The hay wagons were used on the first day but retired for the rest of the weekend as the buses for remote parking dropped off and picked up in the main parking lot. The crushed asphalt paths in the track section of the flea market really helped in getting around. As for the event itself, well, what is there to say? It’s Dayton (Xenia)! I saw Mac, KD8TPO and Bill, WA8HEA down there, and I found out some future developments for the System Fusion line (including a forthcoming firmware update for the top-line mobile and HT rigs). On a personal note, I happened to win door prizes at two forums, including a black Yaesu jacket at the System Fusion forum. You’ll likely have to wait until the fall to see me wear it, though. This is June, and what does that mean for hams? Field Day, that’s what! We’ll be operating with the LARC once again. Plans for the event will likely be similar to previous years but with some changes due to lessons learned. Dave, N8HKU, will have the details in this month’s club presentation. Unfortunately, I will not be participating with the group this year as I expect to be out of town that weekend. I’m not sure where I will be that weekend, but I would like to visit another Field Day site and possibly operate from there. There won’t be any club meetings in July or August, but we’ll be back in September. If anyone has a topic on which they’d like to present, please let me know. We’re always looking for interesting topics. 73, Roger, KD8CSE

President’s Notes for June 2018

As I begin these notes, we are in the first hot period of the season. The air

conditioning is really getting a workout at my house and probably at your

houses too. We hardly had any spring to speak of, going from an extended winter into

what feels like the height of summer.

It’s been a little over a week since Dayton/Xenia Hamvention wrapped up a second

successful fest at the Greene County Fairgrounds. Yes, there was rain; it wouldn’t be

mid-May in the Dayton area if there wasn’t any. Yes, there was some mud, but it wasn’t

as bad as last years. The hay wagons were used on the first day but retired for the rest

of the weekend as the buses for remote parking dropped off and picked up in the main

parking lot. The crushed asphalt paths in the track section of the flea market really

helped in getting around. As for the event itself, well, what is there to say? It’s Dayton

(Xenia)! I saw Mac, KD8TPO and Bill, WA8HEA down there, and I found out some

future developments for the System Fusion line (including a forthcoming firmware

update for the top-line mobile and HT rigs). On a personal note, I happened to win door

prizes at two forums, including a black Yaesu jacket at the System Fusion forum. You’ll

likely have to wait until the fall to see me wear it, though.

This is June, and what does that mean for hams? Field Day, that’s what! We’ll be

operating with the LARC once again. Plans for the event will likely be similar to

previous years but with some changes due to lessons learned. Dave, N8HKU, will have

the details in this month’s club presentation. Unfortunately, I will not be participating

with the group this year as I expect to be out of town that weekend. I’m not sure where I

will be that weekend, but I would like to visit another Field Day site and possibly

operate from there.

There won’t be any club meetings in July or August, but we’ll be back in September. If

anyone has a topic on which they’d like to present, please let me know. We’re always

looking for interesting topics.

K2EZ Rover & EMCOMM Vehicle at Hamvention - Roger Reini, KD8CSE

The major theme of this year’s

Hamvention was “Amateur Radio –

Serving the Community.” Mobile and

emergency communications play a large

part in community service, and in

support of this, there were several vehicles on display. One of these

vehicles was the K2EZ rover/mobile and emergency communications

vehicle.

The vehicle is owned by Andrea Slack, K2EZ. It is a 2002 Explorer (we of

the Ford Amateur Radio League certainly approve her choice of vehicle!)

and is her second rover vehicle; her first was a 1987 red Bronco (we

approve of that, too!). It can handle all HF bands, all VHF bands, and UHF

up to 1.3 GHz with power levels of up to 400W on HF, 180W on VHF, 90W

on 70 cm, and 20W on the microwave bands.

Here’s a video where K2EZ is explaining what each antenna is:
