REACHING NEW HEIGHTSImagine growing up in today’s world. In many ways, it is an exciting time to come of age, with

the continuing rapid pace of technological and societal change, and access to more information

and opportunities than ever before. Modern life opens our lives to the world as never before,

but with that access comes new challenges and potential pitfalls, especially for youth. At the

same time, the structure of society and families are changing in ways that mean that youth

today require more support than ever before. This is why the work of the Buddy Program is

so critical and why every child needs a mentor.

For today’s youth, the pressure to prepare for life after high school starts earlier than ever. Youth are overscheduled in an attempt to get them the work and extracurricular experiences that will give them an edge. Access to the internet can be a great source of helpful information, but also a source of misinformation, temptation, peer pressure, and even bullying. Families are more mobile, moving away from their traditional extended families and community support systems. In our community, we see more and more families with single parents or both parents working multiple jobs. Because of this, youth are left with more unsupervised time and more “grown-up” responsibilities such as helping to raise their younger siblings. And, despite their best efforts, there may be fewer opportunities for parents and other family members to mentor them and teach them how to be responsible, well-adjusted adults.

Imagine if we could select a carefully screened adult for each child who is there for them on a consistent basis, providing advice and acting as a positive role model. Someone in addition to their parents and their teachers, who can provide another perspective and help to inspire and guide them. And imagine that we can provide a Case Manager for each family to help them ensure that their child is getting the most out of their mentoring relationship and to support the parents in their needs as well.

This is exactly what we do at the Buddy Program, and we believe that EVERY child needs a mentor. This is why we continue to grow our programs, and why we are the second largest mentoring agency in the state of Colorado. This is why we opened an office in Carbondale in 2015 to reach more down-valley youth. This is why we started our LEAD Programs for teenagers, and expanded them to Basalt in 2016. This is why we make sure that each child and their parents receive individualized case management. And this is why our staff and boards are committed to creating new programs aimed specifically at teens and parents in the coming years.

This Annual Report explains a lot about the Buddy Program and our accomplishments in 2015, but it really just scratches the surface. We are deeply grateful to everyone who supports the Buddy Program as a donor, volunteer or champion of our programs and the families that we serve. You made it possible for the Buddy Program to serve 981 youth from Aspen to Carbondale in 2015. We encourage you to read on to explore more about the mentoring movement and how you can help the Buddy Program reach new heights!

In 2002, Nathaly was referred to the Buddy Program by her kindergarten teacher as she was shy,

withdrawn and part of a very large family. She was matched with a Big Buddy, Maidy, who had a lot

of energy and time to give to Nathaly and they remained matched for 8 years. The Buddy Program

also helped with many other support services, including referrals to other agencies for medical

and dental support and a program that provides support to families over the holidays. Her Case

Manager worked with both Nathaly and her family, ensuring that all of their needs were met.

MEET LITTLE BUDDY NATHALY AND BIG BUDDY MAIDY!

When she entered high school Nathaly decided to become a Big Buddy herself through the Peer-to-Peer Program in which high school students mentor elementary or middle school students in their community. For three years she mentored a little girl, paying forward her own mentoring experiences. Nathaly played a critical role in helping this little girl make the transition between elementary to middle school — remaining a constant friend and companion for the three years they were matched.

Upon graduating from High School, the Buddy Program awarded Nathaly a scholarship for her continuing education at the University of Northern Colorado where she is pursuing a degree in education. As the first generation in her family to attend college, the Buddy Program’s scholarship committee was impressed by her goals and commitment to higher education. As they remained close friends through her senior year, Maidy wrote in Nathaly’s graduation card:

average length of matches is 2 YEARS

In the School-based Program, Buddy Pairs see each other at the school weekly

to engage in a variety of games and activities to develop a trusting and positive

relationship. Many of these Pairs move into the Community Program at the end of

the year or spend many years together seeing each other at school.

In the Community and School-based Programs, adult

volunteers are matched with youth ages 6-18. Our

Buddy Pairs are carefully screened and matched in

order to ensure common interests and personalities.

Big Buddies see their Little Buddies on average 3-4

times a month and participate in a variety of free

activities, from hanging out at the X-Games to fly-

fishing, to an excursion to the Glenwood Caverns!

Discounts to performances and activities are also

offered throughout the year.

“I learned that talking to someone and showing appreciation for who they are as a person can help them feel validated and confident. It has made me

more confident in my relationships and in my ability to interact with different people in a variety of situations.

My life goal is to empower women globally. On a small scale through the Buddy Program,

I have started empowering one young woman to be the best version of herself.”

PEER-TO-PEERIn our largest program, high school volunteers meet weekly with their Little Buddies at the local middle or elementary school. High school youth are recruited, recommended and trained to be an effective Big Buddy while Little Buddies are selected by school staff to participate. Big Buddies gain valuable life skills such as communication, building trust, accountability and responsibility while Little Buddies gain a companion and improve their self-esteem, interest and attitude in school. The Buddy Program's Peer-to-Peer Program partners with Aspen Elementary, Middle and High Schools, Basalt Elementary, Middle and High Schools, and Carbondale's Crystal River Elementary and Roaring Fork High Schools.

SCHOLARSHIPScontinuing education scholarship fundIn 2015, the Buddy Program awarded 38 high school seniors who have volunteered as Big Buddies through the Peer-to-Peer program, been involved as a Little Buddy or as a LEAD youth participant $44,000 in continuing education scholarships to attend college or trade school. Seventeen of these graduates were the first in their family to attend college.

“I am at Stanford University. The scholarship helped towards my

expected student contribution of my scholarship which meant I didn’t

have to work during the academic year, which I will have to do the next

3 years. The scholarship was great because adjusting to freshman year is

a lot of work and I didn’t have to also juggle a job to get through school.”

SOPHIE S., 2014 SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT

“It is a tremendous honor to receive this scholarship. The Buddy Program has been such a huge part of my life since I was 6 years-old, and I have truly taken to heart everything I have learned. Mentorship, especially from the Buddy Program and my Big Buddy Bruce, has been such as important part of my life and I will pay it forward!”

extracurricular empowerment scholarships While the Buddy Program believes that matching youth with a mentor will help them tremendously, we also want to ensure that youth in our programs are pursuing their interests and staying active after school and on the weekends. 108 youth in our programs received $13,213 in Empowerment Scholarships to participate in the extracurricular activity of their choice. The most common applications from youth in our programs were for Aspen Valley Ski & Snowboard Club, Aspen Recreation Center, Aspen Santa Fe Ballet, and the Basalt and Carbondale Recreation Departments.

LEMONADE DAYIn 2015 the Buddy Program hosted Lemonade Day for the fourth year. This national financial literacy program

teaches youth the importance of entrepreneurship and goal-setting. The 14-week curriculum culminates

with Lemonade Day — a chance for young entrepreneurs to set up their stands and sell their products.

In August of 2015 the Buddy Program made the strategic decision to shift Lemonade Day to Youth Entity, a youth-serving nonprofit whose mission is to “engage and empower youth to discover their potential by providing real-world learning experiences that prepare them for future success.” We are pleased to see Lemonade Day continue throughout the valley in the hands of a successful non-profit focused on financial literacy.

LEADERSHIPCIRCLEIn 2015, the Buddy Program announced a new recognition level

within our National Council, the Leadership Circle. Leadership

Circle members are donors who make a minimum three-year

pledge of $5,000 or more per year, directed to one of our four

programs, services such as counseling or scholarships, or

general operating support.

The Buddy Program makes a commitment to support our youth for as long as they want to be paired and are eligible to participate in our programs. Our average match length is 4 years – double that of other national mentoring programs. Multi-year gifts help ensure that we can support the youth we serve for the duration that they are in our programs. Lead ership C ircl e Stand u p group

The Buddy Program’s National Council is a group of generous and influential individuals whose leadership

THE BUDDY PROGRAM FLAG PROJECTIn the spring of 2015, a special project was undertaken by the Buddy Program’s

Big and Little Buddies to create the first annual Buddy Program Flag. Through

a series of collaborative artistic workshops, led by Los Angeles-based artist

Janet Roberts and Roaring Fork Valley-based designer Deborah Daine,

the Buddies captured the essence of the Buddy Program through art.

Little and Big Buddies created their own pieces of the flag through

words and imagery to represent how the Buddy Program makes a

difference in their lives. Janet Roberts then took each piece and

assembled them into one large Buddy Program Flag.

“When me and Alex first met, we were strangers. Our friendship is super tight, we even agreed to be

Buddies through high school! Yes, she is almost old, but it’s not the age that matters it’s the bond or “tightness”

of our relationship. Alex is like a sister to me. I tell her everything. I love Alex so much, like soooo much there is

no word to describe how much I love her.”

The Buddy Program saw increased revenue from nearly

all sources in 2015, including significant gains for the Bash,

Individual Donations and the Gingerbread House Workshop. Total expenses remained relatively flat

at $1.5M for the year, despite growing our LEAD Programs and opening a new office in Carbondale to

better serve the down-valley community. Total average cost continues to be about $1,500 per youth and

family served.

FINANCIALS

2015 highlightsAdministrative expense ratio grew slightly to 13%, primarily due to adding capacity in our Business Manager position.

Although grants were down from their record high in 2014, they continue to be a significant source of revenue.

Salaries and associated benefits are our largest expense, accounting for 60% of expenses. The Buddy Program had 12 full-time staff for most of 2015.

Our fundraising expense ratio exclusive of event costs was 14%. The Bash is our largest source of revenue, and also our largest PR event and friend-raiser. The Bash expense ratio fell to 36% for 2015 (down from 44%). Moving the Bash back to our Board Chairman’s home in 2015 allowed us to contain costs while also significantly increasing attendance from 425 in 2014 to over 550 in 2015. The Bash will be in this same location for 2016. Although

events are expensive, the 36% expense is well below the industry benchmark of 50%.

The Gingerbread House Workshop is now our second-largest fundraising event, and has an expense ratio of only 9%. This event is also our largest Buddy Pair Activity with over 125 Buddies participating for free thanks to event sponsors.

Not captured in our financials is the value of the volunteer mentor time contributed by our Big Buddies. A conservative estimate is 30,000 hours of volunteer time, which amounts to $750,000 at $25/hour.

Finally, the Buddy Program maintains an investment account of just over one million dollars, which serves to smooth cash flow throughout the year and over time. Investment incomes from this account contributed 3% to revenues.
