Members, Welcome to the September issue of “The Branch”. The Sub-Branch has been reasonably quiet of late except for Commemorations for Rimau on the 7

th July and VP day on the15

th

August. On the 10-11

th August, Kevin Collins, Tracy Gillespie, Paul Bloomfield

and myself attended a Corporate Governance Seminar in Maryborough. The main item that came out of it is that your Sub-Branch is ticking all the boxes in relation to Governance. On the 17

th August I attended the 100

th Anniversary celebration of the

Murgon Sub-Branch which was a great evening and well attended. Remembrance Day is nearly upon us again and hasn’t this year gone quick? It is with sadness that our Sub-Branch Padre has had to resign his position with us due to health problems. Vic Burgess has been a stalwart for the Sub-Branch with his support for Commemorations and funeral services, also making himself available to talk to ex-service members who were in unhealthy situations. We wish Vic and his wife all the best for the future and hope to see them around the RSL Club at some stage. The Pension and Wellbeing sections are busy as usual with the attendance rate at about 17-20% higher than previous figures. We are now having State employed Pension Advocates attending on Tuesdays to assist with clients as we are still down on volunteer Pension Officers. Until next edition, take care.

Brian Tidyman President.

The Bell UH-1 Iroquois (nicknamed "Huey") is a utility military helicopter powered by a single turboshaft engine, with two-blade main and tail rotors. The first member of the prolific Huey family, it was developed by Bell Helicopter to meet a United States Army's 1952 requirement for a medical evacuation and utility helicopter, and first flew in 1956. The UH-1 was the first turbine-powered helicopter produced for the United States military, and more than 16,000 have been built since 1960. The Iroquois was originally designated HU-1, hence the Huey nickname, which has remained in common use, despite the official re-designation to UH-1 in 1962. The UH-1 first saw service in combat operations during the Vietnam War, with around 7,000 helicopters deployed. The Bell 204 and 205 are Iroquois versions developed for the civil market.

In February this year, Urangan State High School applied to the Hervey Bay RSL Sub-Branch Inc. for funds to update and refurbish their ANZAC Memorial located at the front of the school. The Sub-Branch Committee approved funding, under the Objects of the Returned & Services League of Australia (Queensland Branch), for the upgrade and you can see the results below. The works were carried out by Metcalfe Constructions. Thank you to USHS Business Manager, Kacey Hannant, for the photos.

On Sunday 7th

July the Hervey Bay RSL Sub-Branch held a commemorative service for the World War 2 Operation Rimau. It was held at the TS KRAIT memorial at Dayman Park in Urangan, Hervey Bay. The service was conducted by the Hervey Bay Sub-Branch President, Brian Tidyman, with a crowd of over seventy people. The catafalque party was presented by the TS KRAIT Cadets and Chaplain Jeffrey Jarvis led the prayers for the service. The names of all those who were members of the

“Operation Rimau” were read out and a bell rung

for each of them. The TS KRAIT memorial is a main

feature of Dayman Park and was erected in area

that overlooks the waters to Fraser Island where the

training took place for those who participated in

Operation Rimau.

The Naval Association of Australia Fraser Coast Sub Section

“Each for All-All for Each”

Postal Address: Fraser Coast Sub-section of N.A.A. c/-Hervey Bay RSL & Services Memorial Club Inc.

PO Box 3042, Pialba QLD 4655

The Fraser Coast Sub-Section continue to meet at the Hervey RSL Boardroom on the 2nd Sunday of the month (except January).

Application for membership is invited—please contact:

FRASER COAST Sub-Section

The Naval Association of Australia is committed to four important principals;

Care: (i.e. the welfare of our members), Commemoration, Camaraderie, and we assist our local naval Cadet units.

Care: We endeavour to visit any of our members/family who might be in hospital, or disadvantaged locally, and use our network to provide support to those who might be in hospital further afield. The Fraser Coast Sub-Section has now established a Wellbeing and Advocacy Service with a small team of accredited advocates. Our team supports the needs of former Naval personnel and their families with advice on access to services or assistance with DVA pension or compensation claims. If you want to know more about this service please contact our President Peter McDermott ( see details below).

Commemoration: The Fraser Coast Sub-Section continues to commemorate significant events in the history of the Royal Australian Navy. Recent events have included small ceremonies at Freedom Park. We are looking forward commemorating the Naval Association’s Centenary year in 1920.

How did it all begin? One evening in 1920, in the vicinity of Young and Jacksons Hotel on the corner of Flinders and Swanston Streets, Melbourne, an ex-navalman out for a stroll with his wife saw a former shipmate on point duty as a police officer. From this chance meeting they decided to get together again with as many old shipmates as possible.

This led to a "Smoko" in May 1920, in the old Manchester Unity Hall in Swanston Street, attended by about 100 ex-Navalmen who agreed to form the "Ex-Navalmen's Association'", which was inaugurated in November 1920.

Camaraderie: We hold several social events for our members and our social calendar can be found on our Subsection page on the Naval Association website of via this link. https://navalassoc.org.au/sub-sections/qld/fraser-coast

Cadets: TS Krait has negotiated a new location with the Hervey Bay TAFE to provide their cadet unit with a venue (on campus) for the immediate future. This will be a far better option than the requirement of the cadets having to use the Sub-branch bus to travel to Maryborough for training. The Sub-Section continues to offer support.

Membership

Membership of the Naval Association is open to former or serving naval personnel of Commonwealth

Forces and Australia’s Allies and the declared partners thereof. Former Australian Army and RAAF

personnel who have been posted to HMA Ships and Establishments are also eligible to join. We also have a

level of membership open to people who wish to support the association who do not meet the full

membership criteria.

Hello to all! In June we were fortunate to have our yearly Tombola morning which was a great success actually, our best so far! To all those who helped make this day - many thanks. July saw our bus trip to Bargara where we visited the Lavender Farm and also two strawberry farms, not the one we were looking for but never the less all had a wonderful day’s outing. In September we are hoping to visit the Vintners Secret Winery so we are looking forward to this day. On Tuesday 13th August our Auxiliary had the great honour in celebrating our 90th year of service. Our monthly meeting was followed by a High Tea on “The Deck” at the RSL Club.

The company was great and the High Tea was marvellous. Thanks to Elaine and her staff, we really appreciated all your hard work. Our ladies will be helping with the sale of badges for Legacy Week. To these ladies we say thank you as all monies raised helps those who need help. In June our President, Trish Hummerston, was our representative at our conference held in Brisbane where some interesting information was presented.

This year has come and gone so fast we shall soon be making preparations for our Christmas Party. To the RSL Sub-Branch Committee we wish to say a huge THANK YOU for our Auxiliary shirts which we were given. They look really smart and we have had many wonderful compliments from the public on how uniformed they look. So once again, many thanks. To all, have a wonderful day. On Monday 1st July 2019 the Hervey Bay RSL Sub-Branch held a workshop for

the Hervey Bay RSL Sub-Branch wellbeing and support officers at the RSL Club.

Harry Ghitgos BHMS ACA, a qualified Alcohol & Drug Counsellor affiliated with the Hervey Bay Sub-Branch, invited Ross Remano from Cores Training to train our wellbeing officers in how to deal with clients who have suicide ideation.

Coping skills and strategies were presented along with taking the stigma away from being confronted with a situation involving suicide.

This workshop is part of the on-going training to keep our support officers on track to provide assistance to veterans and their families.

Always remember, the Hervey Bay RSL Sub-Branch is here to help veterans and their

families.

Legacy has existed for 95 years, caring for the families of deceased

veterans. We, at Hervey Bay Legacy Group, need to increase our

volunteer body to serve our 340 beneficiaries, who are the widows

and children of deceased veterans. Would you, or someone you

know, consider joining us as a legatee? Interested? Need more

information? Contact Barry on 0481 276 402
