Law Alumni Network Look Who’s Talking Hosted by Nick Hughes (BCom LLB 92), Managing Director and Group COO, UBS Australasia. James Eyers (BCom LLB 01), Managing Editor, Financial Review Capital magazine, will interview speakers Stephen Minns (BCom LLB 81), Chairman, Australia of King & Wood Mallesons and Michael Rose (BA LLB 85) Chief Executive Partner of Allens.

The globalisation of Australia's major law firms has been a phenomenon in the last three years. Australian firms are expanding through acquisitions, mergers and strategic alliances. Why has this flurry of activities happened

now? Why have law firms chosen different models of expansion? How will the globalisation of Australian law firms affect the legal services profession and business in general? Hear first-hand from two UNSW Law Alumni about the different approach adopted by their firms, and how it has affected their firms, their staff and their clients.

New and Improved Poetic Justice In the past, Poetic Justice was an annual publication produced by LawSoc that contained law-related articles from UNSW

law students. This year, Poetic Justice is going ONLINE! Each week, we will be inviting a contributor to write a piece on a hot topic that students will have the chance to read and comment on - yes, it's going to be interactive!

If you want to get involved as a writer and have your voice heard, or are interested in helping out in any way,

please email us at [email protected] now! If you have any ideas about topics you'd like to read about, also feel free to drop us a line.

Submissions should be a maximum of 1500 - 2000 words in length and are due at 5pm Friday May 24.

Examples of previous student submissions can be found at http://www.unswlawsoc.org/?q=courtofc. For any further information or to send in a submission, contact Katerina Jovanovska at [email protected].

Celebrating National Volunteer Week, running from 13-19 May 2013, the Australian League of Immigration Volunteers (ALIV) is looking for enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers to join its strong volunteer community. ALIV is a volunteer-run organisation that aims to improve the lives of refugees and asylum seekers. It provides assistance to families in detention, those with bridging visas, individuals experiencing difficulties due to the immigration process, and those who have experienced torture and trauma in their countries of origin. Volunteers will be able to assist ALIV in the running of their popular kids, teen

and charity programs, as well as camps.

Volunteering at ALIV is a satisfying and fulfilling experience, where volunteers will be able to see the positive impact of their assistance firsthand. It is an opportunity to work alongside and make lifelong friendships with fellow volunteers, refugees, and new migrants from diverse backgrounds. In the spirit of National Volunteer Week, becoming a member of ALIV’s committed volunteer base is the perfect opportunity to give back to the community. No volunteering experience is necessary; just a positive and fun attitude required! If you are interested in becoming an ALIV volunteer, visit www.aliv.org.au,

and click on ‘Become a Volunteer’ to fill out the application form.

University Refugee Speaker Series The University Refugee Speaker Series is an intervarsity collaboration between NSW law student societies and the NSW Young Lawyers Human Rights Committee. Students from all NSW law schools are invited to attend what is sure to be an informative and particularly relevant series. UNSW is hosting the opening event of the series. The topic for the event is "ASIO Adverse Security Assessments and Indefinite Detention". There are a considerable number of people detained in Australia's immigration detention centres that have been assessed as genuine refugees but have received adverse security assessments. Adverse security assessments indefinitely remove the liberty of these individuals without disclosing evidence of the justification for such an assessment, and without providing them with any right of review. Additionally, Australia's policy of non-refoulment means that those individuals assessed as refugees but

with an adverse security assessment cannot be returned to their home country, and therefore must remain indefinitely in detention in Australia. Join us as our guest speakers discuss the significant human rights issues associated with such a policy. Monday 13 May 18:00-20:00 Chemical Science M11 Guest speakers for this event include: - Paul Power, CEO of the Refugee Council of Australia; - Dr Lesley Lynch, ASIO Campaign Convener for the NSW Council for Civil Liberties; and - Natalie Young, Senior Solicitor for the Refugee Advice and Casework Service (RACS). Light refreshments will be provided. For further information, please contact [email protected]
