Message from the Rabbi
Reb Simcha Bunim of Pshis’cha (1765-1827) is quoted as having said that when he was young, he thought he could change the world. As he got older, he saw that he could not change the entire world, but at least, he thought, he could change his city. As time went on, he saw that even that was beyond his grasp, but he said, “I’ll at least change my neighborhood.” When he saw that that was not working, he said, “I’ll at least try to change my family.” When he saw that that failed as well, he said, “I’ll have to try to change only myself.” But once he succeeded in changing himself, he saw that his family was different, his neighborhood was different, his city was different, and, in a sense, the entire world was different. During this, the most introspective time of the Jewish year, may each of us give ourselves permission to unplug from the news cycle, the horrific pandemic, the political fighting, racial tension, xenophobia, antisemitism, and take the time to do some personal and spiritual work to determine how we can bring our lives into harmony with our highest ideals. While this year brings us an unprecedented challenge of social distancing, isolation, worshiping from our home sanctuaries, I pray that we can and will, all find it in ourselves to be able to see the good that surrounds us as we remain safe for now. Yes, together as a community that may not be in the same building or sharing the same physical space, no matter where we are let us appreciate what actually have in front of us today as we look into our spiritual monitor. Zoom brings us together - We have each other still and that is good – it is exceptionally good. While it is never easy to turn our attention away from all of the challenges, the conflicts, the illnesses and strife that so vigorously demand our attention, it is my prayer that doing so will bring us the clarity and the strength that we will need to bring about the changes that are so desperately needed and can be achieved in the world around us as we bring in the New Year 5781. May the New Year be a sweet one, full of healing, good health, care for each other, an end to the pandemic, peace, and repair for all. Shanah Tovah Umetukah – (A Good and Sweet Year) Rabbi Richard Perlman
When I think of a memorial booklet, the first thought that comes to
mind is my family that have passed away; that I remember. The
names Anita and I put in the booklet are our relatives whom we
remember and whom we had relationships with. I had relatives who
passed when I was young and some whom I didn’t know very well,
and the only memories I have of them are flashes of faces, but no
relationships to remember. So my question to you folks is- will you
be a memory for someone as a “flash of a face”, or a memory of a
relationship? If we agree that we would like to be remembered for
our relationships, then the next question would be, how would we
like to be remembered? The question is a real one as we all have
the potential to make an impact on people (not just family), and we
should make an impact; a positive one. It can be done with words or
actions or both. As I mentioned last year, we will all pass one day
and perhaps our names will be in a yizcor booklet. Let’s be the
name that when read will cause people to pause and remember the
deeds of lovingkindness we did for family, friends and strangers.
May all our good deeds be recognized by God and may we be
blessed by Him for a happy, healthy, sweet New Year.
Shanah Tovah

Message from the Associate Rabbi
Message from the President Shalom, As we begin 5781 we all have so much to reflect on. The past year has brought the unexpected however as a Temple community we have thrived under the direction of Rabbi Perlman and Rabbi Bernie. Our building has been closed since Friday, March 13, 2020. That certainty has no reflection on how our Temple family has come together. There is a sense of positive energy amongst our congregants and amongst those out of towners who join us for our evening minyanim. I am so grateful to all of you for your support – financial, spiritual, and emotional. You dedicate your time, share your ideas, and contribute to our Temple. We must continue to grow our community. I would be remiss if I did not thank our clergy, Dr. Newton, our ad hoc / task force committee and all of you for your patience and understanding during these past 6 months. Many decisions were made quickly however with safety and health concerns at the forefront. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, Mark and my family, I wish all of you a healthy, happy, and sweet New Year. L’Shanah Tovah Tikatevu Adele Lubarsky
Sisterhood Salutations Shalom, This year, we usher in the New Year of 5781 in a most unusual way as we are separated from one another by the Covid-19 pandemic. We greet each other and pray together through virtual services on Zoom, hoping that the New Year will bring with it the opportunity to once again gather in person. Yet, even in our separate homes, we remain together as one community. During tough times, our community has shown that we have the ability to focus on the positive. Sisterhood will continue to look to the future, to a time when we can meet and implement the programs and events that enhance our lives and provide support for our Temple and for the well- being of the Greater Peabody community, a time when our dreams for togetherness become a reality. Now is the time to think ahead to those days by contacting our officers and board members with your suggestions for future innovative programming ideas. Our community is at its best when we are all included and participating. Let your voice be heard now, and your physical presence and involvement be among us in the months ahead. My family and I wish you all a happy, healthy, and sweet New Year. L’Shanah Tovah Tikatevu, Esther Kaufman Sisterhood Recording Secretary
Men’s Club Salutations
The Temple Ner Tamid Men's Club is much more than a social
organization. The Temple Ner Tamid Men's Club promotes fellowship
through its various social, educational, religious, recreational and
community service activities. We are committed to working together
with the entire congregation and clergy to benefit the community, our
synagogue, and ourselves as individuals. We meet on a regularly
monthly basis throughout the year. The meetings provide an
informative and entertaining forum to discuss a myriad of men's club
issues and sets the foundation for the programs that we will run and
the assistance we will lend throughout the year.
The club is open to any men affiliated with the temple or men who are
just interested in being part of a Jewish men’s organization and the
benefits that it brings.
Please join us at our meetings and events. Please get involved!
From my family to yours, wishing you a healthy sweet and prosperous
New Year.
L’Shanah Tovah,
Steve Ring
TNT Men’s Club President
The Prayers of Our Lips
G-d of our life, there are days when our burdens overwhelm us, when the road ahead seems dreary, when the skies are grey and threatening. On such days our lives have no music, our hearts are lonely and our spirits are robbed of courage. Flood our path with light, we beseech You; direct our vision to promising skies; attune our hearts to the uplifting music of life. Grant us the awareness of true comradeship with others, to sustain us, and so quicken our spirits that we may be able to encourage those who journey with us on the road of life to dedicate themselves to Your honor and glory. Amen
A prayer for our congregation as we enter the New Year: May the door to this synagogue be wide enough to receive all who
hunger for love, all who are lonely for fellowship. May it welcome all who have cares to unburden, thanks to express,
hopes to nurture. May the door of this synagogue be narrow enough to shut out
pettiness and pride, envy and enmity. May its threshold be no stumbling block to young or straying feet. May it be too high to admit complacency, selfishness and harshness. May this synagogue be, for all who enter, the doorway to a richer and
more meaningful life. (by Rabbi Sidney Greenberg)
On behalf of the Men’s Club of Temple Ner Tamid, we would like to thank those who donated to the 2020 Yom HaShoah
Yellow Candle program.
Thank you.
Holocaust Remembrance Day (Yom HaShoah)
Begins the evening of April 8th, 2021
“Death As Homecoming” We are what we are by what we come from. We achieve what we do by what we hope for. Our ultimate home has no specific content. Our hope is G-d. We trust that He will not desert those who trust in Him.
O L-rd, thou hast searched me and know me! Thou knowest when I sit down and when I rise up; thou discernest my thoughts from afar. Thou searchest out my path and my lying down and art acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, lo, O L-rd, thou knowest it altogether. Thou dost beset me behind and before, and layest they hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain it. Whither shall I go from thy Spirit? Or whither shall I flee from they presence? If I ascend to heaven, thou art there! If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there thy hand shall lead me, and they right hand shall hold me. If I say, “Let only darkness cover me, and the light about me be night,” even the darkness is not dark to thee, the night is bright as the day; for darkness is as light with thee.
Psalms 139:1-2 The ultimate hope for a life beyond the grave was not born in reflection about the soul but rather in reflection about G-d and what He does and means to the soul. G-d’s being a shelter and a refuge forever held meaning to life here and now as well as to life beyond. The meaning as well as mode of being which man hopes to attain beyond the threshold of dying remains an impenetrable mystery. Yet it is the thought of being in G-d’s knowing that may be both the root and the symbol of the ultimate hope. As said above, man’s being in the world is according to the Bible, preceded by man’s being known to G-d. Human existence follows divine anticipation. “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you” (Jeremiah 1:5). We live in the universe of His knowing. What guides and sustains our thinking about afterlife is relatedness to G-d. Apart from such relatedness and trust, there is no ground for such a hope. Our greatest problem is not how to continue, but how to return. “How can I repay unto the L-rd all his bountiful dealing with me?” (Psalms 116:2). When life is an answer, death is a homecoming. “Precious in the sight of the L-rd is the death of his saints” (Psalms 116:14). For our greatest problem is but a resonance of G-d’s concern: How can I repay unto man all his bountiful dealings with me? “For the mercy of G-d endureth forever. This is the meaning of existence: to reconcile liberty with service, the passing with the lasting, to weave the threads of temporality into the fabric of eternity. The deepest wisdom man can attain is to know that his destiny is to aid, to serve. We have to conquer in order to succumb; we have to acquire in order to
The Mourners Kaddish
The Kaddish prayer is recited daily by hundreds of thousands old and young, rich
and poor; learned and ignorant, throughout the world. The tenderest threads of filial
feeling and recollection are entwined about this prayer. Even those Jews who are lax
and indifferent in religious observance consider it a sacred act of reverence towards
their departed father and mother to say Kaddish every day for eleven months and then
one day a year, on the Yahrzeit.
Its origin is mysterious. We find foreshadowing of it in the biblical books; prayers
for the dead are mentioned in the books of teachers; and echoes of it in the writings of
the early mystics; but the prayer in its entirety we find neither in the Bible, nor in the
Mishna, nor in the vast Talmudic and Midrashic literatures. It seems to be a gradual
growth, continued from generation to generation, from age to age, until in the period of
the Gaonim, some twelve centuries ago, it attained the form which we have before us in
our prayer books.
So much as to history of the Kaddish. What of its content?
The Kaddish exhausts itself in glorification of G-d, in supplication for G-d’s Kingdom,
and for peace upon the House of Israel; but there is no reference to death, in this prayer,
or to the hereafter!
While the Kaddish is recited in memory of the departed, it contains no
reference to death. Rather it is an avowal made in the midst of our sorrow,
that G-d is just, though we do not always comprehend His ways. When death
seems to overwhelm us, negating life, the Kaddish renews our faith in the
worthwhileness of life. Through the Kaddish, we publicly manifest our desire
and intention to assume the relation to the Jewish community which our
parents and into their lifetime. Continuing the chain of tradition that binds
generation to generation we express our undying faith in G-d’s love and
justice, and pray that He will speed the day when His Kingdom shall finally
be established and His peace pervade the world.
Meaning of the Kaddish
give away; we have to triumph in order to be overwhelmed. Man has to understand in order to believe, to know in order to accept. The aspiration is to obtain; the perfection is to dispense. This is the meaning of death: the ultimate self-dedication to immortality, for this act of giving away is reciprocity on man’s part for G-d’s gift of life. For the pious man it is a privilege to die.
-Excerpts from writing of Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel
Yizkor: What is Memory? Where does yesterday go? What happens to the days which have passed? Are they consumed as objects which are destroyed by fire. Leaving only ashes behind? Or is there perhaps some indestructible quality Which can save the past from annihilation? The answer lies not in the days themselves, But rather in us. It rests within our power to save the yesterdays and the means for achieving this is memory. What is memory? It is the G-d-given gift Of being able to behold the Golden days of the sunset Which went before While standing in the ensuing gloom. It is the ability to hear the sweet melody After the instruments have ceased playing. What is memory? It is the ability to feel the seal and spirit of youth In the midst of the disillusionments of the later life. It is the ability to dance in the heart When the legs can no longer keep up with the music. What is memory? It is gazing at the bride beneath the canopy And remembering the infant in the crib. It is playing with the grandchildren and seeing their parents. It is celebrating a boy’s Bar Mitzvah and simultaneously attending the Bris. What is memory? It is all that is left to us From the burnt-out hopes and striving, as well as the pain and sorrow, of the past. What is memory? It is that in which, above all else, is to be found the source or our immortality.
