Our topic for National History Day is the Black Panther Party. We becameinterested in this topic because weve always been interested in African American

History, and we wanted to take a topic more modern and which we dont know

much about. We were originally thinking about doing something related to the Civil

Rights Movement, but that is a somewhat common topic and Martin Luther King Jr.is a well-known man. We kept the topic in the same period and looked for other

organizations and revolutionary leaders during the time of the Civil Rights movementand looked to find a topic on Malcolm X. Since the Black Panther Party followed the

ideas of Malcolm X, we found information on them and decided to use this topic.

To find information and sources for the Black Panther Party, we first looked up

cases and trials because they were a revolutionist group that committed crimes and

murder. We also tried to look for other leaders opinions on the party, like MartinLuther King Jr. To show that the means of the Black Panther Party were wrong, we

also looked for information on the overall impact of the party, to see how successful

they were and how their means helped and hurt them.

For this project, we chose a website for the presentation because we could

include pictures of newspaper trials, and we could include information on court

cases against the Party. We also found a video clip that could be used, and with the

information we wanted to include, using a website seemed to be the best way toorganize everything. To create our project, we first wrote information about how,

where, when and by whom the Black Panther Party started. We also included the

thesis in my first page to make it clear what is being argued. Then we found the

three main reasons we would use to support my argument and created tabs forthem, and edited the rest from there.

Our project relates to the NHD theme, rights and responsibilities, because the

Black Panther Party was fighting for better rights for African Americans, but they alsohad the responsibility to keep African Americans from being harmed, along with

members of the Party. The Black Panther Party believed that the government had

the responsibility to improve rights for Africans Americans, but the government

wasnt doing enough to help so the Black Panther Party took that responsibility.
