Music & Missions Trip to El Salvador

From May 16 to 26, forty-one Baylor students and faculty traveled to El Salvador to minister through music by offering concerts, music

teaching, cultural connections, and worship leadership. Five Calvarians participated in the trip – Brenda Bradley, Isaac Bradley, Randall Bradley, Amy Farnell, and Ross Tarpley. Additionally, we were able to connect with Elizabeth Ross for three days of the trip.

A highlight of the trip included teaching in public and private schools. The team was prepared to teach two levels of five different core music subjects: singing, music reading, movement, drumming, and crafts. At any given time, the team was able to teach ten simultaneous classes. We offered these sessions both in a Catholic parochial school in Chalchuapa for one morning and in a public school in La Palma for two full days. Neither of these schools offers regular music classes, and the school in La Palma has appealed unsuccessfully to the Peace Corp to send a music teacher for the past ten years.

Additionally, we were able to assist in preparing and serving a meal in a soup kitchen in the Charismatic Catholic Center in Chalchuapa. Following the meal, we sang a mini-concert to the fifty or so mostly older people, who without the soup kitchen’s regular meals, would not be able to have at least one hot meal per day. Since the workers in the facility were cooking much of the meal on an open

fire, our team was inspired to collect enough money to purchase a gas range for their use. We gave the stove in honor of a Houston couple who gave generously to the El Salvador trip.

Also, we were in El Salvador during the beatification of Arch Bishop Oscar Romero. Saturday, May 23, over 260,000 people from all over the world gathered in San Salvador for the celebration. In addition to thousands who arrived in busses into the capitol city, hundreds of pilgrims and reporters gathered from North

America, Europe, and beyond. Our team had been invited to participate in the celebration by joining with an El Salvadoran choir to offer a concert at El Rosario Catholic Church. However, prior to the concert, we visited Romero’s crypt and sang a spontaneous mini concert for those gathered there to offer their homage to Romero. As one

reporter commented, people from all over the world came to offer their prayers and flowers, but only one group (all the way from America) came to offer their music.

Lastly, we were able to participate in leading worship in three different congregations, and we sang several other concerts in schools, churches, parks, and outdoor locations. With a

majority of our program in Spanish, we were able to make instant connections with the people we encountered.

Ever since I was little kid, music camp has always been

an important part of my summer. Whether I was five years old and sitting at my dad’s feet while he helped kids run their lines, was an adolescent teen trying to keep my voice from cracking while singing a solo, or finally having the joy of teaching songs to young kids about the promises found in the Bible, I can’t stress how important music camp has been to me throughout my life. Much of what I learned about being a young Christian was from the music I learned at church, and if pressed, I know I could remember many of those music camp songs even today.

This summer, your kids will be learning about numerous Bible stories and promises as we prepare and present Kathie Hill’s musical “The Bible Tells Me So Show.” This musical is

presented in the form of a Family Feud-like game show, with ten songs that talk about God’s faithfulness to take care of His children.

Rehearsals begin on Sunday, June 21st (5-8:30 pm) and will continue June 22nd through 25th (6-8:30 pm). The two presentations of the musical will be Thursday, June 25th (7:30 pm) and Sunday, June 28th (10:45 am). The price is $25 per child (for children who have completed 1st-6th grade). As soon as you register your children, they will receive a CD of the musical. If you would be willing to help us with snacks, set construction, or any other projects, we definitely have a place for you. Please feel free contact

me with any questions you may have ([email protected] or 918 513-1450).
