“If parents want their children to respect them,
they must practice what they preach, be just, be
consistent, and really love them. Empty words
of affection will not be accepted by the children.”
-Mae Carden
HELP OUR COMMUNITY FIGHT HUNGER Parent Club is sponsoring our annual food drive in conjunction with the
Community Food Bank. The Community Food Bank provides food each
year across Fresno, Madera, Kern, and Kings Counties. Did you know one
out of every four people in our community is struggling to put healthy food on
the table? Did you also know that the clients served are typically children and
seniors, or hard-working adults who simply cannot make ends meet and are
forced to go without food for several meals-sometimes for days? You can make
a difference by donating food items and/or through a monetary donation.
Parent Club will match any monetary donation. Items should be brought to the
office or you child’s classroom beginning January 5, 2016 through January 22,
2016. Please make checks payable to Carden Parent Club. Parent Club will
issue one check to Community Food Bank for the total amount donated.
Thank you for your donations!
CARDEN CARES The new Carden Ad Campaign is set to launch on January 29, 2016 from 2:30 – 6:30 pm. The campaign is to promote a greater
awareness of the school through advertising and the launch of a new web site. This campaign will lead to an increase in public
awareness and evaluations of new students applying to the school. Please see the attachment in today’s Lion for more information.

PEACH BLOSSOM AUDITIONS
Students in grades one through six are encouraged to try out for the Peach Blossom Festival to be held at Fresno State on March
10. Students may perform individually, in duets, in trios, or in groups, but they may not enter in more than one category. Evaluating
factors are as follows:
The poem should be age appropriate in length and difficulty.
The poem should be appropriate in content by promoting positive character traits.
The poem should be new and not part of the Carden curriculum at any grade level.
Presentation skills: eye contact, volume, enunciation, pronunciation, expression, pace
The poem should be memorized at the time of auditions.
Bring three copies of the poem to the audition—the teachers will keep two and you will keep one.
State your name, the name of your poem, and the author before you begin reciting your poem.
Mrs. Patel and Mrs. Rohlfing will hold auditions in Mrs. Rohlfing’s classroom on these days:
January 20—1:45 Grades 4 & 5
January 20—2:00 Grade 1
January 21—1:45 Grades 3 & 6
January 21—2:00 Grade 2
We look forward to hearing your poetry!

PARENT VOLUNTEERING AND REMINDER There is an array of volunteer opportunities from which to choose. Visit http://tiny.cc/cardenvolunteer to sign up for Parent Club
volunteer opportunities. All hours must be signed off by the Chairperson and/or Supervisor within 30 days of an event or activity.
CARDEN ENCOURAGES INDEPENDENCE Now that we are entering the second semester of school, it is time for our students to experience more independence in going to their
classroom each morning. Therefore, students in kindergarten and above will be expected to enter their classroom unaccompanied by
adults, put their lunch boxes away on their own, unstack their chair, and be seated, ready to start the day. Your cooperation in
fostering independence in our students is greatly appreciated.
PARKING LOT SAFETY AND ETIQUETTE All parents should be reminded of the importance of safety in our parking lots at arrival and dismissal times. Should it be necessary
for nannies, grandparents, or others to pick up you children, they should also be asked to fellow the procedures set out by the
Student-Parent Handbook so that drop-off and pick-up times run smoothly and safely. Hazards and mishaps can be avoided by
remembering the following:
Absolutely no parking at any time in the immediate area of the Jr. Kindergarten and Kindergarten building.
At drop-off, parents of students in grades K through 8 should pull in facing the quad, in order for children to safely exit cars
and walk to the sidewalk. Cars should not be parked such that other drivers are blocked from exiting.
At pick-up, parents of students in grades K through 5 should enter the north driveway and form two parallel lanes. Drivers
are expected to continue to pull forward until passengers are retrieved. Drivers are not to leave their vehicles.
Parents of students in middle school who are not picking up another sibling should pull into the 2nd driveway and park in front
of middle school building, adjacent to the playground.
Be aware of small children at all times. Never race through our parking lot.
We have precious cargo in our driving lanes-please handle with care.
These guidelines are extra imperative on rainy days!!

LOST / FOUND UNIFORMS AND DONATIONS Just a friendly reminder to please put your child(ren) name somewhere on their uniform- jackets, sweaters, sweatshirts and polos.
Often times we get items turned into the office and are unable to give back to their rightful owners. Also, we appreciate the donation
of gently used uniforms, our families benefit when we can sell them to other students for $1.00 and Student Council uses the money
to fund projects for the betterment of the school. Please note. We can only accept uniforms that are purchased from Dennis
Uniform.

3RD GRADE SCIENCE EXPERIMENT Mrs. Cuevas's students have been learning about chemical changes in science. This takes place when one kind of matter
changes into a different kind of matter. For example, baking bread in the oven causes the batter to turn into bread. For their
experiment, students had to consider the following question: How does changing the shape of an antacid tablet affect how fast it
breaks down in water?
-First, students had to formulate their hypothesis. They were given the following question to help them: If you break apart or crush an
antacid tablet, will it break down in water faster than, slower than, or at the same rate as a whole tablet?
-In separate cups of water, students timed the dissolving of a whole Alka-Seltzer tablet, then a tablet broken into four pieces, and
lastly, a tablet which had been crushed.
-They discovered that it dissolved quickest when it was crushed, which is what many of them had originally hypothesized.
-For some students, the best part of this experiment was getting to wear safety goggles.

As part of the physical education curriculum, all middle school students are required to wear a Carden P.E. uniform. During the winter months, students may wear a Carden hooded sweatshirt and sweat pants. Non-compliance with the uniform policy will negatively affect a student’s grade in the class.
