Beginner’s Corner by Lyn Giuffridda Items on the convention card are printed in black,

red, or blue ink. Items in black are neither

announced or alerted. Anything in red must be

alerted. For example, if you and your partner have

an agreement that a new suit by responder after a

weak two level opening bid is not forcing,

responder's bid of a new suit must be alerted by the

opener. Playing Jacoby Two Notrump, the opener

must alert that bid. Do not explain what the bid

means unless asked to do so by the opponent. Items

in blue must be announced. Jacoby transfers are

printed in blue ink and the 1 notrump opener must

say "transfer" when the bid is made by partner. If

you play a short club, responder must say "could be

short" when partner makes the bid. The opponent

whose turn it is to bid next is the only one who can

question the meaning of a bid.

Celebrity Series: Jerry Helms - Feb. 7 & 8 Jerry Helms will be presenting a two day land cruise on February 7 and 8 at VBBC. The topic is "Defend to Win!". Jerry is an expert player, author, and teacher. He writes a monthly article, "Ask Jerry", for the Bridge Bulletin. His dynamic and engaging style makes bridge learning entertaining and successful. Our members who have attended his seminars rave about the classes and can't wait to return for more. Here is what some other successful bridge educators say about Jerry: "Jerry is that rare combination of a great teacher, a fine bridge player, and a vibrant personality. He has a special knack for organizing and presenting material in a manner that can be easily understood by players at all levels." Audrey Grant "Jerry has a unique rapport with his audience. He creates an instant link and people soak up everything he says. He manages to hit just the right level for all levels of players. Something for everyone. They love his sense of humor and his fabulous presentation." Barbara Seagram Jerry's lectures are presented with humor in a relaxed, easy-to-understand style. His unique, hands-on method combines interactive lectures with the play of pre-duplicated lesson hands. Those attending will be given a unique, professionally prepared "take home" booklet. These cover all the lesson points and provide the finishing touch for a great learning experience. Friday, February 6 after the game, Jerry will have a bonus question and answer session. Refreshments will be served. Start writing down your questions now as you play difficult boards. Then on Saturday and Sunday we'll start out with a breakfast followed by a session with Jerry. Lunch will be provided at the break and then a second learning session. The same schedule will be followed both days. The cost for this event is $180 for members and $200 for non-members. Please register with Kim. Don't miss this very special weekend!

Mentoring Program Mentoring pairings have been made and posted. Please arrange to play with your mentoring partner.

Bridge Education by Lyn Giuffrida Free Lesson! On Tuesday, January 27th, we'll have an open house and offer a free lesson to all those who attend. There will be one lesson for people who have never played bridge and another for those who have played but would like to learn more about the club and our education program. Flyers are on the table. Please distribute to your friends who might be interested. We need your support to help grow our club. The lesson is from 9:30 to 11:30 and refreshments will be served. Anyone wanted to attend should register with Kim. Guest Lecture Series A unique Guest Lecture Series will be held in March. Want to learn how to "see" which opponent holds the key missing face cards? Learn deductive reasoning and tips that will allow you to become Sherlock Holmes at the bridge table. Avoid guess work! Look for details in the next few weeks.

Bidding Review Series Each Wednesday there is a class on a bidding topic. A partner and reservation are not required. The class costs $15 and is from 9:30 to 11:30. WINNIE EVANS We all knew Winnie as a lover of the game of bridge, a dedicated teacher, a director, always a giver. Some of us were lucky enough to know her as a partner, at the table or online, a mentor and a “straight talking” friend. What many of you may not know is her love of family, her many closets filled with enough different outfits for an entire year, many gathered from her mother, aunt and Mariangela. She was amazed that she became such a highly regarded teacher, mentor and director. She couldn’t believe the outpouring of love that came from our members—the emails, cards, phone calls, hugs. As she said good-bye at our Christmas lunch she tried to let you know how much you meant to her. I want to thank you for making her last days so meaningful, for letting Winnie know how much her life meant. A last Winnie quote: “Not many people get to attend their own send off.”

2015 MENTOR/MENTEE

NOVICE PROGRAM Since 2003 VBBC has run a successful Mentor Program with the intent of helping novices move to the higher limited games. This has been a great experience for all participants and we are looking forward to another productive year.

MENTORS NEEDED (150-299mp)

We hope you will help us once again this year by volunteering your time and talent in this endeavor. This can be a very worthwhile experience for you as well as the obvious benefits for you mentee. If you have between 150 and 299 points you can Mentor a novice, a newer player with less than 25 points, by playing with them in the regularly scheduled 0-299 games. Mentors are not expected to “teach” nonstop but rather to build mentee confidence, in a considerate, diplomatic way.

MENTEES WANTED (0-24mp) We hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to play at our regularly scheduled games. The goal is to help you feel more comfortable playing at a more advanced level, with a higher caliber of player and hopefully, at our Club!!

Congratulations!

PLAYER PROFILE

KAREN AND STAN YELLIN

My first encounter with Karen & Stan: She had just played a hand extremely well and Stan remarked, “Boy you’d be scary good if yo counted.” Turns out they’re both “scary good,” counting or not. Karen was born in Jamestown, NY and grew up in Bethlehem, PA. Stan is a product of Elizabeth, NJ. They met while Karen was working as a nurse at the College Health Center at Lehigh University. Stan, who is a Family Practice Physician came to Lehigh as Director of the Health Center. Stan is currently on the faculty for the family practice residency program at Sacred Heart Hospital in Allentown, PA. Karen is retired after spending most of her career in Critical Care and Recovery Room nursing. Stan learned how to play bridge as a child. Eleven years ago, after being together for nine years, Karen decided to surprise Stan by secretly taking bridge lessons at the local community college. And a great bridge partnership was born. They spend about four months of the year in Sebastian and the rest in Bethlehem. Karen and Stan also enjoy hiking, birding, and reading. They have four children, residing in DC, Boston, PA and VA. Stan is also a bridge director and will soon be directing at VBBC.

CONDUCT & ETHICS PROCEDURES Anyone playing bridge at the Vero Beach Bridge Center may submit a grievance or issue of misconduct or ethics to the Conduct and Ethics Committee in either of the following manners. A written letter fully describing the issue(s) involved may be given to any Ethics Committee member or placed in a sealed envelop and given to Kim Howard in the office. Alternatively, a private conversation may be held with any Committee member to fully describe the issue(s). Members of the Committee are:

Marge Desmery Bob Longbine Merle Hauser Herb Crowder Debbie Brower

LeeAnn Daly, Chairperson

SCORE CORRECTIONS

Players who believe they have an incorrect recorded

score should contact their opponents for confirmation

that the score is actually incorrect. Once agreement

has been reached as to the correct score, please

contact the game director. The game director can

make appropriate adjustments. This should be done

within 24 hours of the game. Calling a director at

home on Christmas Eve night is not a great idea.

9 A.M. FRIDAY STUDENT GAME

A brief lesson at a somewhat slower pace makes this a great game for students or those who want to give duplicate bridge a try. The session is 9 a.m. until noon. The fee is members $9 and $11 nonmembers. And is

held at the VBBC.

9 A.M. TUESDAY STUDENT GAME A brief lesson at a somewhat slower pace makes this a great game for students or those who want to give duplicate bridge a try. The session is 9 a.m. until noon. The fee is members $10 and $12 nonmembers And is held at the I.R. Shores Community Center.
