Nurse’s Notes

Allergies! Ugh! Medically referred to as allergic rhinitis or allergic rhinosinusitis, allergies are characterized by fits of sneezing, runny nose, stuffy nose, and frequently accompanied by itching of the eyes, nose, back of the throat, and even the inner ear. Other symptoms include postnasal drip, coughing, irritability, trouble sleeping and/or waking frequently in the night, and fatigue.

Allergic rhinitis can be seasonal (occurring during specific seasons) or perennial (occurring year round). The allergens that most commonly cause seasonal allergies include pollens from trees, grasses, and weeds, as well as spores from fungi and molds. Symptoms of seasonal allergies are predictable and reproducible from year to year.

The allergens that most commonly cause perennial allergic rhinitis are dust mites, cockroaches, animal dander, and fungi or molds. Persistent/perennial symptoms are more common than purely intermittent seasonal symptoms, although many people have perennial symptoms with seasonal exacerbations. Perennial allergic rhinitis tends to be more difficult to treat.

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America lists San Antonio as one of the most challenging places to live with spring allergies. Their 2016 study slated San Antonio as the 22nd worst-city for allergies in the nation, based upon a city’s pollen score, medicine utilization per patient and number of board-certified allergists per patient.

So, WHAT DO WE DO ABOUT IT!?!?!?! First, have a conversation with your primary care provider about your symptoms. He/She may order allergy testing, depending on the severity of your symptoms and response to treatments. Treatments for allergies may include: Nose rinses, steroid nose sprays, antihistamines, decongestants, allergy shots, or allergy pills (under the tongue). Conservative measures that you can do to reduce symptoms include reducing outdoor activities during times of high pollen counts, keep car/house windows closed, shower before bed, and wear a dust-mask when outside.

I wish you all a happy, healthy, and minimally-affected allergy season.

Be. The. Change.

HOW TO PREVENTMOSQUITOES!

Adult mosquitoes lay eggs in stagnate or slow moving water, and on moist soil or leaf litter in areas likely to collect water.By eliminating these water sources, you can keep new generations of mosquitoes from taking up residence in your yard.

Lawn 101By Mark Peterson, SAWS Conservation Project Coordinator

Follow these straightforward tips and you should have a healthy green lawn that uses minimal water.

1. Select the correct grass typeAbandon the idea that you can have any grass species you want. The amount of sunlight determines your species. Ten hours or more of direct sunlight dictates Bermuda grass. Less than ten hours and you’re limited to zoysia and St. Augustine. If you have less than five hours of direct sunlight, then forget about a lawn. It’s not going to happen.

2. Mow weeklySelect at least one day a week as your mowing day and stick to it. Mowing weekly improves grass health and reduces weeds. Also, always mow high — 3 inches for St. Augustine, 2 inches for zoysia and 1 ½ inches for Bermuda grass.

3. Compost and aerateThis is the second most important activity you can do for your lawn. Of the two, composting is the most important and should be done twice a year. Aeration can be done once or even every other year. Both increase the soil’s ability to absorb water and oxygen, each crucial for strong root

development. Strong roots means less need for nutrients and water.

4. Leave the clippings on the lawnGrass is a “heavy feeder,” meaning it requires more nutrients than other plants. Leaving the clippings and adding compost in spring and fall eliminates the need for additional fertilizer most of the time. If the blades are not growing or are light green in color, then additional fertilizer may be needed. Apply only after April 15 and before November 1.

5. WaterOf course, I’m going to encourage you to cut back on water. And by following all the aforementioned rules, you can dramatically reduce water usage to no more than once a week. The most important times of the year to water are spring and fall. Plants in South Texas are adapted to grow in spring and fall, not summer. Help them with their natural tendencies.

No need for complex chemicals or chants. Select, mow, compost and water are all it takes to maintain a healthy, green lawn.
