“I loved hearing [the artist’s] perspective and think his talk was one of the most memorable that I’ve seen. I love inferring the cultural differences and the message of the power of music and its impact on global health! He was a great storyteller, which is what humans crave – in addition to music! Music’s power in global health is something
that may be overlooked but I felt was powerful!”
Julia Weber ‘15INTS 17/GEO 2: Global Health and Society
“At first look, I’ll admit that [the performance] didn’t seem the most appealing or intriguing because the concept is quite unusual and can be confusing to some. But that was the best part about it in the end; I was so pleasantly surprised with the concept, [the artist’s] ability to insightfully explain its purpose and the methodology behind his
work, as well as his passion for creating art out of meaningful materials.”

In the 2016/2017 Season, the Hopkins Center is pleased to continue its partnership with the Dartmouth Center for the Advancement of Learning (DCAL) to support faculty who include Hop programming in their syllabus. In recognition of the unique experiential value that the performing arts bring to classroom curriculum, DCAL can underwrite the ticket costs for your class to attend a Hop Visiting Artist, Student Ensemble or Theater Department performance, or an Event Cinema presentation. If your students are required to attend—and there are no departmental or other funds to cover ticket costs—you are eligible for support from the DCAL/Hop Experiential Learning Fund. Funding is first-come, first-served and faculty tickets will continue to be underwritten by the Hop. You and your students will be asked to reflect on the experiential learning value of the experience afterwards.
To request tickets for your class, please complete this form online: https://goo.gl/forms/14HrkOEHf3DLLF6H2. All requests are tentative until confirmed by the Hopkins Center, pending ticket availability and some restrictions. Requests will be processed in the order they are received.
With Dartmouth’s renewed focus on the value of experiential learning, the Hop is excited to continue exploring the many ways that the arts serve as a tool for active learning—making abstract concepts visible and physical, engaging with real-world problems and giving students an opportunity to reflect on their learning. If you haven’t already discovered how the Hop can support teaching and learning on campus, we encourage you to take advantage of our world class performances and films as an educational tool for your students. Consider this Curricular Connections Guide your invitation!
DID YOU KNOW?• Many of the artists listed are available for workshops, discussions, meals and class visits. The Hop
can provide supplemental resources, including articles, program notes, videos and more. Contact us for information about arranging a meeting with your students.
• Subject to availability and some restrictions, each faculty member bringing a class to a performance will receive one FREE TICKET to the show for him/herself.
• Free, public programs accompany many Hop performances. Most do not require a reservation, but let us know if you are bringing a group of students and we will be happy to make accommodations.

Twenty-five years, 15 albums and three Grammy awards since her major orchestral debut at age 12, Hahn has developed from “a prodigy of rare clarity and virtuosity…[to] a daring, mature artist” (The New York Times), known for her musicality and stage presence. Accompanied in her first Upper Valley appearance by renowned pianist Robert Levin, she showcases probing interpretations of both well-known violin classics and the music of our time.

A CO-PRODUCTION WITH NORDLANDVISUAL THEATRE AND THE HOPKINS CENTER
WAKKA WAKKA PRODUCTIONS
MADE IN CHINAFriday & Saturday, March 31 & April 1TheMooreTheater• 8 pm
The extravagantly creative, Obie-winning puppet troupe Wakka Wakka addresses human rights, consumerism and American-Chinese relations in this satirical musical. Baby pandas, dancing appliances and romping middle-aged lovers populate Wakka’s universe of tiny-to-huge puppets, belting out original songs. As it did with climate change in Baby Universe (at the Hop in 2012), the company spins the issues of our times into a vastly entertaining tale with surreal dimensions, lots of laughs and powerful take-aways.
Recommended for ages 16 and up. Adult language, puppet nudity.

BRAD MEHLDAU Tuesday, April 4SpauldingAuditorium•7pm
Mehldau is a supremely expressive improviser whose performances aretranscendent journeys. With a breathtaking command of the instrument, he blends diverse influences—jazz and classical, the American Songbook, reimagined pop tunes and originals—into impromptu musical creations. Sensuous, cerebral and incandescent, his playing “turns Broadway show tunes into pastoral rhapsodies and blues vamps into meditations on the meaning of life” (The Guardian, UK).

Admired on both sides of the Atlantic, Cleveland-based early music ensemble Apollo’s Fire is Baroque music in its unbuttoned state, led by charismatic harpsichord virtuoso Jeanette Sorrell. Inspired by the 18th-century Leipzig coffeehouse where Bach and his student orchestra played lively concertos, this program treats listeners to fiery strings, colorful recorders and Sorrell’s dizzying solos in works by Bach, Telemann and Vivaldi.

Witness the premiere of a work composed by Molly Herron in collaboration with Thayer School of Engineering—performed on instruments made by Thayer students! The third composer commissioned by the Hop’s STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) Arts program, Herron creates music that has been called “a beautiful collusion” (Seen and Heard International) and described as “showcasing a wonderful consideration of counterpoint and sound-in-time” (I Care If You Listen). Just in time for Thayer’s 150th birthday, it’s a testimony to the creativity and innovation that link music and STEM disciplines.

DVORÁK Stabat Mater, Op. 58
The Hop’s town-gown choral society marks its 210th anniversary with Dvorák’s most beloved choral work. Composed in the wake of the deaths of his three young children, the Stabat Mater is a powerful expression of both grief and our ability to transcend it. With melodic abundance, harmonic richness and darkly beautiful scoring, it is both grand and intimate, consoling and spine-tingling. With orchestra and guest soloists.

BEETHOVEN Piano Concerto No. 2 with Jessica Tong ’17 pianoDEBUSSY La MerRAVEL Boléro
The Hop’s resident orchestra pairs Beethoven with two French impressionists. With Jessica Tong ’17 playing the part Beethoven wrote for his own prodigious piano skills, the concerto abounds in charm and good humor, as well as eloquent slow passages. The three-movement Debussy evokes the ocean while Ravel’s sultry Spanish dance—his most famous composition—slowly builds to a thundering finish.
