PRESIDENT’S REPORTGreetings to all.

By the looks of social media and a few messages I have received, our club members have done well with some good heads coming in over the roar season – this years AHT should be a good one!

Also don’t forget about our photo competition, there are a heap of categories including a new one for Game Camera Photo’s – the National Competition has this so we thought it should be incorporated at a Branch level also! Registration forms and details for the AHT and Photography competitions are in this BT, so get those entries rolling in.

I managed to get down to the Central North Island chasing Red’s for a few days in the beginning of April – there was a bit of noise going on and a bit of excitement, taking a couple of smaller stags for meat but the big boys eluded us this year. Following on from that, it was onto a Fly In trip to the Kaweka Forest Park with East Kaweka Helicopters where we fly camped for 8 days covering a few KMs and some steep ground with 50KG packs – thankfully they were a lot lighter at the end due to the Whiskey evaporating! Again a couple of smaller stags taken for meat and a bit of excitement was had while the big boys lived to survive another day.

Hope to see you at the next club night.

Happy & safe hunting.

Callum Sheridan, Auckland Branch President.

GARY CHAPMANIt’s always a great day to go hunting. Recently I was

offered the opportunity to hunt in the Southern Alps with a good group of guys.

The only thing about hunting in the Southern Alps is the logistics of transporting a vast amount of equipment and also the factor of bringing home the meat and deer antlers. It started with a two-day drive down to the Southern Alps and drive in up into the hills on the off road track to a cabin we were going to stay. What a great day to go hunting the weather was beautiful, cold crisp mornings & long sunny days.

The first day for me was to cover ground, I wanted to familiarise myself with the area and to get an idea of where the deer were hanging out, I left the hut early in the morning and made tracks down the valley following the main waterway towards one of the large mountains. On my way I spotted various hinds feeding and a few stags of a smaller size, there was a lot of roaring coming from the valleys and the bush covered areas. I made my way up a large valley and spent the next hour climbing to 865 m above sea level, at this time I decided to go to higher altitude to get an advantage of being above the animals, from there I was able to glass around a vast area working my way along the tops of able to see a lot of animals. A lot of small stags, some stags around 10 points & some at eight points but I was still looking for the best one, slowly I marked the information on my map to identify where these animals were and in which valley, late

that afternoon I dropped in to the headwaters of one valley where I could hear a lot of roaring, I set myself up on a high point and sat down for the next hour glassing around, there were a lot of hinds in the valley’s I knew there would be a stag somewhere - and there he was, a beautiful 12 point and then he was gone, he got wind of me headed into the thick scrub.

With what I could see this seem to be the most prominent stag in the area I was in but he was smart. I knew I was going to have to have my wits about me trying to get a shot at him, it was getting late and I headedback to the camp.

Day two: I headed out to find my stags, I decided to take a different path and work my way around the mountain and come up the other side, unfortunately not a good day as the wind was spiralling around the headwaters of the valley, so I made my way off in a different direction and decided to have a look around another spot. I had some fun this day, I roared up 4 stags one good 10 point and took a lot of good photos. At one stage I had stags within 10m of me!. As the day wore on I decided to head back to camp - still with no stag.

Day three: I decided this is the day, so armed with my 7mm Magnum I’d made tracks to a high spot above the valley as I approached and positioned myself, I glassed the area, there he was! prominently walking through some small tea tree, not a good position to take a shot but I worked my way slightly down the valley to a point where

I thought I would be able to get a good shot, then damn there were hinds everywhere! one of the lead hinds started barking, she picked up my scent. I took position on a high point overlooking the valley and just sat there, the stag had retreated into the thickness of the bush. 45 minutes later I could see a spiker moving around the tea tree, then the spiker went into the bush as well, within two minutes the spiker came running out very fast, it looked like somebody kicked him up the bum and I was right, out came the good stag, he stood on a little outcrop on the other side of the valley and let out a few very vocal roars, I quickly set my rangefinder on him 332m. Within a minute I was set up ready to go and I took the shot, it was a great feeling watching the stag collapse, but then I realised he’d rolled down the hill and had fallen off a bluff, Bugger I hope his antlers are okay! I waited 10 to 15 minutes just glassing the area making sure that he wasn’t going to pop up again, then it was an agonising 40 minute walk through the bush and scrub to get to where he’d fallen off the small bluff down through the tea tree and ferns, wedged into a small stream but the main thing is that is antlers were fully intact.

I had to dress him out in the stream as he was too heavy to move but it was a nice walk out of that valley and back up the hill with a good amount to meat and a nice set of 12 point antlers! It was a long day, this day it took me 4 ½ hours to get back to the camp. But what a great hunt, I had my stag plus hundreds of awesome photos. I was also able to pass on some various knowledge to some of the other members and see the satisfaction of them getting a deer as well.

MIKE MORSEThe first camp planned had to

be postponed due to a predicted rough spell of weather, which never really eventuated. It was a couple of weeks before a second camp could be organised and unfortunately this meant a number of those who had planned to participate were unable to reschedule and we ended up with only a small group of boys. Saturday morning our little group met up at the entry to Palliser Down, a big block of rough farmland, gorse and bush at Wainui. Due to overnight rain part of the track was fairly slippery but luckily only one vehicle had to be towed up to the intended campsite. The boys all bundled out and, with the help of their elders, soon had a pretty tidy camp set up.

With this chore out of the way some possum and rabbit targets were erected, and under watchful eyes, the boys were soon putting holes in the appropriate places. Following this we wandered off into a nearby patch of bush where the boys were given the scenario that “it was getting dark, raining and they had to build themselves a shelter as they wouldn’t be getting back to camp that night”. Finding a log supported at right angles by a couple of trees they were soon gathering nikau fronds and ferns and in half an hour erected a pretty comfy looking bivvy which they could have stuck the night out in if necessary. With that complete Mike showed them a few bits of bush tucker which could be used if short on food, the base of the nikau shoots being the most preferred. Ian

Back to camp and time to eat some real food, followed by marshmallows cooked over an open fire the boys had got going. The recent rain had its benefits, as up to the day before everything was tinder dry and fires would have been out of the question. Dark soon descended and, being away from light pollution of Auckland, a spectacular display of stars slowly appeared. Splitting into two groups, each headed off in different directions with a spotlight and 22 in search of the furry “tree bears” that abound in the area. Our little group had great fun nailing half a dozen, most of which were in the kahikateas feeding on the berries. The others also had success and a couple of hours later, after regrouping back at camp, some tired young fellas (and dads) crawled into their tents. There wasn’t much talking, just some heavy snoring from un-named tents.

The morning looked bright and a breakfast of bacon, eggs, etc was soon sizzling on the bbq. Nothing serious was planned for the day but Ian had brought his side by side and this turned out to be very popular with the boys who were soon showing off their driving skills up some of the farm tracks. One of the possums was consigned to the creek as eel bait but unfortunately, due to the long dry spell,

there was little water and no eels. A couple of koura turned up and, as payback for drawing blood on Sheldon’s finger with their claws, were soon in a pot of boiling water. More good bush tucker and a new experience. A bit more target shooting was had before it was time to fold up camp and head for civilisation, computer games and a soft bed. Even though things had dried up during the day Bryce still had to hitch a strop onto one of the vehicles to get it back out, just adding to the adventure.

Thanks to Guy Matches, Ian Broxton, Bryce Rackley and Nick Mathew who turned up and pitched in to make it a pretty relaxing and laid back little camp. Levi, Reive, Sheldon and little Tom all got on well and seemed to enjoy themselves, hopefully learning a few things in the process.

If you are interested, get a copy of “How to SURVIVE in the bush – on the coast – in the mountains of NZ”. It is an old publication, pretty basic, but the principles haven’t changed. There are plenty of other interesting publications such as Outdoor Skills (Mountain Safety Council), Native Edible Plants and Medicines of the Maori which all have useful info.

DARREN HINDLE I was invited to go hunt on a private

south island block in the Gore region and the offer was extended to 3 of my mates and Gus (The dog), so I started making some plans to make this happen. As I have never planned a hunt like this I get the help from a mate who has done some planning for these kind of hunts, although not of this scale

The basic plan was to drive down with a trailer and drive back with all the meat, easy in principle but not in practice as the logistics were a nightmare.

After all the plans were make se set sail at 4am on the 31/03/2019 to head for the ferry crossing in wellington, I have seen a lot of the north island but never been to the south island so this was going to be an interesting experience for me.

We all shared the driving which was great, we overnighted in Woodend at the Pegasus Gateway Motels, we got in after 9pm, had a quick drink and shower and then to bed as we were up again at 6am.After a few hours of driving we arrived at the station, thanks god, by this stage we are have had enough of sitting in a car and wanted to stretch our legs.

We then repacked the car so we could get all the gear food and everything else up

to the cabin. One we got to the cabin it was epic as we had deer roaring all round us, we saw over 50 deer just on the drive in so we were all very excite.

The first few day we all wend in different directions trying to see where the best place

was to go to shoot our stages, some mistakes were made and some were a success. We had people for fill their life dreams of seeing deer fight, deer roaring end much more.

We were allowed to take a stag each and 2 hinds as we were after all the meat to bring home, they also through in

as many fellow deer as we can shoot, we had to bear in mind about how much meat we could bring home as we had limited space in the end we shot 4 Stage 8 hinds and 4 fellow deer.

My first few days wire very disappointing as I shot at a few deer but missed and was getting a lot of advice for everybody, Ian lent me his other rifle as we discovered that my rifle must have been bumped and was out, armed with Ian’s 7mm08 we took off and a few hours later a shot my first red deer, I was stoked.

Next on my list was my stag, and the next day I went up to secret spot X and about an hour

Page 21: THE BUSH TELEGRAPH BT...Callum Sheridan, Auckland Branch President. NZDA AUCKLAND BRANCH (EST.1951) MONTHLY MAGAZINE MAY 2019 COVER PHOTO Faiz Salim and his 15 pt fallow stag which

later I was stoked again as I had done what I set out to do, I shot my 11 pointer. I was over the moon happy, then we had to carry the meat out, man that was heavy.

We decided to head back a day earlier as we basically had our quota and the chilly bins and trailer was now full so we headed down to the single men’s quarters to spend the next two day deboning all the meat and vacuum packing all the meat.

We got up early on the last day and headed out back to Kaikoura to spend the night there and then head off early the next morning to make the ferry back to wellington. We got home at about 11:30 pm after a very long day of driving.

Overall it was a trip of a lifetime and hopefully the owner of the property will invite us back to do it all again,

Thanks You to Ian, Garry & JJ for making this a bucket list item I can now tick off.

The heart on the left was from a hind the right is from my Stag.

RANGE REPORTAUCK. SPORTING RIFLE CLUB’S INTERCLUB COMPETITIONWe are participating again in this years forth coming interclub event with the other Auckland sporting rifle clubs having done quite well in the last couple of years.. The rifles used in this competition are the .22 rimfire rifle, bolt action or semi automatic, scoped, in a sporting type configuration up to a maximum weight of 4.5kg. including the scope. This is also a no gear shoot ie. no slings, gloves, butt hooks, shooting jackets to be used. Some of the events will be shot during the week & others on the weekend. The branch needs a team of five shooters for this competition plus the position as the club captain for this event. We are always on the lookout for new faces for the team.

Please contact me if you are interested in being part of the team, on 8461 946. (evenings)

To make all things equal for those who shoot either our own aggregate shoots or the interclub the same criteria for the interclub will apply to our aggregate shoot.

The essence of both competitions is that this is a no gear shoot.

protection for yourself & for any others that you bring to the range site.

At 1.30 pm there will be a black powder rifle shoot for those who want to have a practice.

Those who decide to attend please do not interrupt the pistol shooters on the 25m range.

SILHOUETTE SHOOTINGHere is a brief outline of our sport. The targets are metallic representations of four animals, Chicken, Pig, Turkey and Ram which need to fall over when hit to score 1 point.

The targets are shot at varying distances, for rimfire this is 40m, 60m, 77m and 100m. For centrefire this is 200m, 300, 380m and 500m.

Our centrefire targets are all scaled for 200m since this is the maximum length we have at the range.

All targets are shot standing with no target jackets or slings allowed and 2.5 minutes is allowed to shoot five targets. Shooting is always from left to right and only one shot per target is allowed.

The equipment required is that which you likely will already have. There are specific, weights, dimensions, trigger pulls etc. but we do not require compliance with this for our shoots at Auckland NZDA range.

For centrefire almost any calibre you

will be happy to shoot a full match of 40 rounds is acceptable but please do not use FMJ projectiles, soft point or hollow point is ideal. We have a test plate you should shoot before commencing a match to test for damage.

Any sights are permitted but your experience will be enhanced by the use of a higher power scope of 12x and above with adjustable objective, target turrets are an advantage but not essential.

We encourage you to come along and try the sport, if nothing else practice in standing shooting will enhance your future hunting experiences.

The next silhouette shoot at our range is a centrefire shoot & is on the 25th May..
