“Church Conference Affirms Facilities Master Plan”
On Sunday, May 21st, by a vote of 109 in favor, 13 opposed and 1 abstention, our
Called Church Conference affirmed the “Vision 2020 Facilities Master Plan” pre-
sented by our Building Study Committee and the architects of Sherman Carter Barn-
hart. This vote of affirmation came after 15 months of prayer, sweat and tears of our
Building Study Committee chaired by Gaines Penn and Shannon Vitale. I know you
join me in thanking them and their whole committee for their amazingly faithful
service to State Street.
I wanted you to know what the next steps will be now that the overall master plan has
been approved. First, this summer, (mid-June to mid-July) Rev. Craig Miller with Ho-
rizons Stewardship, will conduct a Giving Feasibility Study to assist us in estimating
how much interest and potential financial resources there are to implement the
facilities master plan. All of us will be given an opportunity to participate and give
feedback during this feasibility study—be watching for future instructions!
Second, this fall, Rev. Miller will lead us in conducting a capital campaign to see how
much money we can raise towards implementing the master plan. The entire master
plan is estimated at $7.2M and until we conduct a capital campaign, we will not know
how best to proceed with the plan. I appreciate the spirit of our Building Study
Committee that did not want to “sell ourselves short,” as one member put it, and only
propose a piece of the master plan in our May 21st church conference. They wanted to
present the total vision, the total dream that could launch us, by God’s grace, into the
next 200 years of ministry at State Street. As we get closer to the fall, all of us will
once again have opportunities to participate and assist in making our capital campaign
as successful as it could possibly be—be watching for future instructions!
Third and finally, following the capital campaign, an official Building Committee will
be established to bring to a future Called Church Conference their recommendation on
how best to move forward with the master plan. This Building Committee would then
be empowered by the results of the church conference to guide the specific and
approved implementation of the master plan.
Please know that our Sherman Carter Barnhart architect’s renderings of the master
plan are located for your review in the gathering area outside the church office. I hope
you will look at them, say a prayer, ask questions, say a prayer, think of ways to
improve the master plan, say a prayer, decide on how you can help bring to fruition
the master plan, say another prayer.
For over 30 years now, I have been through renovations and building projects in every
church in which I have been fortunate enough to be appointed and serve—thanks be to
God! The goal is always the same—how can we best use our facility resources to
reach and bless more people in our community and world in the name of Christ? How
can the buildings we have been blessed with by God’s grace help us implement the
mission that God has entrusted to us? I am, as they say, “all in” with this master plan.
I hope you will be also to the glory of God!
Much grace and peace,
Dr. Jay

State Street UMC,
I want to personally thank you, once
again, for allowing Jami to partner with
us in such an amazing way. She has been
such a huge help as I have gotten off the
ground here at WKU. I honestly do not
think this first year could have been so
successful without her help. I pray that
God blesses your all’s ministry just as I
know that you are praying for the
Wesley.
God is doing great things here, thank you
so much for being a vital part of
extending God’s grace to our campus.
Grace & Peace,
Pastor Michael
