FOUR STAGES OF IMPROVING YOUR TENNIS GAME
Submitted by Fernando M. Velasco Tennisplayers,asmanyotherindividualsports,needtohave“personal”attentioninordertoimprovetheirgames.Inmy35+yearsofcoaching,Ihavebeensuccessfulimproving games of players who havetrusted me with their games, using theFourStageslistedbelow.Stage One: Consistency Our muscles react to repetition ofsomething that feels good and natural. If a player needs work on a particularstroke, hundredsofballsneedtobegivenso the production of their stroke looksthesameregardlessofwhere theball islocated.Consistencyofgrips,footwork,anticipation,pointofcontactandfollow-through,needtobealmost“carbon”copyofeachother.Stage Two: Control Do you know that there are onlyeightshots thatcanbeexecutedwhenyouhita groundstroke?Theyare: cross court, downthe line, flat, top spin, slice, drop shot, loband “miss-hits” Oncea player reaches theconsistency of getting the balloverthenetandintothecourt, theplayerneeds to start working on controllingthe“where”and“how”typeofshot.Asplayers advance on control, they willcombine these shots, such as “top spincrosscourt, slicedowntheline, topspinlobs, etc.
Stage Three: Depth Mostplayerswanttohittheballaninchabovethenetheight.Ifplayerslookatmostofthegreatplayers, theywillrealizethatmostoftheshotstheyhitareatleastthreefeetoverthenetandlandbetweenthe service line and base line of theiropponents.Theballsthatare“skimmed”over the net, are usually passing shotswhentheplayerscomeuptothenet, orgreatwinnersthatonlyaRogerFedereror anAndy Roddick can do with greatcontrolandconsistency.Stage Four: Power Onceaplayerfeelscomfortablewiththe first three stages, then it is time to createPower.Unfortunately, mosttennisplayersbecomeinjuredbygoingto theFourth Stage too quick into the gameand become frustrated, thus ruining
their weekend gamesandbeingsoreforanentire week due totornmuscles. Powerisgeneratedmostlyby
