way to fill a niche and meet the needs of busy clients. Odd jobs, running errands, airport runs—is how Downing described the initial business idea.

The start-up that was born in Warren County now includes five other areas and serves Bowling Green, Glasgow, Franklin, Russellville, Scottsville, and Owensboro.

Beginning in 2011, when she encountered her first dementia care client, Downing says she made it her “mission” to educate herself as much as possible on how to work with this at risk population and their families.

Timesavers is not exclusively for seniors—nor is it specifically for people with memory issues, but Downing and crew offer a path for clients to retain their independence even if they face cognitive decline. It’s equal parts passion and profession.

“We make quality of life better and allow seniors to stay in their homes longer if that’s what they choose to do,” she explains.

The Timesavers website is robust and easy to navigate. In addition to the menu of options, there are links to resources on subjects from Kentucky Elder Law to a tool called Grace’s Umbrella where all vital medical, legal, and financial documents can be accounted for and organized.

Their services range from helping a homebound person get ready in the morning, to coming by to check on them and tuck them in at night. Making trips to the grocery store, feeding pets, booking travel or even meeting with “the cable guy” are all things that Timesavers does for clients, as well as 24/7 care.

Downing says she simply asks herself what she would want someone to do for her own mom if she and her siblings lived far away or were otherwise unable.

As it is, her mother is a sharp 95 year old with a “fantastic memory” who is still going strong.

But that doesn’t mean Downing can’t appreciate the predicament that others face when their parents or loved ones experience cognitive decline.

“To describe (Alzheimer’s) best: It’s a thief,” says Downing. “Every day it robs that individual of something and the family feels it too—like they’re losing someone.”

Elizabeth Downing is Director of Outreach for Timesavers Concierge, Caregiving & Chauffeur in Bowling Green, Kentucky. A 1982 graduate of WKU, Elizabeth is also an attorney, but found her passion in advocating and providing care for older adults and those with special needs. Elizabeth’s blog, at www.mytimesaversky.com/blog, seeks to raise awareness of issues relating to aging and caring for aging loved ones, and to let people know they are not alone in the journey. She has recently completed a Certificate in Care Management from Boston University, and facilitates two family caregiver support groups each month.

Downing points out that cognitive decline even goes on to affect the larger community, and believes everybody should learn strategies for helping mitigate its impact.

“It’s not just reading, it’s how you apply that practically on a day to day basis,” she explains. Recognizing when someone is struggling with the stigma of cognitive decline and knowing how to keep a situation from getting worse can be a learned behavior, says Downing.

She imagines an elderly patron ordering from a menu in a restaurant and repeating it over and over. The waitperson who can manage the situation is better for both parties.

She cites the work of occupational therapist Teepa Snow, a recognized expert who offers a lecture and video series on best-practice for helping those with neurocognitive decline. In Snow’s assessment, both patients and caregivers benefit when these skills are mastered.

“We should all try to educate ourselves in practical ways so that people are not stigmatized or divided from the rest of the community,” explains Downing. “Because if the individual with the illness starts to isolate and withdraw, then by necessity their caregiver will too.”

When entire families aren’t participating in things that have always been important in their lives like church or ballgames, Downing says we all lose a memory.

Caregivers need to know how to make the most of any situation. During construction of Arcadia—Bowling

Green’s newest Senior Living Community—staff operated from a temporary trailer and often shared an office phone line. But rugged conditions couldn’t dampen the enthusiasm of Community Relations Director, Tracey Ray as she outlined the mission and the property itself.

Arcadia Senior Living is built on seven acres off Lovers Lane. The 83,000 square feet three-story building offers independent living, assisted living, and memory care all under one roof. Residents will enjoy a long list of amenities many of which are included in the monthly rental fee.

As construction progressed, the crew was able to move from the trailer to their new offices.

One primary goal was to get Arcadia fully staffed before July 20th, opening day and that mission was a success, according to Executive Director Candie Gray.

In addition to hiring staff, they stayed busy arranging the priority reservations for the “First Fifty” program of new residents. As landscapers were planting trees and shrubs, kitchen staff, under the direction of Chef Michael Riggs, was busy honing menus and workflow for the various dining options throughout.

Brick by brick the entire facility has become a reality. Seventy-nine apartment style living spaces range from the studio to one and two bedroom units. The secured Memory Care Neighborhood features an outdoor garden and a private courtyard. Well-appointed with senior-friendly architectural elements like the Asura® adaptable shower system, and quieter more discreet VTAC systems for heating and cooling, Arcadia seems most like an upscale cruise ship or resort hotel.

Double occupancy even in the Memory Care wing makes the living situation at Arcadia unique. “That double occupancy sets us apart,” says Ray.

She says some couples struggle with the current model when one person needs

Memory Care but their spouse does not. At Arcadia there is the option for a person with cognitive decline to be safe and comfortable while the healthier spouse can easily participate in the social activities available to the larger community. It’s more flexible for everybody, Ray explains.

And it’s all on one campus. In addition to the shared spaces like

the Internet Lounge, the Fountain Square Bistro, and a dining room, which features indoor/outdoor restaurant style service, there are amenities like a theatre, a hair salon, and a senior-friendly fitness center.

And it’s not only people who can call Arcadia home. The dog park just taking shape at the back is being landscaped and fenced so that canine companions will also feel welcome here.

Gray stresses that Arcadia Senior Living Bowling Green is not a medical care facility. Third-party care is the standard, so the staff does help coordinate care for residents, but they don’t actually administer it.

One of the earliest new residents and her faithful companion already appreciate the hard work that went in to making Arcadia a reality.

Ginger and her dog Roxy are already enjoying their new home. Roxy is a rescue dog, so Ginger is not entirely sure of her age, but challenges anybody to “look at her muzzle” to know she’s certainly no spring chicken.

Nevertheless, the transition to Arcadia was smooth and easy for them. Having her was a non-negotiable element of senior living for Ginger and her husband John. She says they only moved in about three days before, but already felt at home. Coming in from a walk around the grounds, they stopped to share their thoughts on the new facility.

“It’s been wonderful,” says Ginger. Apparently Roxy embraced the new digs like a champ. She gets in and out of the elevator, comes up and down and around,” says Ginger.

As far as she and her husband, Ginger says they too are adapting quickly. The food she has had so far is “very, very good.”

She and John are considered Independent residents, but still she wears a lanyard around her neck with a push button FOB, which she says is designed to keep residents safe and to alert staff to their coordinates if they need help.

“If I am in the area of the building, I can push this button and they’ll find me right away,” she says.

When asked if she plans to engage in all the activities available she says she likes the way residents can choose whether or not to

interact and participate. She actually got props from her grandson when he saw the billiards room on-site. “We have grand-kids. The first time they came here, their mouths just dropped,” Ginger recalls.

Her children were a factor in choosing Arcadia, but it was really the amenities that made it special. She shares some of her personal life—the travels that led her to this place in time—from meeting her future husband, marrying, moving while raising children and finally settling in Louisville where she retired from HUD.

Before this facility was finished, they knew they liked it but they wanted to see first hand what Arcadia would look like when it was completely finished. So during construction, she and John made a trip to Clarksville to visit a newly opened sister property that is almost identical.

“We were very impressed. When we first looked, they were still building (Arcadia in Bowling Green) and it took awhile but they have really gotten this place in shape.”

She says Roxy didn’t really have an intake interview, but with a pet deposit and a relatively well-behaved animal, residents shouldn’t have trouble. “They (the staff ) got down on the floor, and talked to Roxy. They pet her. Definitely I would say this place is pet friendly,” she laughs.

Eventually, it’s time for them to move on. The heat becomes a little much for Roxy and she pants to let Ginger know she wants to go relax in the A/C.

“Ready to go inside where it’s cool? “ Ginger acknowledges as they head out. “Hey—I’m glad you hollered,” she adds as if she’s been in the neighborhood for years and I’m the newcomer.

“Me too. Enjoy your stay.”

mOving I MATTerS

Kathryn Oliver started a moving company but she doesn’t move things. Her company, Moving

Matters, moves people—specifically elderly clients— into senior living communities. Possessions are only part of that equation. For Oliver, it’s not simply about getting boxes packed and furniture hauled as quickly as possible. It’s something more organic.

Her goal is always to make the process seamless by looking out for those lose ends and sewing them up before they have a chance to unravel.

When she meets with a client, she brings her extensive knowledge of the amenities in and around Bowling Green. She carries along blueprints and measurements of the various floor plans from Chandler Park, Village Manor, Massey Springs, and Charter Senior Living ( formerly Bowling Green Retirement Village). If a client wants

to hang pictures in their new apartment, Oliver already knows the exact dimensions of the available wall space. If they need to organize and move a kitchen, she can put it all back together for them so they wake up and know exactly where the coffee is. These careful touches can come with as much or as little as the family requires and she says it’s different for each client.

Oliver calls herself a “Baby Boomer” and feels they have an advantage over the “Greatest Generation,” which preceded theirs. That’s because the Baby Boomers came of age in a marketplace where there are a variety of 55-Plus Senior Communities, and Assisted Living options, with everything from fine dining to massage therapists on site.

In Oliver’s view delaying the inevitable downsize can often dull the golden years. She says sometimes a crisis will prompt a situation that would have been better planned for. Her job is to make sure her

clients understand the benefit of taking action and have an ally to help them do it without unnecessary stressors.

My motto is, “Treat others the way you would want your mother treated. We will all be there one day.”

And in fact, Oliver did learn a lot from having helped her own mother. She learned what to do and what not to do. And she has been learning ever since.

For example, cardboard boxes are not her preferred method of packing. That comes from simple logistics and personal experience. Floor space in a downsize is at a premium and Oliver says the excess cardboard is messy, and often unnecessary. Instead, Oliver prefers reusable plastic totes that can be color coded, protect items better, and don’t have to be broken down and thrown away at the end of the process.

In fact, the plastic tote method actually helped connect her to the second most

important member of the Moving Matters team, Richard Whitaker.

They were introduced through Whitaker’s wife, after Oliver mentioned how difficult it was for a traditional moving company to work slowly through the process of downsizing a senior client.

Whitaker’s approach to helping people move was more in line with Oliver’s in that he allowed flexibility and longer prep times. And when she noticed that he also relied on those functional, reusable plastic totes instead of cardboard boxes, the deal was sealed and she and Whitaker have been working together ever since.

Oliver is the first to admit that moving out of a family home can be traumatic. Her goal is to address the issues head on and focus on the benefits of senior living—the camaraderie, the safety, the freedom from upkeep.

After determining how much or how little Moving Matters needs to be involved, or what tasks can be better delegated to family members, she proceeds by relying on that age-old mantra: Pack it away, give it away, throw it away. She takes photographs

to document the entire process and keeps a picture inventory of which items went where.

If a client wants to donate to a non-profit, or give something to a friend, or a family member, she is careful to itemize and document the transaction. She says this often helps later if clients forget where or to whom an item was dispensed.

If old flags need to go to the American Legion to be properly disposed of, she can handle that as well. She will organize the transfer of the WiFi and electronic systems from computers to televisions. She even had a client with limited range of mobility due to Parkinson’s and before they made the transition to the new apartment, Oliver measured and established that range and then duplicated it.

And she never packs something in a moving tote that doesn’t already have a specific destination. For example, if a cherished painting is stored for the move, Oliver and her clients already know exactly which wall in which room it will be hung.

Oliver is a certified relocation and transition specialist, CRTS, and is licensed,

bonded, and insured. She participates in continuing education and is held to industry standards. But really, her role is more of a trusted friend who is there to provide moral and actual support so that older people don’t become overwhelmed or demoralized by the prospect of downsizing.

When It’s Time for Assisted Living, Pathways Senior Care Advisors Helps Find the Right Facility.

From A to V: Arcadia to Village Manor, Warren County offers options for seniors in their search for Assisted Living. Massey Springs, Morningside, Chandler Park--the list goes on and each facility has features and benefits unique to the site.

Can residents bring their own vehicles? If so, is there covered parking? Is there extra storage? Are pets allowed? Does housing stand independently, or is it designed more like an apartment complex? What are the levels of care? What are the costs?

When selecting a long-term care facility, the questions can seem endless and an Internet search for which has the best reviews, may not be that helpful. Five stars are great, but what exactly are the parameters? Asking friends for advice is another approach, but with health and financial considerations combined, it’s not one-size-fits all.

So, when business associates Mary Cohron and Stacy Carter first began discussing the complications seniors face in choosing care they realized that they should join forces to help. In February, they hosted the ribbon cutting for their new company called Pathways Senior Care Advisors to do just that.

Cohron stresses that the most important word in their name is “advisor.” Pathways is comprised of caring people, but they are not caregivers in the traditional sense. Their role is to stay current on the myriad of options that make up the marketplace and to give seniors guidance on how to find the right facility.

She also wants potential clients to know that Pathways’ services are free to them. Cohron points out that there are already

“hefty costs,” for long-term care and stresses that Pathways does not add another layer to the equation.

When people reach out to them for help, Cohron says it is for one of several reasons. When memory care is required, she will hear from adult children who realize that mom or dad is slipping on some of the day-to-day activities.

Other times, people are proactive and look ahead to realize that assisted living may be beneficial. “The ideal client calls and says, ‘I think we’re ok now, but I want to plan ahead’,” says Cohron.

Worst case scenario in her view is the client who faces an imminent decision on where to go when leaving a hospital setting. “People who call when they’re being dismissed from a hospital are almost in a panic mode,” she says.

When a client comes through their door, no matter how they arrive, the Pathways team conducts a non-medical assessment that includes a financial review. They also partner with the client’s family and ask what they consider to be the best option.

Unlike those national clearinghouse type services, Pathways will meet directly

Be I PATIenT

with the client and their family to do an assessment, says Cohron. Registered Nurse Sue Riggle, BSN has joined the Pathways team and helped create the assessment scale.

The results determine everything from the level a care required, to which amenities are important, and what the payment terms will be. Pathways takes that information and matches their clients with the right facility.

“The problem with a national call center model is that it’s already confusing. You don’t know what you want or where you want to go. Then to further confuse things let’s say you go to the facility and take the tour and at the end of an hour visit, you say. ‘Oh by the way, I have a pet,’ and they don’t take pets.” That becomes a waste of everybody’s time, Cohron points out.

In contrast, “Because we (Pathways) are familiar with every facility in this area, we can pretty much say: ‘Here are two options that would really work well for you’.”

Clients can then either go visit the facility by themselves, or Pathways will go along too, take the tour, and point out the reasons why they recommended it.

With nearly one-third of Americans suffering from sleep disturbances, according

to research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, now is the time to rethink your bedtime routine and consider more natural ways to get a good night’s rest.

However, implementing those changes doesn’t have to mean overhauling the way you live. Consider these simple tips that can help you sleep better and longer:

Set a comfortable temperature. Making changes in different aspects of your life to achieve better sleep is a fine plan, but it may not make much difference if you aren’t comfortable in your own bed. Be sure to maximize comfort for a full night of sleep by finding a temperature that

works for you, but in general, the National Sleep Foundation recommends a bedroom temperature between 60-67 degrees F.

Tweak your diet. Making simple changes to what you eat and drink can be a positive health-conscious decision, including helping you get better sleep. For example, Montmorency tart cherries, which are available year-round, are one of the few natural food sources of melatonin, a sleep-regulating hormone. New research from the American Journal of Therapeutics shows that insomniacs who drank U.S.-grown Montmorency tart cherry juice for two weeks extended sleep time by 84 minutes. Consuming two 8-ounce glasses of Montmorency tart cherry juice as part of your daily diet, once in the morning

and once at night, can help enhance your sleep time and efficiency. It can also be added to your favorite morning smoothie or a soothing night-time beverage, such as this Tart Cherry Moon Milk. For additional information and recipes, visit ChooseCherries.com.

Try bedtime yoga. Rather than scrolling on your smartphone or staring at the TV, consider a different routine before heading to bed. Implementing a brief yoga session is one way to clear your mind each night prior to getting quality shut-eye.

While missing out on quality sleep can negatively impact your health, simple changes to your lifestyle and diet can play a role in improving the quality and duration of sleep.

22 Living Fit August 2018

BY dave Kirgan

We continually hear about the dangers of toxins in our food, medicines, and even products we use to clean

our houses. But there are a lot of other toxins that are just as dangerous to our wellness. These poisons don't come with a warning label, because they don't come from a bottle. They are the mental poison coming from stress, self-doubt, negative thinking and feelings of inferiority.

Stress has always been with us and always will be. The important thing is not how we avoid stress, but how we handle it. Regular moderately strenuous exercise has long been heralded as a way to work off the bad stress because exercise replaces the anxiety with a good feeling of accomplishment.

This is important because negative mental issues of self-doubt or feelings of not being good enough will often accompany chronically high stress levels.

A person simply cannot exercise with a head full of negative thoughts. Those who have been putting in their miles for a while will completely understand. Walking

or running is one of the most natural activities we can do, but the body can't get the job done if the head is too tied up with worry to even cooperate. So do a little self-bargaining. Forget about that troubling issue. For the next hour, self agree to put it aside until the workout is over. Often-times, the concern will not seem as overwhelming after an hour in motion.

Talking out a concern with a training partner while moving and physically working off the stress is also very therapeutic. But even when walking or running alone the calming effect of the motion is therapeutic. The good feelings we get from the exercise do wonders in terms of boosting our self worth.

According to Web MD, there is some good science behind this: Improved self-esteem is a key psychological benefit of regular physical activity. When we exercise, our bodies release chemicals called endorphins. These endorphins interact with the receptors in our brain to reduce our perception of pain. Like our own personal narcotic, endorphins trigger a positive feeling in the body, similar to that

of morphine. For example, the feeling that follows a run or workout is often described as "euphoric.” A positive and energizing outlook can accompany the feeling.

Yes, regular motion exercise can accomplish more than just making our waist slimmer and muscles stronger. We can actually flush out those mental poisons and break their hold on us. Exercise can literally be life changing, perhaps even more to the point, life enhancing.

It's not just a step, it's a start.

Skills required in today’s quickly changing medical marketplace may not be so quick to change after all .

The Medical marketplace is being reinvented and with it the job opportunities. Advancements in technology require a highly skilled workforce.

But some old-fashioned soft skills can be just as critical to a successful medical career as the letters after your name.

Number one on the list—from the scrub nurse to the surgeon— anybody who works with patients has to have empathy . Patients face difficult situations, so medical professionals have to be willing to get down on their level and see it through their eyes.

Communication skills are essential . Communication can be both specific and subtle—from charting properly to giving families privacy when it’s needed.

Flexibility is also paramount. The medical environment often requires staying late or picking up shifts. Medical emergencies don’t come on a time clock or take holidays off.

And while nobody knows everything, a caregiver has to take ownership of his or her own actions. Self-confidence is one soft skill that must be mastered because in critical situations, people need reassurance. You have to put yourself in charge.
