President's CornerDear Chamber Members:

We live in an area full of promise. A border city with North Dakota to the west and Minnesota to the east, Fargo Moorhead West Fargo is poised for success as our states top a number of national lists:

North Dakota was named the nation’s top economic growth performer in a report released by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

North Dakota was recognized for permanent economic growth by Area Development Magazine.

North Dakota and Minnesota were among the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis’ Top Economic Growth States.

Our states are nationally recognized for a strong economy and a powerful technology sector. This is one of the many reasons we hold our annual State of Technology event with Senator John Hoeven. The event brings together remarkable businesses and cutting-edge visionaries for a day of discussion on how technology is shaping the landscape of North Dakota. To learn more about the event, see the front cover.

Yet at the heart of our national headlines are local success stories. From Microsoft to Packet Digital to Dog IDs and more, we’re putting our region on the map thanks to great local companies and innovative nonprofi ts. In fact, our metro was just named the third fastest growing city in the U.S. by nerdwallet.com.

Our national spotlight is thanks to the hard work of local individuals, many of whom make up our over 2,100 members representing more than 94,000 employees. For just one example of the great things happening in our region, be sure to check out the profi le of our ChamberChoice Small Business of the Year on page 20.

Thank you for your tireless quest for excellence. We are national superstars thanks to you and your innovative, entrepreneurial spirit.

Elly Peterson Joins The Chamber Full-TimeThe Chamber is happy to welcome Elly Peterson as a full-time staff member. Peterson joins the team as our administrative services coordinator after a four month internship as The Chamber’s public affairs intern. She will be in charge of the front desk as well as assisting with fi nances and events.

“The Chamber is a great environment to work in,” said Peterson. “There is so much positive energy and new things always coming up. It’s an exciting place be.”

Peterson earned her bachelor’s in health communications with a public relations minor from North Dakota State University. She is an alumna of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority.

“My favorite part of living and working in the Fargo Moorhead community is there is always something going on. With our city growing so rapidly, there always seems to be a new outdoor fair or hotspot to check out,” she says.

In Peterson’s free time, she enjoys fi shing, playing tennis, enjoying the nice weather (when we have it), spending time with friends, meeting new people and reading a good book.

Gail Petersen Takes Over the Membership Relations Coordinator PositionAfter two and a half years, Gail Petersen is transitioning from the administrative services coordinator to the membership relations coordinator. In her new role, Petersen is responsible for managing and coordinating the activities of the Public Relations Ambassador and the Member Relations Ambassador committees as well as assisting with the design and execution of our strategic retention plan.

“Before working at The Chamber, I was unaware of how much we do for the business community,” said Petersen. “I want to be a part of the growth and development of the individuals that make up our fantastic business community.”

Petersen and her husband Loren have two daughters, Nicole and Kathryn. She enjoys traveling, camping and reading anything interesting.

Military Appreciation Night at the RedHawks

On Thursday, August 8, our Military Affairs committee and Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks Baseball will honor our local heroes at a special RedHawks game. Service members and their families will receive VIP treatment, beginning with a pregame picnic and social. Patriotic tributes will be peppered throughout the game with surprises for fans and families in store.

Military Appreciation activities have become cherished annual events for The Chamber. The fi rst event, held in 2011 brought together 450 members of our military community for a Bison Football game. In 2012, over 500 families participated in Military Appreciation Night with the RedHawks. We look forward to this event being the largest and best one yet.

“This CIC is a much improved informational display arrangement from my deployment days - and yet still captures all the disciplines needed for the commander to make their decisions. Very professional group - train hard, aim high!”

Dave Zupi (Col/USAF Ret), Triton Systems, Inc.

“We enjoyed the tour and really appreciated the opportunity to see what our local heroes are doing when they drill. I know my co-workers especially liked to see how all the parts fi t together in terms of responsibility. Every section had their own responsibility and all connected together like a jigsaw puzzle.”

On May 30, nearly 150 people attended our fi rst ever Minnesota Legislative Wrap Up, which recapped the landmark Minnesota legislative session. Moderator and long-time public servant Morrie Lanning applauded The Chamber for hosting the event. “In the 38 years I’ve been involved in this arena, this is the fi rst time we’ve had an event of the nature,” said Lanning.

The event featured a panel of local legislators including: Senator Kent Eken, District 4; Representative Ben Lien, District 4a; and Representative Paul Marquart, District 4b. The panel discussed a variety of topics from education to tax reform. “I can’t think of a better way to invest in our state’s economy than education,” said Representative Lien. “We are going to make sure every child in the state is going to have the opportunity to succeed,” said Representative Marquart.

Tim Flaherty and Mike Miller, lobbyists with Flaherty and Hood, also presented their thoughts on how the decisions made during the session will affect business in Minnesota.

2013 Legislative Session Outcomes: Aid Coming for Greater Minnesota Cities

Greater Minnesota received about 66 percent of Local Government Aid (LGA) and about 32 percent of the Homestead Credit Refund (HCR). LGA will increase $80 million (18.74 percent increase), while HCR will increase 119 million (37.09 percent increase) in fi scal year 2015, resulting in stable property tax rates.

In 2013, we joined forces with the Greater Minnesota Economic Development Partnership to pass key legislation to increase the number of tools available to greater Minnesota business. The legislature appropriated $18 million to Greater Minnesota Economic Development, including two new programs to aid business.

1. New Greater MN internship tax credit program (HF 331-Norton, SF 241-Eken)This program is designed to help keep brain power in rural areas. A Greater MN business that provides an internship to a Minnesota postsecondary student (both public and private institutions) will receive 40 percent of the intern’s salary, up to $2,000 per intern, in the form of a tax credit.

2. New Greater MN business expansion program (HF 1578-Savick, SF 1451-Jensen)This program offers Greater MN businesses an incentive to grow in the city where they are already located by providing tax credits. These expanding businesses would be exempt from sale taxes on purchases of tangible personal property, taxable services and construction materials.

Business Leaders Flood Protection Taskforce Stays on CourseThe Business Taskforce for Permanent Flood Protection, led by Tom Dawson, Dawson Insurance, and Ann McConn, Alerus Financial, continues to advocate for meaningful fl ood protection.

The Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) of 2013 has passed the United States Senate, which provides federal authorization for the Fargo-Moorhead Area Diversion Project.

“We continue to be pleased with the momentum behind the diversion project and are thankful for the support it has received from our local congressional delegation,” said Dawson.

Get Out of the Way! Eliminating Company Created Confl ictWednesday, August 7 | 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Hilton Garden Inn Fargo, 4351 17th Avenue South

It takes less energy to create a great place to work and far more energy to create an unhappy one. To create an unhappy workplace, you have to watch the workers every minute. You have to focus on what they aren’t doing or are doing wrong. You have to step in at every turn to correct and redirect. Uff, I am tired just typing the unending tasks of making others miserable and my blood pressure is rising. So much stress!

By starting with the customer experience, focusing on the efforts of the team and appreciating and recognizing good work, people can create a better work environment. This is not rocket science; it’s basic common sense. But why do so many managers create unhappy places to work for their colleagues? Poor training. And before the poor training, lack of clarity of mission or, if the mission is clear, lack of real commitment to the mission. If a mission is posted on a wall but isn’t used by individuals throughout the organization to make

business decisions, then it isn’t really a mission and the company could have saved itself time and money by not bothering to write it. If the mission isn’t clear or isn’t a part of the day-to-day business decisions, then there aren’t operational values driving the decisions and activities of every manager and worker in the company. “Good” companies write missions. “Good” companies write values. “Good” companies provide training. “Good” companies have measures of success. “Good” companies wonder why their results aren’t better. Great companies with great cultures use their mission to drive behavior and focus energy. Great companies with great cultures expect their workers to hold each other accountable to a set of core values. Great companies focus on their customers and recognize that happy customers are the result of happy workers. There are many differences between great companies and “good” ones. It’s sad how much energy “good” companies expend to stay in the game when becoming great requires either the same or quite probably less energy.

Leann Wolff is a principle at Great Outcomes Consulting, a member since 2009.

Join Leann Wolff on August 7 and learn more about how to get rid of a confl ict culture at your workplace. Cost to attend (includes lunch) is $25 for members, $30 for member walk-ins and $45 for general admission. Register at FMWFChamber.com or call 218.233.1100.
