A GREAT COMMISSION

MATTHEW 28:1–7

INTRODUCTION: A few verses later in this chapter we find Matthew’s account of “The Great Commission,” as we usually refer to it. In this text, we read of another “Great Commission.”

These conscientious women have come early in the morning on the first day of the week following the crucifixion of Jesus to add a woman’s touch to the body of Jesus, to lovingly prepare it for a proper burial (Mark 16:1; Luke 24:1). How surprised they were when they arrived at the tomb, and saw the stone moved, the angels sitting on it, and the tomb itself empty! Furthermore, they are given an exhortation followed by a series of commands by the angels, which comprise a commission they must accomplish.

I. ______________

A. This is the exhortation, and functions as an imperative.

B. If the women had not followed this instruction, the ________________ could not have even begun!

C. Until and unless one comes to Jesus, nothing else can happen _______________!

D. The invitation to “come” is repeated in many places in the Bible:

1. Isaiah 1:18—“Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.

2. Matthew 11:28—Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

3. Matthew 22:4—Again he sent other servants, saying, ‘Tell those who are invited, “See, I have prepared my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves have been slaughtered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding feast.” ’

4. Matthew 25:34—Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, in herit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.

5. John 4:28, 29—So the woman left her water jar and went away into town and said to the people, 29

“Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?”

E. See 2 Timothy 3:16, 17—All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correc-

tion, and for training in righteousness, 17

that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

II. _____________

A. The women are instructed to look carefully at the _______, where Jesus had lain.

B. It is necessary for us as well to be ____________ to see what the Lord is teaching us to do and say!

C. We must not “_____________,” thinking to see something God has not shown (James 1:22–25—But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.

23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is

like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. 24

For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like.

25 But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no

hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing).

D. There are many _____________ that do not originate with God, and we must be aware of what is true and genu- ine versus what is false and counterfeit!

III. GO _________________

A. The women are the first ____________ to the resurrection of Jesus from the dead.

B. Some have wondered why this is the case, but the reason is because they were the first to go to the tomb!

C. The disciples were _____________ and afraid (John 20:19), and did not yet understand what Jesus had meant by telling them of His resurrection.

D. There was an urgency to their going to the disciples to report what they had seen and been told!

E. There is an _______________ for us to “go quickly” as well!

F. In 2014, an average of 5 people died per minute in the United States!

G. The majority of these people die without an accurate ______________ of God’s way of salvation!

SHEPHERD’S CORNER….Dennis Tindall

The Tool of Consistency If you search your concordance you will not find the word “consistent” in the Bible. But there is a Greek word (proskartareo) that is defined as: To persist in adherence to a thing; to be intently engaged in, to attend to constantly. It is translated “attending constantly” in Romans 13:6 with reference to the job governing authorities must do. It is translated “continuing steadfastly” with reference to prayer in Acts 1:14 and Romans 12:12 It is translated “to wait on continually” in Acts 10:7 with reference to servants serving their masters

I would propose that if you persist in attending to constantly, intently being engaged you must be consistent. I would further propose that consistency is a valuable tool in the tool box of remaining faithful and helping to insure your children remain faithful.

What does consistency look like? Here are a few examples: Never missing a Bible class opportunity Never missing worship services Reading the Bible with your family every day Spending time helping your child learn a memory verse every week.

How can being consistent help with remaining faithful you may be asking? To answer that question let’s look at what failing to be consistent looks like and where it leads:

Attending worship service except for those occasions where a sporting event is in play (Where it leads: to a pattern of increasing reasons not to attend worship.) Attending Bible class except for when the family stayed up late the night before (Where it leads: to children who understand Bible class isn’t really that important.) Reading the Bible with your family when time allows (Where it leads: to teenagers who will never have time to read the Bible.) Letting your child skip the memory verse if they want to. (Where it leads: to a generation who doesn’t know enough Bible verses to defend their faith.)

The examples could go on and on, but I think you see the principal. Consistency in doing everything the Lord asks us to do, not only will help keep us doing what the Lord desires always, it will establish such for our children and they will see that truly we are seeking first the kingdom of God! Seeing our consistency they will desire to do the same!

Let me encourage us to begin our consistency now, because before long our children won’t have time for our con-sistency and Satan is gladly waiting to help us with excuses not to be consistent.

IV. _________

A. Be ___________!

B. Psalm 9:11—Sing praises to the Lord, who sits enthroned in Zion! Tell among the peoples his deeds!

C. Psalm 22:22—I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will praise you …

D. Psalm 26:6–7—I wash my hands in innocence and go around your altar, O Lord, 7 proclaiming thanksgiving

aloud, and telling all your wondrous deeds.

E. Psalm 40:5—You have multiplied, O Lord my God, your wondrous deeds and your thoughts toward us; none can compare with you! I will proclaim and tell of them, yet they are more than can be told.

F. Mark 5:19—And he did not permit him but said to him, “Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.”

G. Acts 4:19–20—But Peter and John answered them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you ra-

ther than to God, you must judge, 20

for we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard.”

CONCLUSION: While this may not be “the” Great Commission, it is certainly a Great Commission. And the women fulfilled their commission!
