The Hollywood Jack Memorial One Pocket was rescued this year and held in Bellflower, California at Hard Times Billiards over the 4th of July weekend! The one pocket play was spectacular all weekend as fans filled the room and watched online to see who would earn the title. All matches were a race to 3, double elimination; one race to 4 in the finals. The field was capped off at 32 players and play began Saturday afternoon on the beautiful Gold Crown 9-foot tables. $1,000 was graciously added by owner Eddie Arregiun. And Jay Helfert was the smooth Tournament Director. While most players were from California, a few ventured from out of state to compete. On Sunday, four players were left on the winner’s side - Sylver Ochoa from Texas against Morro Paez, while Jimmy Schaeffer from LA played against Larry "Moto" Evans. Sylver would defeat Morro in a hill-hill thriller to reach the hotseat while Motto defeated fast-paced Hawaiian Jimmy to also reach the hotseat. On the one-lose side there were eight players who fought hard Saturday to get to continue play on Sunday - Frank “Dabarbr” Almanza, Jose Parica, Jerry Matchin, “One Pocket Rich” Grenier from LA, Jim Galagi from Arizona, Wayne Pullen, Nick Spano and Al Vafa (from Santa Barbara). The hotseat match showed true one pocket talent and was a great match for the locals – Motto down 0-1 against young-gun Sylver Ochoa had his hands full also being down 6-2 in ball count in the second game. But Motto pulled through and won that game, made a

ball on the break the next game and won, then won the third game to seal the win 3-1 to send Sylver to the one-loss side. Jimmy Schaeffer & Nick Spano each placed an impressive 5th in this tough event and earned $250. Morro Paez won a close match against Al Vafa (Al placed 4th and won $340 for his efforts). Morro then had another chance at Sylver and again it would go hill-hill but Sylver was determined after his hotseat loss and won

the final game against Morro 3-2. Morro had a great event, coming from behind during many of his matches to earn a respectable 3rd place and $440. The finals was one race to 4 and again Sylver Ochoa (February 2010 T-Town Classic One Pocket Champ) would meet up with local player Larry “Motto” Evans. This match was all Sylver this rematch, though, as the 24-year old would not let Motto earn a single game and Sylver won the final match of the tournament 4-0. Sylver won $800 for his hard work and First Place finish. Motto played great all day, even after getting off of work at 8am that Sunday morning. Motto earned $540 for his second place finish. On July 24 & 25, Tables Steaks South (soon to be known as Billiards Ink) in Englewood, Colorado hosted the Denver 10-Ball Open and Cue Show. This inaugural $1,500 added event boasted 47 of the best players from across the state, including a couple from New Mexico and Ontario, Canada. Chris Byrne Custom Cues and many other local cue makers and vendors also took the opportunity to display their handcrafted work.Of the elite, Boulder resident Jay Hlavachek was crowned the Denver 10-Ball Open Champion. He has competed in several professional events in the past but this hometown victory was so sweet for many reasons. When Hlavachek arrived Saturday morning he was less than impressed with his warm up

performance. The full-time real estate agent has been focusing more on his career than his pool game. But once the tournament kicked off, the slimmer new healthier Hlavachek came alive and tore through the field to go undefeated into the finals. In the first match on Sunday, Hlavachek would send Bill Skinner to the B-side with a 7-4 victory. While there, the senior player eliminated Tony Piazza, Reuben Silva, and Kiko Ibarra for a chance

at a rematch with Hlavachek. Skinner came on strong claiming the first set 7-2. Now, in a shorter race to 5, it seemed he still had the momentum, taking the first game. The two kept it close, exchanging racks until 3-3 when Hlavachek pulled away to close out the set 5-3. “I’m excited. It feels good to win. This is something to improve on,” said the modest Hlavachek.Online brackets can be found at AzBilliards.com. Bobby Brown, Jr., along with his girlfriend and business partner Antoinette Wharton, are the proud new owners and believe

in creating a service-oriented atmosphere for all customers. The ten 9-footers and nine 7-footers have all been newly recovered. There are also a snooker table and a billiard table. Other improvements include a larger menu selection, lower food and prices, a cheerful, friendly staff, daily fresh baked cookies and brownies, and a future tattoo parlor (hence, Billiards “Ink”). Some may think it’s crazy to invest in a pool hall during the off season and in these tough economic times, but Brown and Wharton are both optimistic about the upcoming challenges. They’re here for the long haul and plan to continue promoting pool by hosting more high profile money-added events, pool clinics, and a variety of leagues. “When you bite off more than you can chew, you just keep

Ramon Mistica went undefeated through a field of 50 entrants, on hand for the California Pool Player Tour on the weekend of July 17-18. The $750-added event drew 24 Pro and A-level players, as well as 26 B and C-Level players to Break Time Billiards in Modesto, CA. Special thanks to Joe Gonzales, owner of Break Time Billiards, and his friendly staff for hosting the second stop and making everyone feel welcome. From among the winners’ side final four, Mistica got into a double hill struggle versus his eventual finals opponent, Ernesto Dominguez. Mistica prevailed to get into the hot seat match versus Deo Alpajora, who’d sent Teymour Ansari west 7-2. Mistica gained the hot

seat with a 7-2 win over Alpajora. On the one-loss side, Ansari moved over to face Paul McCaffrey, who’d defeated Chris Cruz and Oscar Dominguez, both 7-5. Dominguez’ first stop on his trip back to the finals began with Santos Sambojon, who’d

gotten by Joe Palley 7-2 and Doug Whaley 7-3 to reach him. Ansari and Dominguez faced each other in the quarterfinals, after surviving double hill matches versus McCaffrey and Sambojon. Dominguez then dropped Ansari into fourth place 7-3 and moved on to meet and defeat Alpajora 7-5 in the semifinals. In the single race-to-9 finals that followed, Mistica avoided the final game decision that had marked his earlier matchup against Dominguez, and opened up a three-game lead that gave him a 9-6 win and the first place prize.

Ansari was once again the highest finishing B/C player, barely edging out McCaffrey. His performance advances him to the Pro/A bracket. After-hours action saw Oscar Dominguez match up vs. Amar Kang in a race to 21 for $1,000. After a 3 year layoff from competitive pool Amar wasted no time getting back into the fray. He was able to hang with Oscar for the first 6 games -- they battled safety for safety, kick for kick but Oscar’s game was just too tough. Oscar took a commanding lead 20 to 5 but Amar showed his heart and battled back to 12 before Oscar took the prize. West Coast Gurus provided the live streaming broadcast of the action all weekend and will do so at all Northern California stops. Magic Rack has joined the CPPT and is providing racks for use at all future Tour stops. Two tournaments are coming up next month: August 21-22 at Danny K’s Billiards & Sports Bar in Orange (http://www.dannyks.com/) and August 14-15 at Surf City Billiards & Café in Santa Cruz (http://www.surfcitybilliards.com/). The West Coast Women's Regional 9-Ball Tour (WCWRT) kicked off its second season on July 10-11 at Hard Times Billiards in Sacramento, CA. Playing in Hard Times' cool, spacious tournament room with its freshly recovered Gold Crowns was a real treat. Owner Karen Markulis not only welcomed us warmly to her room--she joined right in the fun, playing in both the main event and second chance

tournaments! Twenty-nine players from Washington, Oregon and California started the day Saturday and 24 returned Sunday, either as one of the eight remaining players in the main event or as one of the 16 players entering the second chance event. In the main event, Eleanor Callado defeated both of the powerhouse Rakin sisters, Michelle (7-1) and Mary (7-2), to get to the hot seat. The Venus and Serena of the WCWRT then battled each other for the right to take El on again. Mary got an early lead 4-1 but, to no one's surprise, Michelle brought the match to hill-hill before Mary prevailed in the case game. Back at the table for the finals, Eleanor and Mary engaged in a seesaw contest that also

went to hill-hill. Mary took the game, but the tournament being true double elimination, the two players faced off again. The turning point came in the ninth game of the second set when Eleanor made a one/nine combination to go up 5-4. When she got to the nine in the next game she spent a long time lining up her shot, but after sinking that she visibly relaxed, running the table with smooth efficiency in the last game to take the final (6-7, 7-4). During presentation of the commemorative vases and prize money, an exciting announcement was made. An anonymous donor, who loves pool and loves to support the game by adding money to tournaments at Hard Times, added an extra $500 to the prize money for the top four places. That, along with the sponsorship money of Hard Times and Capitol Billiards (a Sacramento retailer of billiard equipment and supplies), made the main event at WCWRT's first stop a $1,000 added! Thank you all!! The winning players were, of course, all extremely grateful. The extra cash will help winner Eleanor Callado, a WPBA rookie, with her expenses as she travels to Norman, Oklahoma to play in the US Open, where fellow tour member Kim Benson will also compete. Twenty-Seven ladies representing Alberta, Washington, Colorado, and Oregon came to play on July 17-18th, 2010 at Stixx & Stones Billiards in Bremerton, Washington. The weekend’s typically festive atmosphere was overshadowed by the loss of a dear friend and fellow player, Martha Hartsell, who succumbed to cancer the previous week. In her memory, the NWPA will be hosting a Memorial Event every year starting in 2011 at The Cue Ball in Salem, Oregon. Please contact the NWPA if you are interested in contributing or participating. Martha will be sorely missed. New players to the tour included Tania Barnhart from Nespelem, WA, Sandra Badger from Edmonton, Alberta, and Jodi Lavan also from Edmonton. The NWPA would like to extend a warm welcome to these ladies along with all of the returning players to the first stop hosted at Stixx & Stones Billiards. Located at 2817 Wheaton Way in Bremerton, Washington Stixx & Stones Billiards is a family owned and operated all ages pool room that houses 13 9-foot Brunswick Gold Crown III, one 8-foot Valley Barbox, and one Brunswick Billiards table (3 cushion). Weekly tournaments include Wednesday night 8-ball and Sunday night 9-ball, $5 entry with a $3 green fee. Hours of operation are 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. on weekdays and 12 p.m. to 2 a.m. on weekends. Tuesdays are Ladies Night with free table time, and Thursdays are College Night with assorted food and drink specials along with discounted table rates. Just bring your school ID and play the night away. Along with family fun atmosphere, Stixx & Stones offers a unique treat, Deep Fried Oreos. People from all over have traveled to come and try out the tasty snack. Tournament play started Saturday morning with 27 ladies competing for the $500 added prize fund. Of those 27, only 8 returned on Sunday morning with a shot at the title. On the winner’s side Jana Montour vs. Shelby Locati and Sandra Badger vs. Kimberly Kirk, on the loser’s side Mary Hopkin vs. June Maiers and Cindy Sliva vs. Jackie Karol. Jana and Kimberly would advance through their morning matches 7-1 and 7-5 to play for the hot seat which Jana won 7-3 to sit on the point. June and Jackie both advanced through their morning matches 7-2 and 7-3 only to have their hopes of advancing ended by Sandra and Shelby 7-4 and 7-5 respectively. Sandra and Shelby then squared off for a hill-hill nail biter which Sandra won to earn a rematch against her morning match Kimberly Kirk. Sandra was ready for action the second time around and defeated

Kimberly 7-2 to earn her first final appearance in a NWPA event, great showing for her first visit to the tour. The lady of the day, however; was not to be denied. Jana Montour stomped through the brackets losing no more than 3 games on her path to the final which included wins over Adrianne B. (1), Mikki S. (1), Mary H. (3), Shelby L. (1), and Kimberly K. (3). Sitting on the point, I had a chance

to visit with Jana and she was calm and focused as she waited to find out who her opponent would be. Ironically, it would end up being someone that made the 14 hour drive with her from Alberta. Sandra Badgers’ path to the final included wins over Anne B. (3), Andreas S. (2), Jackie K. (4), loss to Kimberly K. (5), June M. (4), Shelby L. (6), and Kimberly K. (2). The final match was close initially as some uncharacteristic errors by Jana provided Sandra with some early opportunities that she took advantage of. Jana and Sandy exchanged racks through 3-3, then some missed chances allowed Jana to take the lead at 6-3. Back in forth misses in rack 10, left Sandy with a 3 ball runout to bring the match within 2 games. Unfortunately for Sandra, that would be her last 9-ball as

Jana would capitalize on every opportunity afforded in the next 3 racks to close out the match 9-4 to win her second stop of 2010 and assume leadership in Tour Point Standings. Congratulations to Jana and good luck to her at the end of this month as she will be representing the NWPA at the WPBA’s US Open in Norman, Oklahoma. 10 ladies came back on Sunday to participate in a $100 added Second Chance Tournament. The tourney was a true double elimination format, race to 3 both sides. Andrea Saenz-Maes earned top prize by going undefeated for the day. The NWPA’s 5th tour stop will be hosted at The Parlor in Bellevue, Washington on August 14-15, 2010 and Live Streaming will be broadcasted all weekend again. If you really want to improve, you have to play better players. This is the standard advice that has always been given out by the better players over the years. There is wisdom in this given advice, but it may not always be advisable to accept the advice as given. You see, many times these “better” players are only wanting you to play them − for money. It’s called gambling. And of course, they intend to win your money in this “gamble.”

In gamblers’ minds, it is a fair deal for them to take easy money from you because they see it as you paying for lessons; and they see it as them performing a (billiard) community service. They feel they are helping you to become a better player. Their rationale is, “That’s the way I did it; and that’s the way you will have to do it, too.” But wait, that’s not entirely true. As a matter of fact, it’s not even remotely true. Yes, everyone needs to play better players all throughout their playing years (that is, unless they are happy with their games staying right where they are at); but there are other ways to find stronger competition other than walking into a pool room and shouting, “Anybody here wanna play for some M-O-N-E-Y?” One of these ways is to play in tournaments. This really isn’t the best way, however, since it is very rare for tournament players to help each other through the sharing of information. They enter tournaments to help themselves; and they don’t want to help someone who might beat them in the future. So what is the best way? Well, this may be just my opinion, but I think the quickest way to improve is to play in leagues. Leagues are generally different from tournaments in that leagues are almost always made up of teams, and players on teams have to help each other improve in order for their team to improve. League players act like family. They coach each other, and they encourage each other. They also spend time practicing with each other. The APA recently started a new masters division in the pool room where I play. This division differs from traditional leagues in several ways – ways that will benefit those players who really want to break into the realm of high caliber play without having to pay the high prices attached to gambling and tournaments. The format for this new division calls for three-player teams, with each player on each team playing one member of the opposing team a race to 7 wins in a combined set of 8-ball and 9-ball. Another way this league differs is that there are no handicaps involved; and still another, is that there are no skill limits other than you cannot be a current touring pro. So if you’re one of those who would like to “get over the hump,” you might want to talk to your local APA league operator and see if there is a masters division you can play in.

Question:“Is it possible to hold the cue too loosely and does the grip pressure change at all through the stroke? I know the natural tendency is to tighten up on forward stroke/impact, but should I concentrate on avoiding that?

Answer:Holding your cue the correct way is an important caliber to your mechanics. Below are some photos to help you visualize what you should/should not do. When it comes to your grip, the best way that I can describe it is; its as if your holding on to a bird you don’t want to let him go but at the same time you don’t want to kill the poor thing.If you hold on to your cue with a tight grip as if it’s a bat then your stroke will be limited to the back and forth motion. If your grip is too soft then your follow through will not be secure enough. Cradle your cue in your hand lightly around all of your fingers. DO not include your palm otherwise your grip will become too tight.Remember to keep your wrist straight up/down without having a crease as shown in the second photo.Also, most important keep your thumb around your cue not on top of your cue.

We've all been in positions where it was almost impossible to reach the shot. Usually we should use the mechanical bridge for those shots, but most players would rather invent new techniques than use the rake. Here are a few novel techniques for shooting those tough-to-get-to shots. The Blind Shot. Suppose the object ball is very near the middle of the end rail and the cue ball is straight out from it. You want to come off the side of the ball and take the cue ball up the table for a safe. Sight while standing at the other end of the table, and place the cue stick on the table along the line of the shot. Move to the side of the table, reach out over the table and pick up the cue stick being very careful not to move the butt sideways, and form a normal bridge. Now shoot "side-arm." I first saw this technique used by the great carom champion Raymond Ceulemans. Under some rule sets, you have to be careful to not let go completely of the stick while it is on the table as that would be a foul. This technique is plenty accurate enough for some combinations out of rack. The Belly Stab. Same position, but you just need to hit the ball to the cushion for a safety. If the cue ball is close to the object ball, this is a very hard shot to get the right speed with a bridge if your depth perception is not perfect. Stand by the object ball, lay your stick out on the table pointed back at you, grab the shaft with both hands, and drag the stick towards you into the cue ball. Not pretty, but pretty effective. This is usually considered a legal shot. The Light Lift. Same position, but the object ball is very close to the cushion and the cue ball is close to the object ball. You want to just bump the object ball to the cushion and leave the same shot or worse. Lay your stick on the table as in the Belly Stab, but bring the tip under the edge of the cue ball. Pull the shaft straight up, grazing the edge of the cue ball which will very softly nudge the object ball to the cushion. Unfortunately, this stroke technique is illegal according to the World Standardised Rules as it is not made by a forward motion of the stick. The Cross-Town Bridge. Same position but move the cue ball a foot away from the object ball and put a cluster of balls just a little further out to prevent the Blind Shot technique. The orthodox way to handle this shot is by stacking mechanical bridges, but it's often hard enough to find a single bridge, let alone two or three. And shooting from the far end of the table is begging to move a ball or two due to low visibility. Place the mechanical bridge across the width of the table with head up on one side cushion and the handle on the other. Now you have a place in the air to rest your bridge hand. You may need to use the Blind Shot technique for aiming. I think this use of the bridge while not perfectly standard is still legal. The Briesath Bump. Here is a technique I saw demonstrated by Jerry Briesath, a master instructor from Wisconsin. Let's suppose you have both object ball and cue ball along the side rail and you need to draw the cue ball back to the other end of the table. The shot would be easy except for the fact that it's on the wrong side of the table, and you can't shoot at all off-handed. Jerry makes this shot by placing his stick on the table along the correct line, pinching under the stick with his bridge hand at about the joint to raise the tip up just a little, and jamming the heel of his hand into the bumper to drive the stick into the ball. The cue ball zips back -- darndest thing you ever saw. It's also food for thought for those who believe a special stroke is needed for draw. for a better season this year? Enjoy this easy checklist and have a fun pool season!

Set a GoalOne great thing about league is that someone else is keeping the stats for you. Now would be an ideal time to set some tangible, measurable goals. Maybe you’d like to move up by one handicap. Maybe you want a higher win percentage. Whatever your objective is, keep your eye on the target and have a plan of attack.Kids come home with progress reports that show their development. These stats may indicate their areas for improvement.

Granted, the league stats won’t identify the shots you miss most often or how many times you broke dry, but most will show ERO’s (Earned Run-Outs) and win-loss percentages. Use these stats to track your progress throughout the league season.

Keep it SimpleChoose one new shot or exercise to focus on. This should be something that allows you to target a specific weakness in your game. Perhaps you’re struggling with safeties or you have a phobia of inside english. If you have trouble identifying your weaknesses, ask a teammate for help. Try to dedicate at least 10 hours to each new drill before moving to the next one. Track your progress as you go along. Continuing EducationPick up a book, watch some videos, surf the internet, or simply read through the rest of this publication. There are so many great resources out there to help you get started. Many of them won’t even cost you a dime! If you need to be pointed in the right direction, let me know.

Review and RepeatNow remember, even though you’re using the league stats, your goals should be performance based and not outcome based. When you do your best and work to improve your weaknesses, the results will follow. If all your opponents break and run out on you in league, the outcome was negative but that was not a reflection of your performance.Take some time to review your stats from previous seasons and periodically check on your standings in the current season. The Annual ‘B’ Players tournament was held Saturday July 17th this year. Hard Times Billiards hosted the event and added $500 to the $20 entry fee for the regular Wednesday night B tournament. For those who were already tired or the great Oregon sunshine came out to play July 10th at Rodders Grub and Pub. Although the field was not as large as expected it was packed full of great players, Eddie Mataya, Don Wirtaman, Mike Stevens, and Paul Marquez to name a few. Many of these players drove more than 100 miles to compete. And let’s here it for the women, many of them showed up to play including one of the Northwest best in Cindy Sliva. Samm wins the next, and they are tied 2-2. Samm breaks, makes a ball and runs to the 9-ball, misses and leaves a tough shot for Susan. Susan banks it into the side pocket. Score: 3-2 Susan. Susan breaks, makes a ball and after some defensive play from both players, Susan makes a great carom on the 9-ball. Score is 4-2, Susan. Samm breaks, and more safety play from both players, but Samm wins this one. Score 4-3 Susan. Susan wins the next game. The score is now 5-3 Susan.Samm gets on a roll and wins the next 5 games, gets to the hill first and takes the lead 8-5. After a few exchanges and some safety play, Samm comes out on top and wins the match! Congratulations to both Samm and Susan finishing 1st and 2nd respectively. The WPBA held their U. S. Open event July 28-August 1, 2010 at the Riverwind Casino in Norman, Oklahoma. There was no streaming of the early rounds but the TV filming started on Saturday at 1pm with the Quarter Finals. 16 players were brought back for the redraw, single elimination rounds, race to 7. The final 16 were Jasmin Ouchan, Morgan Steinman, Vivian Villarreal, Melissa Little, Kelly Fisher, Kim Shaw, Iris Ranola, Karen Corr, Xiaoting Pan, Julie Kelly, Allison Fisher, Kyoko Sone, Dawn Hopkins, Gerda Hofstatter, Ga Young Kim and Monica Webb.

The finals pitted Ga Young Kim and Karen Corr. This was the fourth time they have met in the finals of the U. S. Open and Ga Young has won 3 of the 4 times, 2004, 2009 and now in 2010. Ga Young started out winning the lag but Karen won the first game. Ga Young then went on to win the next 3 games with an amazing 2-9 combination to win game 3. Karen then won the next two games - tie 3-3.

Ga Young in game 7 has a break and run and continues on by winning the next 2 games and making the hill first. Karen wins the next 3 games with a break and run in game 12 to bring the match to a hill-hill tie.

Game 13 is Ga Youngs break. She makes 2 balls and runs the 1 and 3, makes a tough 4 going the length of the table, runs 5 through 8 but leaves a tough cut on the 9. The win is in hand, she thin cuts the 9 in for the 2010 U. S. Open Title!

The fans were treated to some great safety play from both Ga Young and Karen throughout the finals. Ga Young wowwed the crowd with her excellent jumping ability by making 80% of the jump shots that she attempted in the finals.

BROOMFIELD, Colo., July 27, 2010 — Francisco Bustamante, one of the most accomplished players to come out of the Philippines, has been elected for induction into the Billiard Congress of America Hall of Fame in voting conducted by the United States Billiard Media Association. Also, in the Meritorious Service, Terry Bell and Larry Hubbart, founders of the American Poolplayers Association league system in 1979, were elected for induction. Bustamante, 46; Bell, 66; and Hubbart, 69, will be formally inducted into the BCA Hall of Fame on Oct. 21 during ceremonies in conjunction with the U.S. Open 9-Ball Championship in Chesapeake, Va. Bustamante, nicknamed “Django” because of a resemblance to the lead character in a Western film of the same name, was born in the Philippine province of Tarlac. He began playing pocket billiards at 10-years-old, and began competing in the United States in the early 1990s. He hit his stride in the United States in 1997, winning two Camel Pro Billiard Tour events. He was named Billiards Digest’s and Pool & Billiard Magazine’s Player of the Year in 1998 after notching four major tournament wins, and he earned Billiards Digest’s and Inside Pool’s Player of the Year titles again in 2002, winning five major events in the U.S. and abroad, and finishing second at the World Pool Championship. Bustamante finally garnered his first recognized world title in 2010, winning the WPA World 9-Ball Championship in Doha, Qatar. His strongest game is 9-ball, where his blockbuster break is legendary; although he is more than proficient at all the major games, as witnessed by his All-Around title at the 2008 Derby City Classic. Upon hearing the news that he would be the second Filipino in the BCA Hall of Fame (after Efren Reyes’ 2003 induction), Bustamante was completely shocked. “Really? I’m still young!” Bustamante said. “Two things that I always dreamed of were to be world champion and to be in the Hall of Fame. This year both dreams came true. We all dream to be in the BCA Hall of Fame, so I am very happy today. We are heroes in the Philippines, but for the American people to recognize me like this makes me very proud.” Longtime road players and accomplished professionals, Bell and Hubbart decided to reach out to the grassroots players in 1979 through an amateur pool league they called the American Poolplayers Association (APA). Nationwide league systems like the BCA National 8-Ball leagues and Valley National Eight-

Ball Association were just getting started as well, but Bell and Hubbart opted to go in another direction. They developed a handicapping system to allow players of all skill levels to compete against each other. With the handicapping system in place, they began franchising their concept. Bell and Hubbart spent several years pouring all of their time and resources into developing the APA and its franchise system. With the support of sponsorship from Busch beer as a title sponsor beginning in 1981, the APA grew from 1,000 to 100,000 members over the next decade. Their ability to garner such non-endemic national sponsorship allowed the APA to grow into a league that today has more than a 250 thousand players and 270 franchisees. As a matter of fact, the APA was listed earlier this year as one of Entrepreneur Magazine’s “10 Great Franchises For Less Than $20,000.” “We were outcasts for a long time because we were looked at as competition,” Bell said. “But Larry and I just tried to build a business and do something worthwhile. We’ve always felt like we’ve done things that have helped the industry.” Voting was conducted by the USBMA Hall of Fame Board, which consists of USBMA members, elected At-Large members and living members of the BCA Hall of Fame. Induction is awarded to the player named on the most ballots. A second player is elected if he or she is named on more than 70 percent of the ballots. Bustamante (56 percent) was the leading vote getter, edging out familiar foe Ralf Souquet (46 percent) and fellow Filipino Jose Parica (44 percent). No other players were named on more than a quarter of submitted ballots. According to BCA Hall of Fame voting rules, this was the last year of eligibility for Parica and Jim Mataya in the Greatest Players category. Both individuals will be past the age of 60 in 2011, which means the Veterans Committee will consider them for possible induction in future years. To be eligible for consideration in the Greatest Player category, a player a) must be 40 years old by Jan. 1 of the year of their induction; b) must have a professional playing career of at least 10 years; and c) must have recorded significant achievements in U.S.-based events. Hubbart and Bell were placed on the general election ballot after the USBMA’s Board’s 10-member Meritorious Service Committee named them as its official nominee. Thirty-one of 39 board members voted to approve Hubbart and Bell, with a simple majority required for induction.

He defeated Kuo Po-cheng of Taiwan today 13-7 at the World Pool Championships in Doha, Qatar to finally be known no longer as the finest player not to have won a World Title.

To truly appreciate the significance of this feat you must go back to 2002 when Bustmante also played in the finals of the WPC against Earl Strickland. The evening prior to the final match word came from Manila that Bustamante’s daughter had taken ill and died. Bustamante, crushed, was told that he need not play the final, that all would understand. He considered this, but his wife somehow reached him and convinced him that their child would have wanted him to continue the fight.

And he did. In one of the bravest moments that our game has ever witnessed Bustamante took the stage while the crowd around him wept. Word had spread through the morning and the sight of this man continuing the battle after the hand that fate had dealt him was simply stunning.

He lost to Strickland that day, but won the hearts of every pool fan in the world. And since that moment we have been waiting, with him, for this. Today he defeated Antonio Lining 11-5 to re-enter the Final Arena and then put away Kuo Po-cheng, the man who has been in the quarter, semi, or final match of a WPC more times than any other player without a win.

Kornerpocket Billiardz held our first annual 3 person team open 9 ball tournament on July 31st. What was planned for a 2 day event finished on the same day at around 11:30 pm. With a very strong field the competition was phenomenal. A total of 10 teams turned out for the tourny, playing for a pot worth $1,000.00! Not to mention the additional $390 for the Calcutta. With a race to 9 on the A side and a race to 7 on B side it was sure to be a great day. The finals were a race to 11. The house fired up the grill out back and made a burger plate lunch the special of the day! They played Those Dam Boyz, a group from the Coulee Dam area- Wayne Boyd, Carry Brauer and Lyle Redthunder who gave them a bit of a scare. Going Hill- Hill, Wayne Boyd effortlessy runs the rack down to the 9 with a near impossible shot, he kicks it out to give Dan Louie the hardest cut possible. Of course Mr. Louie with all eyes watching made the shot sending Those Dam Boyz in to losers bracket, which brought them up against our own Kornerpocket Billiardz. Now playing to clinch the 2nd place spot, another nail biting hill-hill match it came down to Lyle Redthunder and Miguel Morfin for the final game. Lyle had the out and was taking it, until he missed the 6 ball giving Miguel a very difficult decision. Miguel cut for the corner pocket it was near perfect but left hanging!! Lyle steps back to the table, and takes the match moving Those Dam Boyz back to the point to play Malarkys again for the cheese! With a hand full of spectators left watching the final match the heat was on! Dan Louie came out with the first win giving the team a great start. Malarkys gave a good fight but in the end Those Dam Boyz took 1st with

a final score of 11-5. There is a time to compete and give it your best on an event; and there is a time to take a minute to recognize those women from our DVPL, that have taken their game, one more notch above the average player. It takes commitment, discipline and the simple desire to want to be the best, to

control the cue ball, to run racks and take the winning game for your team. Two of our veterans, ‘graduated’ this year and one became a master player at the BCA while the other one took 1st of the Senior category at ACS national tournaments in las Vegas, this past may.They are Darla Decker and Shawn Modelo.

Darla Decker played strong and is now a Master Player by placing third this past May in the Senior Category of BCA ($1200). She is very excited about her placement but very humble about the reality of the upcoming competition with her new title. Darla practices 30 minutes daily, reads books about pool, but admits that isn’t enough to compete at a Master level at BCA Nationals. She is hoping to compete at ACS next year to experience a smaller tournament format.She was first introduced to pool by a friend in 2002 who she thanks greatly. She was invited to join DVPL in 2003 by a league member and has been with that team since. It is on that team that she learned a great deal about defense from the Captain Annette Wood. She has the motto of watch, listen, learn, and then practice.

Shawn Modelo began playing pool in 1995 and joined DVPL in 1998 and loves the competition and the overall love of the game that is shared in the women’s league. She credits her great skills to her father VJ (Pops) whom is also her scotch doubles partner and placed 3rd at ACS, and to her husband Jeff who gives her pointers and also encourages her to compete because she loves it.She drills a few times a week and shoots in league 3 times a week. She doesn’t practice daily but when she does it is for hours. She is the type of player that uses her drive for competition and the love of the game to carry her thru tough matches; which makes her a dangerous player to everyone.Shawn had a thrilling final match in the ACS Nationals to become the 2010 ACS Senior Champion ($1000 plus trophy). She performed superbly to come from the cat seat and to take the bird. She had to defeat her opponent in two races to four. She dominated the first match and the second match wasn’t so one sided. Shawn held strong when she was frustrated by a trapped eight ball which eventually led to a stale mate match. Her mental strength and her skill carried her thru. Shawn also placed on the BCA Nationals taking 17th -24rth place for $175


On July 10th, while Shane Van Boening was winning his way to the top of the Gem City Classic at the Marietta Billiard Club in Marietta, GA, several of the finest cue and case makers, as well as some high end collectibles and fine collections were being displayed in the Scorpion Room, where the Southern Cue & Case Show was taking place.

The big event of the day was the induction of Leonard Bludworth into the International Cuemakers Hall of Fame, which was streamed live to the world. In the 1970’s, Leonard began repairing cues and he started building them in the 1980’s. Over the years, he developed and sold the Bludworth

Ball Cleaner, as well as wood lathes he had converted into reliable cue repair machines and many other mechanical and CNC machines for cue building. Leonard was also a master pool table mechanic and equipment coordinator for the men’s pro tour and the senior tour for many years. He was probably the first cuemaker to ever sell a cue for $100,000. In 1992,

he founded the American Cuemakers Association. Leonard practically created the role of cue repairman and the traveling pro shop. In honor of all he has done for cue sports over the years, he has truly earned this prestigious position. Congratulations, Leonard Bludworth!

Martha was the fiercest competitor I’ve ever known. She was almost predatory in her attack on the pool table. No matter what horrible position she was in on the table, she would think of a way out. Sometimes I’d see what she was going to do and think she was crazy to try it. Then she would pull it off and go smoothly on to the next shot.

When the battle on the table was over she was always gracious, win or lose. She had a great respect for her fellow competitors. Away from the table she had a wonderful sense of humor. Her laughter rang loud and long and often late into the night. I can’t believe she’s gone. - - - Andrena Browne

I don’t even know if Martha realized how much she meant to me. 10 years ago I was honored to join Martha and the Noti Heartbreakers. They were not only a great team of players but they are also good people and great friends. Through Martha’s actions I learned how to be the pool player I am today. She taught me to be a fierce competitor yet have fun at this GAME we all love. Martha always made time to talk but got down to business when needed. To this day I remember the first time I beat her in a tournament! We both played so slow and strategic. Neither wanting

I first remember watching her play in 96 or 97. Wow, I was in awe. Her focus, her determination, her strength, her disciplined style. I remember saying to myself, “where the hell did she come from”? Well turns out this great player hailed from the eugene oregon area, and her name was Martha Hartsell. From that time on, I had the honor of sharing a table with this very talented lady. Everytime I played her, I learned something new. She helped me become a better player by raising the bar in womens pool in the Pacific NW. And she helped me become a better person in showing by example with her class and graciousness. The honor of being her peer and friend is something I will cherish forever. There will never be another player like Martha. She was a one of a kind talent in the Pacific NW.I will alway miss you my friend, - - - Love you, Andrea Saenz Maes

Martha was no exception and her accomplishments have been chronicled on this page by some of the photos that we have in our archives. I was always impressed with Martha’s style and class. I had the opportunity to watch Martha at

CueSports International (CSI) announced last month the expansion of the BCA Pool League national singles player rating criteria to include an Advanced Division. A natural extension of that update is an additional restructuring of the teams and scotch doubles criteria. After much consideration and consultation with BCA Pool League Operators CSI has made the following changes effective with the 35th BCAPL National 8-Ball Championships May 13-21, 2011 at the Riviera Hotel & Casino. Mixed Open Teams (5 person teams / 10 players max on roster)1 - No Masters or Grand Masters.2 - One (1) Advanced Player is allowed on a Mixed

Open Team.3 - Teams must have at least three (3) original

players from their local league team.4 - Three original players must play in each round.5 - All players must come from the same league.

Mixed Advanced Teams (4 person teams / 8 players max on roster)1 - No Grand Masters.2 - Only one (1) Master on the roster.3 - Remainder of roster made up of Open and

Advanced Players.4 - Teams must have at least two (2) original

players from their local league team.5 - Two (2) original players must play in each

round.6 - Additional players may come from any BCAPL
