feel uncomfortable and uneasy and sometimes display other emotions such as nervousness or annoyance, while this might seem unfavourable, it actually means they are learning. Once they have grappled with the idea and persisted with the learning, they start to learn, then they become more comfortable, they move to the ‘construct’ stage, where we are making meaning of our learning. Once we get to this stage the learner once again starts to enjoy the process and feel good

about themselves. Think about learning required to hit a tennis ball, initially you are excited about the being able to play tennis, but once you get started and realise it wasn't as easy as you expected, you start to get frustrated and perhaps consider giving up, you are ‘in the pit’. With repeated effort and feedback you start master the skill and it gets easier. As a result you become more confident and begin to enjoy playing tennis.

Thank you Thank you to everyone who has contributed to making this term successful. Thank you to our teachers who provide outstanding educational opportunities for our students and make Tooleybuc Central School a place which the develops quality people. Thank you to our parents for supporting your children and our school. It is working together with you which will allow us to do great things. We must also of course thank our students for their contribution to our school. Without you Tooleybuc Central School would not be the place that it is. Have a safe and happy holiday.

Foundation Andrea Hazlett (Class Teacher) Foundation Class 2015 has made wonderful progress over the first two terms of the school year. This week I asked them to tell me what they have liked learning best at school. I have recorded their responses to share with you all: “I like learning in the “Engine Room” I like reading. I’m a good reader”. Jakson “I like learning how to read. I like number readers, the ones about Maths. I like going up the levels.” Makenna “I like writing, you have to learn letters.” Kayla “I like reading in the ‘Engine Room’ because I like reading. I like reading about a girl named Sam.” Rebekah “I like doing writing. I like to do letters. I like to read the Little Chimp books.” Isabel “I like learning. I like counting by twos and running around when we do a game on sports day.” Billy “I like writing best. When I do a story I can draw and colour in straight. I have fun in maths. I can play hopscotch.” Campbell “I like to learn writing. I like to do sentences. I am good at writing. I like to write about a story like the ‘Magic Hat’.” Alister “I like to write about horses and I like writing about friends.” Riley

“I like working hard and playing sports outside.” Sebastian “I like writing about stories we have listened to. Stories like ‘Me and My Cat’. I like doing Art.” Alyssa “I like doing Art because I like using the paint. I like counting by threes. I can go up to fifteen.” Lucy As you can see Foundation students enjoy many different aspects of the curriculum and see themselves as successful learners and are willing to embrace challenging skills.

Merit Scheme

To reward our students’ positive behaviour Tooleybuc Central School runs a strong Merit Scheme. Students are awarded ‘Merit Awards’ during the school year and an accumulation of these merits equates to levels. Bronze Level 10 Merits Silver Level Bronze plus and extra 20 Merits Gold Level Silver plus an extra 30 Merits. Primary students are given a ‘Lucky Dip’ at the achievement of each level. Then they are presented with a certificate at our Whole School Assembly. Secondary students with the highest GEM score in each class receive the Student Of The Fortnight on Assembly. Those students who achieve Gold Level or the correct GEM average are invited to attend our End of Year Merit Excursion.

Winter Warmers… Chilli Bean Soup with Multi-grain Bread – Serves 4 You will need:

1 tablespoon olive oil 1 onion, chopped

1 X 420g can creamed corn 1 teaspoon crushed

garlic

1 – 2 teaspoons sweet chilli sauce 2 cups water

1 X 810g can salt-reduced crushed tomatoes

1 X 420g can red kidney beans, drained

Multi-grain toast fingers

Heat oil in a large saucepan and stir-fry the onions over a high heat for one minute. Reduce the heat, cover and cook over a low to medium heat for five minutes. Stir in all the remaining ingredients except for the corn chips, then bring to the boil over a medium heat, stirring to prevent the soup from sticking to the bottom of the pan. Serve straight away in cups and saucers or in small bowls. Toast the bread and cut into fingers, children will love dipping them into this soup.

Winter Warmers…

Creamy Broccoli Soup – Serves 4 You will need:

1 tablespoon olive oil 1 onion, chopped

600g broccoli, trimmed and chopped 2 cups

vegetable or chicken stock

1 teaspoon dried basil leaves 3 - 4 cups milk

Coarsely ground black pepper (optional)

Heat oil in a medium-large saucepan and stir-fry the onion over medium-high heat 2 minutes. Add the broccoli and stir-fry a further two minutes. Reduce the heat, cover and cook over low heat for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the stock and bring to boil. Cover and cook over low-medium heat 10 minutes. Allow to cool slightly. Using a blender, blend the soup in batches with the milk until smooth (add enough milk to reach desired consistency). Return the soup to the saucepan and heat through, stirring. Serve at once, sprinkled with a little pepper if liked. Other ideas: Adding plenty of vegies to soups make nutritious light meals when served with bread, bread rolls or toast. Experiment with different seasonal vegies. Try replacing broccoli with finely chopped pumpkin or carrot.

Secondary News

Sean Connell (Head Teacher) I was pleased to meeting the parents and students of our upcoming Year 7 during the Year 6 transition day on the 18th of June. It was an excellent opportunity for all students in Year 6 to experience the diversity of classes and topics available to them in High School and to compare the difference to Primary School in having multiple teachers every lesson. This was also an ideal time for parents to voice any questions they may have about the expectations of staff and academic content.

Stage 6 students are reaching the halfway point of their HSC subjects and need to ensure they are on top of the plethora of upcoming assessment tasks. This can be a particularly challenging and stressful particularly if the tasks are left to the last minute. Students need to maintain communication with their teacher and voice any concerns or difficulty they may have with tasks and time management well before the due date to ensure they don’t feel snowed under. Coming toward the end of the semester, it’s time to remind students, your teachers are currently writing reports and these will be distributed on Friday the 26th of June. I would like to thank all teachers for their dedication during this very hectic time of year.

SCIENCE Sean Connell (Science Teacher)

Year 7 Science Year 7 are currently completing a topic on Forces. Students are looking at the distinction between contact and non-contact forces and applying this information to group practical challenges. In one such challenge, the students were tasked with applying their knowledge of buoyancy to create a boat from nothing but two sheets of paper designed to hold an increasing number of weights over time. The winning team of Kiara, Grace, Sam and Thomas created a paper water craft capable of holding over 200g of brass weights and remaining afloat for over 3 minutes! A remarkable achievement.

Grace, Sam and Kiara with their winning paper boat model.

The students recently examined the properties of static electricity and can be seen here attempting to bend the flow of water.

Phoebe attempting to bend the flow of water.

Jake and Brees applying non-contact forces to a piece of paper.

Year 8 Science The students of Year 8 have recently commenced a new topic on Body Systems. Having just completed their major Student Research Report, the students are eager to apply their analytical skills to a new area of Science. This past week has seen the students follow a camera through the digestive system of a person, witnessing each of the major organs from the inside and their importance in the functioning of the human body from the Oesophagus to the Colon. This week the students will get up close and personal with the circulatory system as they dissect a heart to view the four chambers and major blood vessels that lead into and out of the heart. Squeamish students need not apply.

Year 9/10 Science The students of Year 9/10 have been attempting to conduct scientific investigations to solve problems centred on their areas of interest as part of their Student Research Reports. For some this was an analysis of the growth rate of wheat in different soil types, for others it was to measure the level of implosion by aluminium cans with varying volumes of water or a measure of oxygen production from the breakdown of Hydrogen Peroxide by yeast cells. Despite being a lot of fun; the students have come to understand the challenges faced by scientists in completing scientific investigations and need to control variables to prevent unexplained results. Year 9/10 are now looking to the teachings of Sir Isaac Newton and his three laws of motion and applying this knowledge to the challenges of space and time travel. Biology Stage 6 Leeta Rutherford (Biology Teacher) The Biology class are now officially half-way through their HSC course with two units finished and two to go. As of this week they have started their third unit ‘A Search for Better Health’. The two units they have already completed are ‘Maintaining a Balance’ and ‘Blueprint of Life’. As a part of the ‘Blueprint of Life’ unit and their fourth unit (‘The Human Story’) some of the students and staff are participating in the National Geographic Genographic Project. So far meant that those of us participating have done DNA cheek swabs and sent these off to be processed and in a few weeks we will find out our DNA results. The results will tell us the migration paths our ancient ancestors followed thousands of years ago and we will learn the details of our ancestral makeup. This also includes finding out if any of us have any Neanderthal and/or Denisovian DNA. We all cannot wait to see our results. Anyone of any age can participate in the Genographic Project as it is a world-wide research project, if you are interested please contact me at school and I can provide with the details and costs or go online to the National Geographic website.

Brunswick offers an Associate Degree in Fashion and Textiles Merchandising, Certificate IV in Fashion and Textiles Merchandising, an Associate Degree in Fashion Design and Technology, and the Bachelor of Fashion (Design Technology). Check out the Brunswick campus and courses at RMIT Open Day on Sunday 9 August, 10am – 4pm. The 4-year B. Fashion Design is taught partly at the City campus and partly at the Brunswick campus. NOTE: Some similar fashion courses are available at Holmesglen (City campus), Box Hill Institute and Kangan Institute (Richmond campus). EARLY OFFER ‘ASPIRE’ PROGRAM AT LA TROBE UNIVERSITY – The Aspire program, launched in 2014, saw 1,100 students receive early offers for courses at La Trobe for 2015. Many students work hard to make positive changes in their schools and communities through volunteering, and La Trobe wants to recognise these efforts. La Trobe has announced a working partnership with the Country Fire Authority and the Duke of Edinburgh program. These partnerships reflect the desire of La Trobe to collaborate with people and organisations that share the vision of making a positive difference, and will help recognise the impact students are making in their communities. More information about the Aspire program can be found on the La Trobe website. Online applications opened on Monday 1 June. See: www.latrobe.edu.au and search Aspire program. AUSTRALIAN CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY (ACU) has six campuses, two of which are in Victoria, in Melbourne (Fitzroy) and in Ballarat. It has over 33,000 students nationally, with over 10,000 in Melbourne. It offers higher education courses and VET courses (through ACUcom). In 2016 some new higher education degrees will be on offer. From 2016 the Bachelor of Biomedical Science will be offered in double degrees with B. Applied Public Health, B Laws and B. Business Administration. These will give students with broad interests the opportunity to study those interests, while potentially increasing career opportunities. From 2016 the B. Exercise and Sports Science degree will be a pathway to the post graduate Masters in Clinical Exercise Physiology and Masters in High Performance in Sport. The former B. Sport and Health Science will be replaced with the B. Physical Activity and Health Science. This will be a pathway to the Masters in Teaching, or to the two Masters programs available from the B. Exercise and Sport Science (above). As noted in a previous edition, ACU will offer the B. Physiotherapy at the Ballarat campus in 2017. Prerequisites are at least 30 in English (EAL) or 25

in any other English and a study score of at least 25 in one of biology, chemistry or physics (to be confirmed). NOTE: EAL refers to English as an Additional Language (this usually relates to international students). ACU offers the Early Achievers Program (EAP), recognising that students have more to offer than academic results. ACU will consider contributions made to the community through school or workplace, community organisations and cultural and/or religious groups. Applications open: Mon 19 August. See: www.acu.edu.au/early-achievers. BOX HILL INSTITUTE’S CERTIFICATE IV IN DISABILITY – Box Hill has partnered with AMAZE Victoria to co-deliver the Certificate IV in Disability. It is the only course that offers the Support individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder unit, an area which is growing in the industry. Negotiations are also in process to offer students the opportunity to undertake Sign Language (Auslan) Level 1 as a part of this course. The course provides access to industry, guest speakers and targeted skills development sessions (e.g. The Road to Empowerment – drama therapy techniques). The course is offered 2 full days per week. Job placement in the industry is high for graduates. OBTAINING AN APPRENTICESHIP – Well and truly gone are the days when a 15 year old could easily obtain an apprenticeship. The employer would assist with transport to the work site, would teach the apprentice from scratch, and the apprentice would often leave school with little idea of what the trade involved. Nowadays, employers generally prefer the new apprentice to have completed Year 12, be at least 18 years old, with a driver’s licence and a vehicle, and to have completed a pre-apprenticeship in the trade involved. Sometimes the apprentice will have completed the pre-apprenticeship while at school in a VET program (e.g. Automotive), or alternatively they will have completed it at a VET provider after completing Year 12 (taking about four months). Pre-apprenticeship courses are available in many trades such as automotive, carpentry, electro technology, furniture making and plumbing. Once these requirements have been met, the would-be apprentice must find an employer willing to take them on to complete the apprenticeship. These can sometimes be found among friends, relatives, sports associates and so on. Alternatively, Group Training Companies employ many apprentices. See: www.grouptraining.com.au. It is also interesting to note that many apprentices these days are well over 18 years; they are quite commonly well into their 20’s, after leaving another career.

Hospice We have a donation jar at the front office for the Swan Hill Hospice, if you have any small loose change it will go to a wonderful cause. Our PJ Casual Day will be going towards the Hospice.

Label everything! Your child’s belongings can get easily misplaced at school. Please label all of your child’s belongings with their name. Don’t forget books, pencil cases, clothing and school bags. Writing school notes If your child is absent, you need to write a note within seven days: 1. It must explain why your child missed school 2. Include how many days your child was away 3. Remember to include the date or dates 4. Place this in your child’s school bag 5. Remind your child to give the note to the teacher 6. If your child is going to be away for more than

three days please call the school to let the teacher know. You will still need to write a note when your child returns to school.
