English with Ms. Shannon Cribbin

Group 1 : Students reviewed phonetic knowledge, repeated and remembered phonic flash cards daily, and associated key vocabulary associated to the phonetic sound. They played phonic games that motivated the students to recall previous learning from the previous lessons. Ms. Cribbin reinforced this learning, using Starfall on the IWB, where students really enjoyed using the IWB independently and listening to the words and instructions in English. They also covered lessons about the weather and jungle, zoo and farm animals. Students worked in groups and pairs of two to collaborate their ideas and knowledge to write, solve problems, be creative and present their ideas both visually and orally. previous lessons. Ms.Cribbin reinforced this learning, using Starfall on the IWB, where students really enjoyed the IWB independently and listening to the words and instructions in English. They also covered lessons about the weather, different types of food and animals. Students worked in groups and pairs of two to collaborate their ideas and knowledge to write, solve problems, be creative and present their ideas both visually and orally. Group 3: Every morning, two students took turns to be the teacher, in order to practice their oral and presentation skills with confidence such as days of the week, remembering which sound was associated with different key vocabulary, like “frog”, “lighthouse”, “donut” etc. Topics covered were holidays and festivals around the world, and which countries these holiday were celebrated in. Students worked in pairs to make a holiday poster and present it to the class. Students covered food, different types , quantities, how to order in a restaurant, and take an order if you were a waitress or working in a shop. Students role played and practiced speaking and remembering English simple sentences. They worked in groups to complete written tasks on worksheets, and create their own menu for a restaurant (eg. Chinese, Indian, Arabic food) and present their menu to the class orally. Social Studies with Mr. Bruce Lewis

For teaching in the Summer School that was held at the British School of

Alexandria, Mr. Lewis switched from English as a Second Language instruction to "Social Studies," which, for the purpose of a mere one week's worth of instruction, he made it be geography exclusively. The students used teacher-prepared materials to learn the vocabulary of political and physical geography, world-wide weather conditions and geological formations, rivers, seas and oceans. Mr. Lewis was assisted by Abanoub Narouz, Schutz School's student body president in 2017-18, who helped with translations. He is inclined to assist again with the summer programme to be held in 2018, because he is enthusiastic regarding the plan by the organizers of the Schutz Summer School to enlist the efforts of other schools in a collaborative design to benefit

the English language learning of children in government schools all over Alexandria, and he is grateful to the administration of the British School for hosting this program on their campus.

Science with Mrs. Amar Moustafa

Science classes focused on reinforcing the students’ understanding of the topics taught to them in their schools, through hands on projects and experiments. They were able to investigate the different parts of an electric circuit, identifying the function of

each of its components. Moreover, students learned about the different ranges of batteries, including small watch batteries and large 9V batteries. Class discussions were also encouraged to discuss different topics like the benefits and dangers of electricity, how to decrease its consumption and the results of cutting the electric current for a day. Students were excited to share their ideas with the help of the high school assistants who played a great role in managing these discussions. As an application to what they have learned about the electric circuit, students made an electric fan using a 6V DC motor, wires, a switch, and a used plastic water bottle. They were able to figure out the result of removing any part of the circuit, and how a short circuit would happen. They also learned how to differentiate between the different types of forces, especially push, pull and gravity. As a final project to this lesson, students made a poster showing the various types of forces, with diagrams and labels. They also explored the different forces upon them, and identified the directions in which these forces are acting. This made it easy for them to study magnets, and see how they work, differentiating between items that get attracted by a magnet, and those that do not.

Through their study of the different body systems, students were able to build a respiratory system, using balloons, a straw and a plastic water bottle. In an interview with Dr. Rasha Saleh, the BSA School Doctor, they identified the ways of keeping the respiratory system healthy. They also made their own digestive system, using orange juice, socks, bags, cups, milk, and food coloring, where they were able to see the digestion process. The last body system students learned about was the skeletal system, where they named some of the bones in this system, and were able to answer questions, like : How do we move? How do we stand up? And what is the importance of having a skeleton? This lead to the discussion of the importance of healthy food to the body. Different ways of making a person’s body healthy (like exercising, and picking healthy food) were discussed with Dr Rasha Saleh as well. Moreover, students learned about the different parts of a plant and the function of each part. They conducted an experiment, using food colors and a flower to see how food moves through it. Different techniques and resources were used in class, including class discussions, songs, videos, PowerPoint Presentations, WB and IWB. Students were able to apply experiments they watched on Youtube.

Students enjoyed learning in a new way where all lessons were differentiated and every student had a chance to try something with his hands. They also enjoyed group projects like making a table electrical fan, and the different body systems. Some of them even decided to become “scientists” after taking these classes. They showed great enthusiasm about experiments, and even asked to conduct those made by their peers in other groups. It was fun working with them.

Art with Ms Nelly Bakr

In Art, students focused on using different types of colors, materials and

techniques. They learned how to create two pictures in one, through an art called Kinoptic Art, using oil pastels and A3 papers. It took them two sessions to finish this project, and they really enjoyed it. Also, students of groups 1 and 2 created a picture using the mosaics technique, by designing their pictures first, then cutting and sticking the little pieces of foam material into their images. They worked really hard, and made lovely pictures.

Students of groups 3 and 4 drew a picture of a city at night, using pastel colors and black cards. They learned how to use the materials properly, spraying their work at the end. Students also worked on silhouettes of trees and designed different pictures, using black markers, pastels, and oil pastels by smudging them together. In addition to that, they enjoyed the printing activity, using paint, sponges, and foam plates, where they drew their pictures on the foam plates, then painted them with sponges, and finally printed their pictures on A4 papers with different colors .
