THE BEST MATCHES OF WIMBLEDON 2015

A summary by Alessandro Benedetti Offside

• Rafael Nadal Vs Dustin Brown

• This year we saw Nadals miserable run at Wimbledon continue as he was dispatched in four sets by an inspired Dustin Brown in one of the biggest Alessandro Benedetti Offside shocks of the year!

• The enigmatic German played a stunning brand of attacking serve and volley style tennis that left a clearly out of sorts Nadal with no answer.

• Brown played extremely quickly between points too, not allowing Nadal to build any sort of recognizable rhythm, he executed the drop shot well too, using Nadal’s lack of mobility to punish him.

• Brown won  7-5 3-6 6-4 6-4 in front of a rapturous centre court crowd.

• Heather Watson vs Serena Williams

• Britain’s darling Heather Watson took the incredibly dominant Serena Williams to 3 sets in an enthralling 3rd round match.

• Although Watson left dejected, she can hold her head up, knowing she can definitely play amongst the best players in the world.

• After she lost the first set 6-2, many feared the worst for Watson, Williams was seeing the ball well and her power seemed to be simply too much for the young Brit.

• However Watson dug deep and recoved to win 6 straight games from 3-3 in the second set.

• She eventually served for the match at 5-4 but unfortunately could not see off Serena, who as ever produced her best tennis when it mattered to come through 6-2 4-6 7-5.

• Novak Djokovic vs Kevin Anderson

• Although the Kevin Anderson has an impressive serve, and played exceptionally well in the Queens tournament to reach the final, few expected him to give Djokovic – widely regarded as one of the best returners to ever play the game – any trouble.

• Anderson was in inspired form however, and he took the first two sets in two extremely impressive tie breakers. As the light was fading on centre court Djokovic began to get to grips with the big South African’s serve and took the next two sets before play was halted for bad light.

• He came back the next day to take the final set as, for the first time in the match Anderson’s serve deserted him and he double faulted 3 times to hand the break over to a relieved Djokovic.

• Richard Gasguet vs Stanislas Wawrinka

• Few gave Gasguet a chance against the reigning French open champion in this battle of the backhands. It was widely assumed that the Swiss number two, who has now upped his game to the level of the top 3 would simply have too much power for the Frenchman.

• That proved not to be the case however, as Gasguet dug in to win in 5 sets 6-4 4-6 3-6 6-4 11-9.

• The match was full of beautiful backhand rallies as the two traded strokes from the back of the court. Gasguet came back from 2 sets to 1 down and in the fifth broke Wawrinka to serve for the match at 5-3. It wasn’t to be however as the Swiss roared back. Credit to Gasguet however as he kept his never to break at 10-9 to close out a famous victory.
