Whether you attended, made cakes, donated prizes for the raffle or bought and sold at the bring and buy table or all of these things. The total raised was £327, which is a wonderful achievement and it’s all down to the folk of Great Bradley and their friends and families, so very many thanks again. Once the Gift Aid has been recovered from this amount then the total for Macmillan will be even higher! Helen and Pete Smith

Beginners’ Computer CourseBeginners’ Computer CourseBeginners’ Computer CourseBeginners’ Computer Course in Great Bradley Village Hall

Following the article last month we now have further information. The first course will consist of six weekly 2 hour sessions running on Thursdays from 4 October. This course was initially oversubscribed so it has been decided to give the option of either morning 9.45 - 1145am or afternoon 1.15 - 3.15pm sessions (afternoon course not Thurs 11th October). There may be a break for half-term if the course participants wish it. The cost of the course will be just £10 for the 6 sessions as we have been given grant money for this from Awards for All. As we go to press there is one available place on the morning course and 3 remaining in the afternoon. Laptops are provided for everyone on this basic course and there is an internet connection at the Village Hall which everyone will be using. The course will cover the following topics:

• What is a computer?

• What is a PC?

• What is Hardware and Software?

• Finding your way around the keyboard.

• How to Use a Mouse.

• Useful Shortcuts.

• Setting up User Accounts and customising your desktop

• Organising your files and understanding folder and file structures.

• Basic Email – setting up an email account; using Microsoft Outlook/Live Mail; Safety Tips.

• Basic Internet – Shopping; Security; Seeking Information, etc.

There will be 2 more courses to follow this one in the Winter and Spring which could be more advanced and/or concentrate more on specific subjects and as we said before we would welcome any feedback on content for these courses. If you think you might be interested in the next courses then early advice to reserve a place could be sensible. Contact John Barnett E: [email protected] T: 01440 783903

MEET YOUR MP Matthew HanMEET YOUR MP Matthew HanMEET YOUR MP Matthew HanMEET YOUR MP Matthew Hancock cock cock cock ---- Friday 9 November 6.30 Friday 9 November 6.30 Friday 9 November 6.30 Friday 9 November 6.30----8.30pm Village Hall8.30pm Village Hall8.30pm Village Hall8.30pm Village Hall

This event is open to all residents to come along and meet Matthew. He will give a short talk and is happy to answer questions on both national and local issues. Please note though that the evening is not an advice surgery so Matthew will not be able to deal with detailed problems residents may have. For personal issues residents should email or write to Matthew at the House of Commons or contact his constituency caseworker, Christopher Morris on 01638 578654.

Matthew writes: I was pleased to see that Great Bradley has got in the spirit of the inspiring summer of sport that we have had this year. I noticed that someone even went so far as to change the village sign to commemorate one of our sporting heroes who shares the village’s name. I am looking forward to coming back to Great Bradley this November for a ‘Meet your MP’ session. I always enjoy getting out of Westminster, meeting people and hearing their concerns. It is very important to me that I understand the issues, both local and national, that are affecting my constituents. I hope that I will have the opportunity to meet many of you on 9

th November, from 6.30 to 8.30pm at the Village Hall.

When I speak to constituents one of the concerns they often raise is unemployment. We are very lucky that in West Suffolk we have relatively low levels of unemployment and that they are coming down faster than across the country as a whole. However we cannot be complacent, particularly in the case of the young. So I am holding a Jobs Fairs in Haverhill on 23

rd November. If you, or anyone you know, are having difficulty

looking for a job, then I would encourage them to come along. More details can be found on my website at: www.matthewhancock.co.uk

1st Burrough Green Brownies 1st Burrough Green Brownies 1st Burrough Green Brownies 1st Burrough Green Brownies It seems so long ago now, but the Brownies enjoyed a really busy summer term: Burrough Green Fete on Sunday 17

th June – 8 Brownies and 4 leaders from our unit helped with the ‘human

fruit machine’ and served tea & coffee to stall holders, along with clearing tea cups and plates from tables. The girls thoroughly enjoyed helping and the fete committee & stall holders really appreciated all the help given from the 6 units from Girlguiding and Scouting. We were delighted to receive a donation from the Burrough Green PCC as thank you for our help. We made the most of some good weather evenings and headed outside. The girls once again this year requested what is becoming a favourite summer term outside activity, ‘MESSY NIGHT’. This year we added an ‘Olympic’ twist to the evening; there was a lot of mess & laughter! We have now said goodbye to five of our Brownies who are all moved on to Guides. Brownies, for girls aged 7 to 10, meet weekly in Brinkley during the school term. If anyone would like more information please contact Margaret Whalley 01638 716939.

Thurlow PreThurlow PreThurlow PreThurlow Pre----School and Holiday ClubSchool and Holiday ClubSchool and Holiday ClubSchool and Holiday Club Summer seemed to pass quickly and the Autumn term is already looking fun-packed and busy. We extend a big, warm welcome to the new children who have joined us this term. We are extremely pleased to have been awarded the ‘Inclusive Environment Award’ recently; we are one of only four settings in Suffolk to achieve this award! We take great pride in our ability to meet every child's needs, regardless of language barriers, different cultures, physical disabilities or learning difficulties.

During the October 2012 half term we will be running our first Holiday Club! This will be open to 2-7 year olds, from 8am until 3.30pm. You don’t have to be currently registered at Thurlow pre-school, or the primary school to join our Holiday Club, and anyone interested can contact us on 01440 783688 for further details. The days are priced very competitively and we hope to see lots of children there. Claire Addison Committee Secretary

A Message from the Bugle TeamA Message from the Bugle TeamA Message from the Bugle TeamA Message from the Bugle Team ---- Now it's YOUR turn! Now it's YOUR turn! Now it's YOUR turn! Now it's YOUR turn!

When we agreed to take on preparing the Bugle, way back in November 2006, we said we would do it for one year. Now, six years on, it is time for us to take a break.

We hope very much that someone (or a small group) will want to take over from us. It's an enjoyable job and there are regular contributors who provide much of the copy. There are no rules about style or content and the reproduction is done, very kindly, by our parish clerk John Barnett, on the shared copier. Sue has stuck with using Word for the layout but any of the current publishing software packages could be used if preferred.

The main tasks are: Collating material: most arrives by email Editing: checking spelling/grammar, shortening pieces if necessary Advertisers: occasional correspondence with advertisers, sending out annual invoices Lay out: Designing house style, Preparing copy ready for printing

If you might be prepared to help with any one (or more) of these tasks please let us know. The main thing is to get information to every house in the village on a regular basis - the addition of a few 'frills' and photos is appreciated by many readers, but isn't essential. There is also a lovely team of people who deliver the Bugle to everyone's door.

We will look after the November edition and make the December/January edition our last. We hope very much that by then a new editorial team will have emerged.

We're all prepared to offer help and backup during a takeover phase and to answer any questions. If you'd like to know more please ring or email us.

Les & Anne’s Nature NotesLes & Anne’s Nature NotesLes & Anne’s Nature NotesLes & Anne’s Nature Notes Owls Abroad and at Home Well, our annual trip to Yellowstone is over for another year and yet again we were enthralled and captivated by the wildlife. The weather helped of course, being in the mid 80's all the time! We were lucky this year to see Wolves most days with ten being the best count one morning, also for the first time we heard them howling ... a very unnerving sound when it was only 100 yards away! Bears were harder to spot and although we did see three grizzlies, even the locals said they had been very elusive all summer. A new mammal for us this year was a badger who very obligingly dug a hole while we watched. The highlight was our first ever encounter with an owl, He was so well camouflaged from the back that even from 10 yards away, I had no idea he was there, it wasn't until I made my way around the other side of the tree that I realised what I thought was a tree stump turned out to have two large yellow eyes! It was in fact a young Great Horned Owl, which was nearly two feet tall. Look at the photo and see just how big his talons are, they are among the most ferocious birds of prey in the U.S.A. Well, back to our owls, and in early September one of the young Barn Owls was still in the box and we saw him several times. The best news is that one of our female chicks from last year’s brood has taken up residence in Hawkeden, just 10 km east, and is breeding. We hope to bring you news of how many chicks she has raised in the next Bugle. On 12th September in the morning, Anne said our house was covered in House Martins, all over the roof and up the side wall, and they kept on showing up in very large numbers all week. Alas by the time you read this they will have flown south, still it won't be long before we start seeing Fieldfares and Redwings and who knows maybe some Waxwings again this year. Well, for now, Happy Spotting Les & Anne

FUTURE EDITIONS OF THE BUGLE: FUTURE EDITIONS OF THE BUGLE: FUTURE EDITIONS OF THE BUGLE: FUTURE EDITIONS OF THE BUGLE: Please tell us your news or send a photograph – We’ll be delighted to hear from you! In order that your Bugle reaches you early in the month all copy must be received in good time.

PARISH COUNCIL PARISH COUNCIL PARISH COUNCIL PARISH COUNCIL (cont’d)(cont’d)(cont’d)(cont’d)

Parish Councillor Vacancies There are seats for 7 on the Parish Council but we currently have only 5 councillors. So far no-one else has come forward who is willing to serve the village in this way. A shortage of councillors restricts the things we are able to do for the village and the ability of the council to operate effectively, and increases the load on the existing councillors. If there is any possibility that you might be willing to join the council, or if you know someone who might, please talk to Rowan Sylvester-Bradley (783157) or any of the existing councillors, or John Barnett (Clerk, 783903), to find out more. Of course, you are not committing yourself at this stage. Parish Council Auditor Legally the Parish Council has to have its accounts and accounting systems audited by an “internal auditor”, who is (strangely) a person independent of the council and its members, who checks the accounts for completeness and consistency once a year. Once the Internal Auditor has agreed the accounts, they are sent to an “external auditor” (a firm of accountants appointed by the government). Our internal auditor for the last few years has now retired, and we need someone else to do this. This person does not have to be a qualified accountant. They have to be competent (i.e. numerate, familiar with simple accounts, and have a good eye for detail). There is a modest payment available for doing this job. Ideally it should be someone from the local area. If you might be able to do this, or know someone who might do it, please contact John Barnett (783903). Village Bonfire and Fireworks Our Bonfire Night will take place this year in The Park (the field at the top of Hall Road behind the pink cottages) on Saturday 3 November. Book the date! An able and willing team of volunteers is busy organising a super evening for you, including bonfire, firework display, hot dogs, mulled wine and a bar with alcoholic and soft drinks. We will try to make sure the bonfire burns up more quickly this year. There will not be a make-a-guy competition on this occasion. This is a village event, taking place by kind permission of the Ryder family on their field. Everyone who lives in the parish is encouraged to come with your visitors, friends and neighbours, but this is not a “public” event, we don’t want rent-a-crowd from elsewhere to be here, so please don’t publicise this far and wide. The gates will open at 6.30pm and the firework display will start at 7.15. Entry is free, but there will be a collection. Fireworks are expensive and we need to cover the cost of the event, so please bring enough cash to contribute several pounds per visitor if it’s within your means. Please note that there is absolutely no parking on the site or nearby. Please come on foot. If you have elderly or disabled members of your party, please bring them by car and drop them off, then remove your vehicle. Also note that there will be no loos on the site. If you need the loo, please go home. To avoid turning the entrance to the field into a quagmire, no vehicles must be driven onto the field on the evening or in the weeks leading up to the event unless authorised by one of the firework team. There will be a collection of combustible (wood) garden rubbish on the three Saturdays 13, 20 and 27 October. There will be a large trailer on the recreation ground (near the Fox Green entrance) for the whole of these three Saturdays. Please have a clear-up and contribute your wooden rubbish to this, to help build the bonfire. Please do not add paper, cardboard, plastic, rubber, metal, glass or anything else that’s inappropriate to the trailer – it just causes lots of extra work and possibly danger to the volunteers building the bonfire. Look forward to seeing you at the Bonfire – and to hearing from would-be Councillors. Rowan Sylvester-Bradley (chairman, Parish Council) We understand that the election for the Police and Crime Commissioner for the area will take place at the Village Hall on Thursday 15th November. (Hopefully more information on this will have been received in time for next month’s edition. Ed.)
