THE CANADIAN MARITIMES
May 17-28, 2020
Dear Alumni, Parents, Families, and Friends,
We invite you to join us on an exclusive 12-day small group tour to experience the outstanding scenery and abundant history of the Canadian Maritime provinces of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island. University of Chicago trip scholar Stephen Pruett-Jones will enrich our tour with lectures and commentary.
The exploration begins with a scenic day along Novia Scotia’s scenic South Shore and iconic Peggy’s Point Lighthouse. Encounter the region’s colonial history at Lunenburg, a UNESCO site, and at the Grand-Pré National Historic Site in the picturesque Annapolis Valley. In the Bay of Fundy, take a whale-watching cruise, and enjoy dinner aboard a lobster boat in Shediac. While staying in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, tour the island, including the Anne of Green Gables Museum. On beautiful Cape Breton Island, visit the Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site, drive the world-famous Cabot Trail, and see the 18th-century Fortress of Louisbourg. After returning to Halifax, celebrate the Maritimes adventure with a farewell dinner.
Space on this exclusive program is limited to 24 UChicago alumni, family, and friends, and will fill quickly. Your early reservations are encouraged.
Best wishes,
Sarah Eichhorn Assistant Director, Alumni Travel Program The University of Chicago

Day 1: Arrive Halifax, Nova Scotia We arrive today in Halifax, capital of the Canadian province of Nova Scotia and a bustling center of commerce and shipping. As guests’ arrival times may vary greatly, we have no group activities or meals planned for today.
Day 2: Halifax/Lunenburg/South Shore This morning we begin our exploration of Canada’s mari-time provinces with a scenic and comprehensive day along Nova Scotia’s South Shore. Once the domain of privateering pirates, the region is now home to countless photogenic fishing villages. We set out early for Peggy’s Cove, a tiny hamlet strung along the eastern shore of St. Margarets Bay. Our destination: Peggy’s Point Lighthouse, one of Canada’s most pho-tographed landmarks and where we enjoy breakfast overlooking the red-and-white beacon perched on a granite outcropping. Then we continue on the coastal road to Lunenburg, a UNESCO site. Settled by the British in 1753, this historic town represents Canada’s finest surviving example of a planned British town. We take a walking tour of this colorful hamlet then have time for lunch on our own. Our touring continues this afternoon as we make a photo stop in Mahone Bay, known for its three centuries-old churches. Late this afternoon, we return to Halifax for tonight’s welcome dinner. B,D
Day 3: Halifax/Saint John, New Brunswick Today we travel to the scenic Annapolis Valley, a network of farms, fields, and forests lying between two mountain ranges in Nova Scotia’s northwest. We stop for a tour at Tangled Garden, where we learn how the workers use the fresh fruit and aromatic herbs cultivated here to create a wide range of preserves, jellies, mustards, and liqueurs. After sampling a few of the garden’s wares, we visit nearby Grand-Pré National Historic Site, dedicated to the memory of the area’s original French Acadian settlers. Then we travel to the coastal village of Digby, the “Scallop Capital of the World,” where one of the options for lunch will include this Maritime delicacy. Late this afternoon we board a ferry and cross the Bay of Fundy to Saint John, where dinner tonight is on our own. B,L
Day 4: Saint John/St. Andrews This morning we embark on a panoramic tour of Saint John, the first

fortifications and colonial British settlements, and travel to secluded Prince Edward Island and rugged Cape Breton on this classic route.

incorporated city in present-day Canada. We gain an appreciation for the city’s history as we drive along King Street, the steepest main street in Canada; and pass by landmarks including the Loyalist House, one of Saint John’s first homes; hilltop Carleton Martello Tower, the fortification that ranks as Saint John’s oldest building; and the Old City Market, Canada’s longest-running farmer’s market. Then we make our way down the coast to St. Andrews-by-the-Sea. From here, we embark on a whale watching cruise in the Bay of Fundy, where we’re on the lookout for the bay’s 12 species of whales (including humpback, minke, and finback). B,D
Day 5: Saint John/Shediac We travel today to the head of the Bay of Fundy to tour Hopewell Rocks, famous for having the world’s highest tides. Formed over the millennia as the seaside sandstone cliffs were slowly worn away by a combination of wind, surface water, and tide, these “Flowerpot Rocks” range from 40 to 70 feet tall. We spend time here to view the formation, then continue on to Shediac, the “Lobster Capital of the World.” Here we enjoy an authentic lobster dinner on board a working lobster boat and learn about this industry that plays a vital role in the region’s economy. B,L,D
Day 6: Shediac/Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island This morning we cross the 8-mile-long Confederation Bridge connecting mainland Canada to Prince Edward Island (PEI). Many PEI residents trace their lineage back to the area’s first French and English settlers, and we learn about this rich historical tradition at our first stop on the island: Village Musical Acadien, which hosts cultural events, concerts, and community theater. We continue on to Charlottetown, PEI’s capital and our home for the next two nights. Known as the “Birthplace of

Confederation,” Charlottetown hosted the Char-lottetown Conference of 1864, which paved the way for Canada’s eventual independence from Britain. We tour this historic locale, passing the Greek- and Roman-influenced Province House, seat of the PEI Legislature since 1847; and the Confederation Cen-tre of the Arts, a National Historic Site and home to Canada’s longest-running mainstage musical, Anne of Green Gables. B,L
Day 7: Prince Edward Island After a morning at leisure in Charlottetown, early this afternoon we travel to the island’s scenic North Shore, where we admire the red cliffs, white-sand beaches, gently sloping dunes, and green fields of Prince Edward Island National Park. Along our drive we stop to tour the Anne of Green Gables Museum at Silver-bush, where we take a brief carriage ride around the museum’s property to view the Lake of Shining Waters, and pay a visit to the Campbell home and gardens. Then we enjoy afternoon tea at historic Dalvay-by-the-Sea, the opulent and beautiful Queen Anne Revival-style hotel. B,D
Day 8: Charlottetown/Iona, Cape Breton Island This morning we board a ferry for the return trip to the mainland then travel to Cape Breton Island, one of Canada’s most beautiful spots. Our first stop here: Baddeck, set on the shores of Bras d’Or Lake, where we tour the Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site, a museum complex featuring the actual models and documents Bell created while experi-menting at his home nearby. Then we continue on to our hotel in Iona. B,D
Day 9: Iona/Cabot Trail It’s a day of outstanding scenery as we drive the world-famous Cabot Trail. Named for Venetian explorer Giovanni Caboto
(John Cabot) who landed in Atlantic Canada in 1497, this 185-mile route loops around the northern tip of Cape Breton Island, passing through the rugged and beautiful Cape Breton Highlands National Park. Here, steep cliffs repel the crashing surf, river can-yons carve out routes to the sea, and mountainsides covered in deep green pines provide stunning photo opportunities. As we pass through this magnificent landscape, we make ample stops to absorb the gran-deur of our surroundings. B,L,D
Day 10: Iona/Louisbourg/Sydney Today we visit the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site, the reconstructed fortress that is now a living history museum. Next we visit nearby Sydney, Cape Breton’s largest town, where we have free time to explore as we wish followed by dinner at at local restaurant before we return to Iona. B,D
Day 11: Iona/Halifax, Nova Scotia On the way back to Halifax today, we stop for lunch at the Masstown Market near Truro, a produce and fish market
