Spring is so close we are all getting excited to once again feel the warmth of the sun, see
green grass and leaves on the trees. We have endured high winds, polar vortexes, ice
storms, snow and gray cloudy skies. Hopefully with all that behind us, let us begin to start making plans to get our
boats in the water and ready for a summer of enjoyment and fun. February and March are typically the busiest
months on our calendar and this year was no exception. On February 9, P/Lt/C Christopher Hoover, AP and Lt/C
Nelson Evans, AP presented a maritime training course to volunteer firemen from Luna Pier, MI and Morin Point, MI
Volunteer Fire Departments. They discussed the Rules of the Road, Navigational Aids, Adverse Boating Conditions,
Lights and Sound Signals. After their session was complete, ODNR Natural Resource Officers Sarah Genzman and
Travis Fitzgerald presented boating accident/fatality data, Lake Erie commercial fishing net hazards and cold water
survival gear. Finishing the day was Woody Wlodarczyk of the USCG Auxiliary, who explained USCG search and res-
cue involvement and activities. It was a great way for us to collaborate with the ODNR and USCG Aux in presenting
important information to the first responders. ABC classes in February and March kept the Educational Department
busy meeting the demanding and hectic schedule. Classes were held at the Toledo Lucas County Port Authority and
Monroe County Community College. In April, classes will be held at River View Yacht Club and the Perrysburg Town-
ship Fire Department. The Toledo Sail and Power Squadron will be hosting the D/29 Spring Conference at Maumee
Bay State Park and Resort from March 15 thru March 17. The theme is “Flip Flop Into Spring” and if you attend bring
your summer boating attire and some of your favorite flip flops. D/Lt/C Felicia Evans is coordinating the event so if
you have any questions, please contact her (419) 304-2391.
FOR THE GOOD OF THE SQUADRON - Kroger Grocery Stores gives away 4 million dollars to non-profits every year.
All that is required is to register your non-profit with their Community Rewards Program. When you sign up your
Kroger Plus Card, every time you shop and use your card at checkout, Kroger will make donation to the registered
non-profit. I have completed the registration process and once this is approved and completed, we hopefully can
take advantage of this program. The Columbus and Sandusky squadrons in D/29 have been enrolled and their mem-
bers are currently enrolled. Once everything has been finalized, there will be more detailed enrollment information
communicated. I hope our members will take advantage of this no cost opportunity to benefit our squadron.
REMINDER - It is very important that when you RSVP for our Monthly General Meetings and for some reason you
cannot attend, it is necessary for you to cancel your reservation. Dinners are ordered based on headcount and the
squadron is charged accordingly. Failure to cancel your reservation within 24 hours before the event, you will be
invoiced for the advertised price. The squadron cannot continue to absorb these costs.

Wow it’s April! We’ve completed 3 safe boating classes, are in the process of completing another, and have
one more to go. Seamanship is also starting this month. 5 people have signed up for cruise plan-
ning with Dan and Mary Strohmeier leading the class. They’ve got tons of experience and will
share some fun adventures with you.
The National Conference in Orlando was a look into the future of Americas Boating Club. The
winds of change are taking place with the educational mission of the Squadron. More online clas-
ses with the Squadrons providing the mentoring seems to be the new trend. Instead of the in-
structors being the “sage on stage” we’re all going to be the “guides on the side.” Some of the
Squadrons have started “Operation Jump Start” which provides 2 hours or more of on the water
instruction on a potential new members boat. Free on the water training is what everyone today is looking for. Many new
seminars are in the works and other courses are being revamped. Check out the Americas Boating Club website for videos
and more. Stay tuned.
Thanks to everyone that have helped with the safe boating classes. Phyllis Zibbel has been a God send and Chris Hoover has-
n’t slowed down a bit. Have patience while I get my feet wet as your SEO. Boating season is upon us!!!!!!!!!!!!

Public Relations—“Toledo Blade” article concerning Nelson and Felicia Evans and other TSPS squadron members who handled an on-the-water emergency of a fellow boater appeared in Matt Markey’s “Outdoor” column. Article also included a large graphic outlining upcoming ABC classes. Article and picture of Nelson Evans and Chris Hoover in the Monroe News and the Point/Shoreland Journal highlighting the boating training TSPS offered Luna Pier Firefighters.
Educational Officer – Nelson Evans
7 students completed and passed the first ABC class of 2019 held at Port Authority. Monday, March 4 starts next ABC class (9 students signed up) at Monroe Community College. Nelson reviewed the remaining ABC classes scheduled: Port Authority, River View Yacht Club, Perrysburg Twp. Fire Station.
Nelson attended the USPS National meeting in Orlando. He discussed at length the USPS Education Department meeting and learned what is being planned for the future. USPS education format expected to be changing: going to online instruction, webinars, the focus will be hands-on with on-the-water training and not just a classroom setting. Student would go online and be assigned an instructor/mentor who would take the student on the water in the student’s boat and find out what they are looking to learn. Training Centers would be set up. USPS squadrons need to be re-thinking their teaching format and how to adjust to these future extensive changes.
At the USPS National meeting teaching aid competition it was announced that Capt. Chris Hoover took first place with the teaching aid he designed and submitted. Congratulations, Chris, you are awesome!!
Administrative Officer–John Mather absent
Treasurer: Larry Cole absent Asst. Treasurer Dale Overly reported TSPS is solvent.
Secretary: Joyce Mease Office Max discount cards have been mailed to squadron members by National.
Commander’s Report: Cdr Fred Zibbel Fred is looking into registering the squadron for the Kroger “Rewards” program where rebate on purchases is given to the squadron once a member who has signed up for the program makes purchases. Both Co-lumbus and Sandusky have experienced substantial rebates.
Committee Reports: Membership/Member Involvement will invite to the TYC meeting/Welland Canal program the 7 stu-dents who just completed ABC class.
Old Business:
P/C Deb Shaulis, P who could not attend tonight’s meeting has received information from the Toledo Harbor Light Society that the inscription selected for the TSPS lighthouse window purchased has too many characters for space allotted. Consensus to-night is that we should change inscription to read: “Toledo Sail & Power Squadron, America’s Boating Club, educating boaters since 1938.”
March 15-17 is District 29 Spring Conference at Maumee Bay State Park. D/29 Cdr-Elect Felicia Evans discussed the education break-out sessions. Toledo Squadron hosts the Friday evening welcome party. District conference Chair is P/D/C Al Hess, AP
