From the principal

Welcome to Term 4 and our new look Bulletin. We are no longer using the Schoolzine app for the Bulletin, we will be sending them out via email or hard copy. Please let us know if you need to update your email address. I hope all families enjoyed the holiday break. It was lovely to see our staff and students return to school last week bursting with energy, ready for another very busy term. When you are passing the office please introduce yourself to our new School Administration Manager (SAM) Cath Robinson. Cath comes to us highly recommended from North Shore Hospital School and we welcome her to our wonderful Darlington community.

Swimming: Our weekly swimming classes have started at Sydney University for Years 1-6. Students should bring their towel, swimmers and goggles if required. Students may wish to wear their swimmers to school under their uniform. They are permitted to wear thongs or sandals to and from the pool on the days of swimming but at school they should change back to their shoes or joggers.

School community: Thank you to Kate O for spending the time to design and format the new Bulletin for our school. We are very fortunate at Darlington to have such a supportive and enthusiastic school community all working together. We highly value our relationships and connections with our parents and the wider community.

Darlington Public School Student Wellbeing and Discipline Policy: This week you will have received a copy of the new Darlington Public School Student Wellbeing and Discipline Policy in your child's school bag. I have also emailed a copy to you. Thank you to the students, parents and staff who participated in the collaboration, development and implementation of this comprehensive policy. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us to discuss further.

Kindergarten 2020 orientation evening: We are about to commence our orientation program for Kindergarten 2020 students and families. Our information evening in on next Wednesday 30 October at 6pm in the school hall. We will be holding transition to school sessions during November for our new kindergarten students. Enrolments for 2020: We are very much looking forward to welcoming all new families to DPS next year. Our school is now taking kindergarten enrolments; please see the office for an enrolment form. Also, if you know that you will be leaving DPS at the end of the year, can you please advise the office.

Social media: We have a new Facebook page to consolidate both of the former school Facebook pages into one. Please join our new page at: fb.me/DarlingtonPS

Regional Athletics Carnival: Congratulations to Mandawuy, Jarvis, Jeanette-Lee, Taiahmi and Lanisha for representing our school and South Sydney PSSA at the Regional Athletics carnival at Olympic Park last week. What fine ambassadors for our school, they represented us with enthusiasm and great sportsmanship. Well done to these students.

World Teachers’ Day: Most countries around the world celebrate World Teachers’ Day on October 5, however, because this date usually falls during the Australian school holidays, we celebrate World Teachers’ Day on the last Friday of October instead. This year, World Teachers’ Day falls on Friday 25 October in Australia. At Darlington, the day provides a great opportunity for everyone to recognise and appreciate our teachers. I would like to thank all of the teaching staff, the SLSO's and the SASS staff at Darlington who work together with such dedication, enthusiasm and passion for our school and most importantly for the role they each play in shaping a bright future for your children. Michelle McCormack Relieving Principal

Leadership Committee

Our Leadership Committee was invited by The Lord Mayor of Sydney, Clover Moore to attend the Planning for Sydney 2050 summit. They participated in a review of the Sustainable Sydney 2030 plan and contributed their ideas to creating a plan for Sydney through to 2050. What a great opportunity to give their thoughts about what Sydney could be like by 2050 and how we should get there. Congratulations to all students for representing our school so well.

Environment Committee

From the students

The Environment Committee is working hard to organise our school participating in Planet Ark’s National Recycling Week from 11-17 November.

These are some of the reasons we think we should recycle:

Littering is bad for animals and the environment

Marine life have to swim and live in polluted waterways

By participating in recycling week from 11-17 November we can make a difference.

From the school

Tell Them From Me This Term, our school is participating in the Partners in Learning parent survey, another part of the Tell Them From Me suite of surveys (student, teacher and parent surveys) on student engagement. The survey asks parents and carers questions about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and engagement.

Running this survey will help our school understand parents’ and carers’ perspectives on their child’s experience at school. These include: communication between parents/carers and staff, activities and practices at home and parent/carer views on the school's support of learning and behaviour. This valuable feedback will help our school make practical improvements.

The survey is conducted entirely online on smartphones, iPads, tablets, laptops or computers. The survey will typically take 15 minutes or less to complete and is completely confidential. The parent survey will be conducted until the 25 October. Although participating in the survey is entirely voluntary, your responses are very much appreciated.

More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au.

From the P&C

We are holding a Halloween Party on October 31: dress up in something spooky; creep through

the Haunted Hallway and dance with your friends at the disco. It’ll be $5 for entry and $1 for a

sausage sizzle.

Mango order forms are due back on October 30, so remember to place your order to ensure

you get some North Queensland sweetness straight from the farm.

We’re also launching fundraising for our Colour Run this week. It’s on November 15 and

promises to be lots of fun (and just a little bit messy).

If you would like to become involved with our P & C please email us at:

[email protected].

Don’t forget to join Darlington Public School P&C Association Facebook group.

CHESS!!

Learn to be a chess champion! Coaching for students at Darlington Public School is held on Mondays from 3:00pm to 4:00pm, starting on 14 October 2019.

Learning and playing chess helps children develop their logical thinking and problem solving

skills, improves their concentration and focus, while also being a great source of enjoyment.

Activities include group lessons on a demonstration chess board or interactive whiteboard,

puzzle solving and fun practice games.

Students earn merit awards by making checkmates, or by displaying skills and positive

qualities, which all good chess players strive to develop.

If your child is interested in taking part, you can collect an enrolment form from the school

office, or email [email protected] for a copy. For all enquiries, please

contact Sydney Academy of Chess on (02) 9745 1170.
