THE BIOLOGICAL SPECIES CONCEPT EMPHASIZES REPRODUCTIVE ISOLATIONChapter 24, Section 1

DEFINITIONS OF SPECIES

• Biological species concept: a species is a group of populations whose members have the potential to interbreed in nature and produce viable, fertile offspring.

• Morphological species concept: definition of a species in terms of measurable anatomical criteria.

• Ecological species concept: definition of a species in terms of ecological niche, the sum of how members of the species interact with the nonliving and living parts of their environment.

• Phylogenetic species concept: definition of a species as the smallest group of individuals that share a common ancestor.

WHAT DEFINITION WILL WE PRIMARILY USE???

Biological Species Concept

REPRODUCTIVE ISOLATION

• The formation of a new species hinges on reproductive isolation- the existence of biological barriers that impede members of two species from interbreeding and producing viable, fertile offspring.

• Barriers can be classified according to whether they contribute to reproductive isolation before or after fertilization.• Prezygotic barriers• Postzygotic barriers

AND THE GRAMMY GOES TO…

• Divide into seven musical groups.

• Each group will draw a type of reproductive isolation and create a song about that subject.

• Song Guidelines• Length: at least 4 line (can be more).• The song should be sung to a tune of a well known song, jingle, or nursery rhyme.• The song should include the definition of the term and an example.

• Poster Guidelines• Include the term and the name of the song.• Include the definition of the term and an example.

• The musical groups will perform the song and explain the poster at the end of the period.

“BEL AIR” ISOLATIONTO THE TUNE OF “FRESH PRINCE FROM BEL AIR”

BY: COACH BROOKER

Now this is story all about how

Two species’ homes got turned upside down,

And I’d like to take a minute,

Just sit right there,

I’ll tell you how two garter snakes live in different “Bel-Airs.”

In North America born and raised,

In the water is where some spend most of their days.

Chillin’, eatin’, and relaxin’ all cool,

Swimmin’ up and down the nice cold pool.

But a couple of snakes said water was no good,

Started swimmin’ for a new neighborhood.

They got right out and were well prepared,

So they decided that this would be their new “Bel Air.”
