    "The Bridge Builder"

    An old man going a lone highway,

    Came, at the evening cold and gray,

    To a chasm vast and deep and wide.

    Through which was flowing a sullentide

    The old man crossed in the twilightdim,

    The sullen stream had no fear for

    him;

    But he turned when safe on theother side

    And built a bridge to span the tide.

    "The Bridge Builder"

    Old man, said a fellow pilgrimnear,

    You are wasting your strength withbuilding here;

    Your journey will end with theending day,

    You never again will pass this way;

    Youve crossed the chasm, deep and

    wide,

    Why build this bridge at eveningtide?

    The builder lifted his old grayhead;

    Good friend, in the path I havecome, he said,

    There followed after me to-day

    A youth whose feet must pass thisway.

    This chasm that has been asnaught to me

    To that fair-haired youth may apitfall be;

    He, too, must cross in the twilightdim;

    Good friend, I am building thisbridge for him!

    "The Bridge Builder" (Paraphrase)

    An old guy traveling on a road comes up to a huge canyon whichwas flowing with water. He crossed the river at night, not fearing thestrength of the tide. Once he reached the other side, he built a

    bridge to cross the canyon.

    A fellow traveler asks him why he is building the bridge, for he is justwasting strength and time. You will finish this when the day is over,and you will never use it again. So why would you build this bridgeto cross this canyon?

    The old man lifted his head and tells him, "Fellow traveler whofollowed me today. Someone young will later use this bridge. Withoutit, they might die because he too must cross the river at night. So Iam building this bridge for him!"

    "The Bridge Builder" (Attitude)

    The old man was Hopefulwhenever he crossed the chasm,while the pilgrim was Naive about what the old man wasdoing. Whenever the old man explained his reasoning tothe pilgrim, the whole story became Inspirationalbecause

    the old man was building the bridge so that a youth cancross the chasm without falling.

    "The Bridge Builder" (Shifts)

    The first shift in the poem is whenever the old man crosses

    the chasm. This is because it goes from describing a hugedark chasm into telling about how the old man crossed itfearlessly. The poem then shifts again whenever thepilgrim arrives and begins speaking to the old man. This isbecause he is naive about why the man built a bridge to

    cross the chasm. The final shift occurs whenever the oldman is explaining why he built the bridge and whom thebridge is for.
