FRONTIERS OF TRAUMATREATMENT

The majority of people who seek psychiatric care have histories of trau-ma, chaos, or neglect. PTSD is only one possible adaptation to trauma- it rarely exists by itself, and it does not take account of the differential effects of trauma at different stages of mental and brain development.

In the past two decades there has been not only an explosion of knowl-edge about how experience shapes the central nervous system and the for-mation of the self, but also about what constitutes effective intervention. Advances in the neurosciences, attachment research and in information processing show how brain function is shaped by experience and that life itself can continually transform perception and biology.

Overwhelming experiences alter the capacity for self-regulation, atten-tion and memory processing due to changes in subcortical, i.e., “uncon-scious”, levels of the brain. The memory imprints of the trauma(s) are held as bodily states and physical action patterns. This causes the entire human organism to automatically react to current experiences as a recurrence of the past. While language, insight and understanding are useful to deal with confusion and secrecy, it rarely is enough to deal with the unspeakable, in-tolerable and unacceptable nature of traumatic experience.

Effective treatment of post-traumatic problems needs to include ad-dressing the imprint of trauma on the physical experience of the self as be-ing helpless and in danger. Recovery needs to incorporate dealing with de-fensive efforts that helped ensure survival, and incorporate physical experi-ences that contradict feelings and sensations associated with helplessness and disconnection.

This workshop will present current research findings about how people’s brains, minds and bodies are affected by traumatic experiences. We will explore specific techniques that address affect regulation, the integration of dissociated aspects of experience, overcoming helplessness, attentional deficits and the re-integration of human connections.

OBJECTIVES

1. This lecture will review recent deve-lopments in neuroscience as they relate to the treatment of PTSD.

2. This lecture will emphasize techniques of physical mastery, affect regulation atten-tion and memory processing

3. Learn the lessons from neuroscience re-search on the ways trauma is remembered and subsequent experience is processed.

4. Examine the potential and limitations of techniques such as EMDR, neurofeedback in the resolution of trauma.

5. This lecture will review recent developments in the treatment of PTSD, and the effects that they have been shown to have on the re-covery of traumatized individuals.

6. To examine how mind and brain process trauma, and its lasting traces on multiple psy-chological and biological processes.

7. To spell out the diagnosis of Developmental Trauma Disorder, as proposed by the National Child Traumatic Stress Network

8. Address how adverse childhood experien-ces affect brain development, emotion re-gulation & cognition.

9. Describe the acquisition of affect regula-tion.

10. Summarize current knowledge about how mindfulness meditation and yoga affect brain function

11. How neurofeedback can alter attentional systems in the Central Nervous System.

12. Indicate uses of EMDR, yoga, touch and group and theatre in resolving trauma.

BESSEL A. VAN DER KOLK, M.D. is Medical Director of The Trauma Center in Bos-ton, a premier institution in the US for the study of traumatic stress and the training of trauma- therapists, and Professor of Psychiatry at Boston University Medical School. He is past President of International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies. Both a clinician and a researcher he has published numerous peer reviewed scientific articles on various aspects of trauma, including 1) the neurobiology of trauma 2) yoga for treat-ing PTSD; 2) the use of theater for violence pre-vention; 3) the mechanisms of EMDR; 4) sensory integration in traumatized children; and 5) the use of neurofeedback in PTSD.

He participated in the first neuroimaging study of PTSD, in the first study linking Borderline Personality Disorder with childhood trauma; he was co-principal investigator of the DSM IV Field Trial for PTSD and is chair of the NCTSN DSM 5 workgroup on Developmental Trauma Disorder. His work integrates his, and other investigators’ neuroscience research to identify ap-propriate treatments for PTSD. He has taught at universities and hospitals around the world, including most European countries, Israel, Russia, South Africa, China, Japan, Indonesia, Turkey, India, Argentina and Australia.

He is author of the New York Times bestselling book The Body Keeps the Score: Mind, Brain and Body in Healing From Trauma. London/New York Viking Penguin, 2014. (Italian title: il Corpo Accusa il Colpo (Cortina).
