The Boy at Sea
Maybe the first lines of a story on Kokila should be put like this: She was a young girl who went alone
to the shore at the Indian Bay of Bengal most every day and she had gone 4020 days now without
any derogation of her love for the sea. In spite of all attempts. In spite of all the whacking she got for
permanently violating her parents prohibitions. Kokila was in love with the sea. She worshipped the
sea. She talked to the sea. She wrote poems at the sea. And, of course, about the sea.
Yet, all of a sudden, her love turned into hate. That was not because her father struck her. The sea
itself struck. On Black Sunday, December 26th in the year of 2004 - Indias Hiroshima - the tsunami
washed everything away. It washed away the house in which Kokila had lived with her parents, her
sister, two brothers and grand-mother. The family could escape on a roof. But her grand-mother died
in the waves. That was Kokilas biggest loss. Her best friend died as well. That was the second biggest
loss. The third biggest loss was the loss of all the poems Kokila had written ever since the age of
eight. They would have filled a book.
Tommy and his parents are walking up to their room on the eighth floor of their cruise ship. There is a
ten oclock curfew for all kids on the boat, so Tommys parents are tucking him in for bed and then
heading back up to the main deck for a while longer.
Tommy pleas to his parents, Why cant I stay out with you guys? Ill be bored all alone.
His mom replies, Oh, honey, we wont be long, I promise. And you know the rules; kids have to be in
their rooms by ten.
They arrive to room 809 and use the key card to unlock the door. Tommys parents tuck him in and say
goodnight, making sure the door is locked as they leave. Tommy lies in bed dissatisfied with the way his
evening turned out. He decides he wants to go out for a walk.
Tommy ends up wandering around on one of the boats many decks. Out of nowhere, he hears a wave
crashing against the boat and falls over the ledge.
Tommy doesnt wake up until the next day. When he wakes, he realizes he isnt on the boat. Hes
floating on the back of a dolphin. Of course this startles him but he gathers he is safe.
Back on the boat his parents panic. Tommy is not in the room and nowhere to be found. His parentsreport him missing to all authorities on the boat and everyone is on the lookout for him.
Meanwhile, Tommy is still afloat. On either side of him, all he can see is water. No land, no boats.
Tommy cant stop thinking about what a genius the dolphin must be for saving him. The dolphin
continues to swim rather quickly with Tommy still on its back. Finally, in the horizon, Tommy can see
land.

A few hours pass by and still no one has seen Tommy. His parents begin to worry and think of all the
worst possibilities, of course.
Where do you think he could possibly be? Tommys mom asks his dad.
I have no idea, theres no way hes on this boat, though. He replies.
You dont think he She says.
Dont think he what? His dad asked.
You dontthink he could have fallen in, do you? His mom asks....
