Mark Sands - Orchestra

Mark D. Sands is originally from Long Island. He received his Bachelor of Music ED. Degree from the Crane School of Music in Potsdam, NY and did graduate work at both Crane and the College of St. Rose in Albany, NY. Mr. Sands taught on Long Island, Schenectady and Monticello before settling with his family in Norwich, NY. Mr. Sands has been an active guest conductor at various All County and Area All State festivals. For the past 21 years he has been a NYSSMA string adjudicator and said “I found that adjudicating other teachers' students gave me the opportunity to compare my students with those from other areas of the state. It also helped me find new solo literature, for my students. At the various festivals my students attended, I observed the guest conductors, watching them for new ideas to help get over various music difficulties. I believe all of these experiences made me a better educator and music director.” Recently, Mr. Sands was appointed to be the new conductor of the newly reformed Mid York Concert Band that rehearses and performs in Norwich.

Besides music Mr. Sands' other passion is theater. Having directed 27 productions, last springs' production of “Mary Poppins” was his 22nd and last as director of the Norwich High School spring musicals.
