THE BULLSTONES. Grid. Ref. SD 675 577. A collection of boulders and small edges on the south slopes of White Hill above Croasdale in Bowland north west of Slaidburn. They lie in a high [450m] remote moorland situation and stretch across the hillside for over a kilometre. The gritstone is of mainly good quality, rough and pebbly, dries quickly and benefits from all available sunshine. A lichen is easily cleared with a soft brush. Access is from the Salter Fell track. [The Hornby Road] From the centre of Slaidburn follow the road past the Hark To Bounty inn [opposite the youth hostel] for 1.5K here turn right onto the narrow Woodhouse Lane. Continue uphill past farms for 2.5K to parking places on the left before the fell gate, park with consideration. The rough road now contours up the south of Croasdale, passing several gates [locked!]. After a walk of 4K the top gate is reached at a height of 416m. [GR 667 574] in about an hour. Less on a mountain bike. From the gate the track goes on down Roeburndale, this could give a long approach from the Lancaster side. For the most westerly boulders, The Cowstones, go through the gate and follow the left side of the fence up the hill for 250m. For the main groups follow a vague track starting 10m short of the gate up the fell parallel with the fence for about 300m until level with a fenceside boulder. Here turn right with the track for a short way to continue contouring to the rocks visible ahead. The boulders are divided into ten sectors for ease of orientation, to help identification these are split into groups of problems – there’s a lot of rock! When the heather or bracken is high be careful amongst the boulders, there are some hidden ankle breaking holes. Grading anything under 4a is given Easy then good old British technical grades are used. Sector I. The Cowstones. These are found west of the fence as described in the approach. Problems are described right to left starting on the lower tier.
