Red Ribbon Week
By Abagail Deuerling
Red Ribbon Week began to honor the memory of
Agent Enrique Camarena and his polit Alfredo Zavala-
Avelar who were kidnapped in 1985. Agent Camarena
worked in Chihuahua, Mexico, for four years to bust the
drug cartels. The drug cartels sought revenge by
kidnapping Agent Camarena on February 7, 1985 and
later that day his polit Alfredo was also kidnapped. The
Mexican Federal Judicial Police later found Camarena
and Alfredo dead down the road from the ranch. Red
Ribbon Week raises awareness of tobacco, violence,
alcohol, and other drugs across the country.
Here at SJHS, students may participate in Red Ribbon
Week by dressing for the day’s theme. Students who
participate have a chance to win a prize such as water
bottles, ear buds, back packs, and miniature balls.
Advisory schedule will run all week so that we can
watch videos that show real people who have
addictions. On Friday, we will have the basketball
shootout finals and a pep-rally. ∞

Robotics is the mechanical engineering of S.T.E.M.
(Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).
To become a member you must write a three-point
essay that relates to the theme, describe the skills you
have, and how you could contribute to the team.
This year the theme is Animal Allies. The theme
requires us to identify an animal we can ally with and
help overcome a problem. We chose to research a
woodpecker, who is native to southern Arkansas and
whose species is on the verge of becoming
endangered.
Students are chosen to participate based on their
interest in S.T.E.M. As a team we build and program
an autonomous robot from Legos. The first competition
is usually in November or December and it’s in Searcy.
The state competition is in January, if you qualify. ∞
Choir
By Kaylee Harris The choir performed at Timberfest on October 7.
On October 15 choir members will be traveling to
White Hall High School to participate in All Region
tryouts.
If you ordered something from the Cherrydale
fundraiser, the items should be here around the end of
November or first of December ∞
Band
By Brody Tubbs
Band Night was a great success this year. Band Night,
which was held on September 27th, was at the
Sheridan High School football field. The band did a
nice job showing off their musical skills and the crowd
enjoyed listening to the music.
If you didn’t get a chance to go to Band Night, don’t
worry! The Junior High band will still be playing at all of
the home football games this year at the Sheridan
High School football field. ∞

Halloween is a time for celebration, superstition and
imagination. Back when Halloween first began, some
people believed that on October 31, the dead would
rise as ghosts. The people would put out food and
wine to keep the spirits away. They also began
dressing in costumes so that they would be mistaken
for ghosts. During the 8th century, the Christian
churches named the day Saint Hallows day, the night
before that became Saint Hallows Eve. Today, it is
estimated that Americans spend a total of 6 billion
dollars each year, making Halloween the second most
commercial holiday after Christmas. ∞
