Starting this year, the “new” condensed five-day Gettysburg Fest (June 11-15) offers an action-packed, must attend experience for locals and visitors alike. I refer to it as “The Best Five Days

of Your Summer!” We are very excited to call the historic Gettysburg College campus our new home for what we consider the “core festival”—the Thursday June 12 through Saturday June 14— of the event.

This year, attendees will be able to enjoy over 50 live performances on three outdoor stages and four indoor venues. We have teamed with three wonderful new partners to present the entertainment on these three primary stages: Fitzgerald Auto Malls, XFINITY and Troegs Brewing.

The best local, regional and national entertainment—representing Broadway to Alternative Rock, from Classical to Country, Blues to R&B— will energize Gettysburg this coming

week! The US Army Concert Band and Soldiers’ Chorus returns as does the always popular Blues BBQ; and we will offer an all-new comedy night—Laughing With Lincoln—present-

ed by Steven B. Wiley and the Lincoln Leadership Institute. We close the event on Father’s Day, June 15th with a powerful, memorable production of “Beyond Glory”, starring world-re-

nowned actor, Stephen Lang!

We are selling tickets but all are affordable—the most expensive ticket price being $50 (and that includes a ‘meet and greet’ with Stephen Lang!). Most tickets are in the $15 to $30 range for some really world-class entertainment—the caliber of tal-ent you expect to spend much more to see!

We will offer seven different visual arts exhibits to showcase the best talent in the region. Returning is the annual Juried Art Show, in collaboration with the Adams County Arts Council; and two new student exhibits at the Musselman Library. A number of popular programs are back and in new locations throughout the campus: the plein air artist exhibit and fun Quick Draw competition presented by ACNB Bank; and the Edible Art Tour serves up the best visual and culinary art Gettysburg has to offer!

The community’s merchants and organizations are still a “part of the show” through the annual Gettysburg Fest Fringe, presented by ACNB Bank. You will struggle (in a fun way!) to decide where to start to take in the approximately 25 different events offered by the Fringe!

On Saturday, we offer six hours of amazing, free, family-friendly events as part of the new Family Celebration presented by PNC “Grow Up Great” and WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital. Families will be able to “make and take” art projects, be a part of the “Carnival of the Arts”, with a theme of Venice in celebration. Our popular Brass Band Festival returns, with a new twist that is sure to please guests of all ages—the Old Fashioned Pie and Ice Cream Social, presented by Kennie’s Markets and Turkey Hill Dairy! You will even be able to cheer on your favorite restaurant server in the First Annual Waiter-Waitress Challenge!

Thank you to our Fest sponsors—partners, really. While too numerous to mention in this introduction, the Gettysburg Fest is mostly a free and family-friendly event because of their investment—in time, financial support, and spirit. Please take a mo-ment to look at our sponsor page at the end of this program booklet—and show your appreciation for their investment in this event. We really could not offer this level and variety of programming without them.

We retained what was great with the “old festival” as we built the “new fest”. We continue offering the best performance, visual and culinary arts in the region. The Gettysburg Fest: Arts and Culture, Here and Now. This is YOUR festival—make the experience your own…but please experience it. Bring a friend.

Between Eric Paslay’s June 10 show in Charleston, S.C. and his June 13 performance in Hunter Mountain, NY, he will stop in the historic town of Gettysburg to take the stage on June 12 at Gettysburg Fest.

Those who frequently listen to country music radio know Paslay for hits such as “Friday Night” and “If the Fish Don’t Bite” but the relative newcomer has a complete set, and released an album earlier this year.

That’s a long way from his roots of performing in Texas.“We get to play shows and people are turning me up on the radio,” he said.

The past eight months have been a great experience for

Paslay, who grew up playing an old guitar that his dad would tune with needle nose pliers.

“Its a cool thought that people can listen to 11 songs that you have on their own,” he said of his recent album release.

The June 12 performance will be special to Paslay, as he has never performed for a crowd in Gettysburg.

“It is an amazing and sad thing to think we were fighting against ourselves. To see the statues and fields is amaz-ing,” he said.

History aside, Paslay said he is a big fan of festivals be-cause the crowds tend to be rowdier than at indoor shows.“The best thing is the weather is usually warm outside and I love that,” he said.

Though he played a villainous colonel in the hit movie “Avatar,” Stephen Lang dreams of military heroes.

The actor will be in Gettysburg June 15 to portray eight Congres-sional Medal of Honor recipients in the one-man show he wrote, “Beyond Glory.”

After performing the piece hundreds of times, often for troops in lo-cales ranging from the Persian Gulf to Korea, he said he sometimes dreams of the men whose true stories he tells.

“I won’t go so far as to say I’ve been visited by them in my dreams,” he said, “but that’s not out of the realm of possibility.”

Lang based the 80-minute show on a book with the same title, in which journalist Larry Smith gathered oral histories from 23 recipi-ents of the nation’s highest honor for action in the face of an enemy.

“Knocked out” by the book, Lang said he chose recipients from World War II and the Korean and Vietnam wars, and “attempted to refine the stories into 10-minute bullion cubes of drama.”

Picking a favorite would be like choosing among one’s children, Lang said, but the story of U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye is “beautiful.”

Before becoming the first Japanese-American to serve in the U.S. House and U.S. Senate, Inouye earned his Medal of Honor during World War II. His unit captured German machine-gun emplace-ments in Italy, with Inouye continuing to fight and lead even after a grenade shattered his right arm.

Lang performed the piece for Inouye on the occasion of his 80th birthday. “He wept and said he wished his father could have seen it,” Lang said, adding that other medal recipients have seen and been moved by the show.

The show’s central question, Lang said, is what led the men to “the crazy moment when they go above and beyond,” and what changes rippled outward from the profound “pebble in the pond of their lives.”

“Their lives articulate several qualities that are among the most noble qualities a person can have - courage, humility, fortitude,” Lang saidHe said he hopes “it rubs off on you,” because the men’s character “represents an ideal not merely in combat, but really in life.”

“Truthfully, these are ancient stories,” Lang said, and could just as easily have come from ancient battles like Agincourt or Thermopy-lae.

“There is a universality to them.,” he said, and for that reason the audience doesn’t need to come to the show with a detailed knowledge of history or a particular political stance regarding any

particular war.

“This is not a rah-rah piece,” Lang said. “I like to wave the flag as much anybody on July 4 or Memorial Day, but that’s not what this is about.”

Instead, the play is “about the phenomenon of war” and what it means for those who experience it, such as “these men, who are so human, like you or I,” Lang said.

“People connect with them,” he said. “People see their fathers, a lot of times.”

Every performance of the play “strikes new chords deeply, or some-times familiar chords with a slightly different reverberation,” he said.

“If you love theater, this is what I’ve got,” Lang said. “I can’t do better than this.”

Zach Williams’ songwriting career grew out of tragedy, but grew into what became The Lone Bellow. The band will bring their brand of “Brooklyn country” to the Get-tysburg Fest Friday, June 13, at 4:30 p.m. at the Fitzgerald Auto Malls Main Stage.

Georgia native Williams started writing when his wife suffered a spinal cord injury in a horseback riding accident and was diagnosed as a paraplegic. For months she underwent intensive therapy at the Shepard Center in Atlanta, and Williams dealt with his emotions in his journal.“I was going through obviously a very hard time,” he said. “I started reading (friends) my journal entries, and they encouraged me to learn to play the guitar and play at open mics.”

Williams’ wife eventually regained her ability to walk, and the couple set out for New York to see where Williams’ songwriting talent would take them. After working for a while as a solo artist, Williams said he remembers the day The Lone Bellow was born at a Brooklyn diner.Williams’ childhood friend Brian Elmquist was working a shift at Dizzy’s Diner, and Williams stopped by to try out some new songs. The two grew up together in Georgia and had actually performed together at a wedding, Williams said.

“It was a lot of fun from the get-go,” he said. Williams asked singer Kanene Pipkin to join their informal jam session, and after a few songs, Williams said he knew he wanted to leave his solo act behind and be a part of this new creation, which ultimately became The Lone Bellow. The band’s self-titled debut album contains songs from Williams’ own experience with tragedy as well as situations faced by close friends. “It flows between tragedy and hope and betrayal and redemption,” he said.

The band’s harmonies shine in every song, complemented by Elmquist on guitar, Ben Mars on bass, Brian Murphy on keyboards, Matt Knapp on lap steel and electric guitar, Jason Pipkin on banjo and mandolin, and Brian Griffin on drums. The rhythms are steady and energetic, but never overwhelming, giving a unique country/soul/rock vibe to the entire album.

The band is already working on a new album, due out this winter, and all three members are taking part in the songwriting process, Williams said. “Songwriting has become a daily routine for me,” he said. “It’s very important to us that we all write everything together. We want to curate art together.”

Williams said working with The Lone Bellow offers a much richer experience than performing solo. “It definitely feels a lot better making music with your best friends,” he said. “There wasn’t any real give and take (as a solo artist). I had always hoped to be a part of something rather than just being by myself.”

The honesty and open communication found in close friendships helps the band better convey their stories through their songs, Williams said.“You end up writing music a little closer to how you actually think and feel,” he said. The band has played at festivals throughout the United States, including the Newport Folk Festival and the Stagecoach Festi-val. They’ve also opened for acts like The Civil Wars and Brandi Car-lisle, but they’re now enjoying headlining their own shows, Williams said. The band is booked for this summer’s Bonnaroo and Telluride

Bluegrass Festival.

Williams said he’s never been to Gettysburg, but has enjoyed watching the excitement build for the band’s Fest performance on social media.Tickets for the show include performances by local band Cledus Snow Mother Truckers and Grand Old Ditch, and are $23.00 and $33.50. The Gettysburg Fest will include local talent and nationally-known acts, but one very special set will blend both types.

“The Boys are Back in Town” will feature three Gettysburg natives - Trevor Jones, Preston Hull and Joel Streeter - who nurtured their musical talents in their hometown and later left the area to perform around the country. Each local boy will perform his own free Friday night concert, and at the end of the night three will join together for one special song - you guessed it - “The Boys are Back in Town.”

Streeter began playing guitar and writing music at a young age. After releasing two 4-song EPs before the age of 19 with two Gettysburg-area bands, Joel attended college at Wesleyan University, studying guitar and playing in several popular regional acts. After college, Streeter lived and performed in Washington, D.C.and San Francisco and now lives in Brooklyn and performs in New York City. He is currently working on another album, which is expected to be out this fall.

Streeter said he is very exciting about performing at Gettysburg Fest again. He took to the stage in 2008 and 2012. “It is definitely some extra pressure in some way,” Streeter said, comparing a performance in his hometown to a show in New York. “Everyone wants to come back and do good for the people they grew up around.”

Those who remember Streeter’s music from his high school days may get a sense of deja vu. “Some of the songs I wrote when I was really young I still play today,” he said.

Hull writes in a variety of styles, from pop-rock to alt-country. After leaving Gettysburg, he studied at Boston’s Berklee College of Music and currently lives in Philadelphia. Hull performs annually at Gar-ryowen’s Irish Pub in Gettysburg, but is excited about the opportu-nity to perform outdoors at the Fest and introduce new listeners to his music.

“A lot of time people don’t come to a festival because of a specific artist, they come out just because it is a festival,” he said. When Jones takes to the stage, he will be surrounded by his band, Molehill. Molehill headlines some of Chicago’s most prominent venues and tours throughout the country. It seems that wherever

Molehill lands, Jones is reminded of home.

“One of the cool things about touring is I typically know people in every city we go to. It is definitely cool to come back to Gettysburg and be part of this festival,” he said.

The trio is certainly looking forward to their shows and final act, but they are more excited about Gettysburg Fest’s possibilities. “I think it is awesome. A lot of people know only one thing about Gettysburg. A festival shows there is more going on here than just the college and just the Civil War,” Streeter said.

Plein AirPlein Air (French for “open air”) painting became popular in the early nineteenth century in both Europe and America when paint manufacturers made a wide range of pre-mixed oil pigments available for the first time, and the easily transportable box easel was developed. Artists paint with natural light, using color to define form and generally finish the painting in one session. Plein Air artists have been an inte-gral part of Gettysburg Fest since its beginning seven years ago. This year, we have 12 artists who will be painting throughout town all week. Take some time to search them out and watch these great talents in action!

Gettysburg Fest makes well-thought-out decisions about what events we plan each year so we can provide something everyone will enjoy, and, this year – with the new format – we feel we have accom-plished the task! There is enter-tainment and activity at every turn. In addition to the busy schedules on the three primary stages, there are entertainers and vendors on the paths between each stage.

Here’s a glimpse into what you can be watching for:

BuskersBuskers are street performers who traditionally walk around while performing rather than staying on a stationary stage. And, usually, they are playing for tips. Their schedules throughout the week will vary, but keep your eye out for a magician, mime, balloon artist, various musicians and even a live radio show on Saturday. Justin Weber, a Yo Yo Busker will also be traveling the grounds Thursday through Saturday. Hailing from New York, Weber has performed around the world and even placed 2nd in the World Yo Yo Competition’s Artistic Performance Category. We’re excited to have him join the party at Gettysburg Fest!

Art Market & BazaarCentral PA is lucky to have a wellspring of artisans and craft-ers, and Gettysburg Fest is pleased to be able to provide them with a place to display and sell their work. The Art Market & Bazaar will fill the lawn between stages. Over 25 talented exhibitors will display and sell their wares, as well as interact

with the public while demonstrating their talents. Expect to find… Eco friendly bags, handmade skeleton key jewelry, original artwork, pottery, photographic art, re-purposed wool crafts, quirky stuffed animals, hand-beaded jewelry, handcraft-ed glassware, etched copper and sterling wire jewelry, Thirty-one Gifts, food gifts, customized lockets, and lots more.

Interactive ExhibitsWhat is important to you? What are you holding back from doing because life is too busy? Gettysburg Fest wants to help you answer those questions. Based on an experiment in New Orleans that has taken hold and swept around the world, you will find two chalk board walls at the Fest, where you can reflect, contemplate and answer the questions: “Before I die I want to ______” and, “When I grow up, I want to _______.” Take a minute to join in this celebration of stories while you’re at Gettysburg Fest.

Everybody needs a good laugh. And, Gettysburg Fest doesn’t want to disap-point! Partnering with sponsor, Steven B. Wiley and the Lincoln Leadership Institute, Laughing With Lincoln brings back three Gettysburg College alumnus for a one-night-only special event.

Ritch Shydner (’74) has written and per-formed comedy for more than 30 years.

He’s made numerous appearances on “The Tonight Show” with both Johnny Carson and Jay Leno, “Late Night with David Letterman,” and a half-hour HBO special, “One Night Only.” He played Al Bundy’s co-worker on “Married with Children,” has made guest appearances on many other TV shows, such as “Designing Women” and “Roseanne” as well as appearing on the big screen in movies such as “Roxanne” and “Beverly Hills II.” In ad-dition to his own stand-up and acting, he has also written for many “A-list” comedians, including Jeff Foxworthy, Ron White, and Jay Leno.

When not performing, Shydner has spent time researching President Abra-ham Lincoln’s use and appreciation of humor.

“Abraham Lincoln was noted for having a great sense of humor and a quick wit. Senator Robert Dole listed him as the wittiest president in American history and the movie, ‘Lincoln’,” showed flashes of his humor,” explained Shydner. The President was a fan of Artemus Ward, the world’s first stand-up comedian and Lincoln’s often-recounted sense of humor freed the nation to laugh occasionally in the darkest of times.”

Charlie Gaeta (’99) has been a comic in New York City since graduating col-lege in 1999. He has performed in the New York Friars Club Roast and writ-

ten for “Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update” and “National Lampoon.”

“I moved to NYC after graduating and started doing comedy before I even had an apartment,” Gaeta said. “I was an English major at Gettysburg Col-lege and fell in love with the sublime humor in Richard the Third. When I showed up at the SAE house with a limp and a hump, cursing in iambic pentameter, the laughter was addictive.”

Camillo “Cam” Melchiorre (’75) has a law degree and is now the head of Hope Loan Port based in Baltimore, MD. He has spent several years in vari-ous roles in the mortgage banking industry. But, in his days at Gettysburg College, he had his sights set on being a comedian.

“Similar to my keen observations about Shakespeare, I recognized that mortgage finance was rife with comedy. I mean, wasn’t the mortgage finance collapse in 2009 a real gas,” joked Melchiorre about his change of course.

“Cam’s greatest contribution to comedy was his dancing,” added Shydner, who attended Gettysburg College with Melchiorre. “I dubbed it ‘The Mad Dog,’ and did it in 1992 on ‘The Arsenio Hall Show’ to laughter and ap-plause. I’ll do it again in Gettysburg.”

Laughing With Lincoln will have two shows at the Kline Theater on the Col-lege campus Friday, June 13; the 6:00 show will be PG, with an R-rated 18+ version at 8:30. Tickets are $17.50 and $28.00, and can be purchased through www.gettysburgfestival.org or at the theater box office.

A well-loved tradition of Gettysburg Fest is the Fringe. But, what exactly is the Fringe? And, why does it seem like a second festival that’s going on at the same time as Gettysburg Fest?

To answer those questions, let’s look at a bit of Fringe history…

It all started in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1947. A number of perform-ing artists who were not official participants of the Edinburgh International Festival decided to produce their own work in empty stores and church basements. Their work was staged literally “on the fringe” of the established festival. The concept was an immediate success and the Fringe soon became as – if not more – popular as the “official” Edinburgh Festival. The Edinburgh Fringe is the largest festival in the world and Europe’s #1 tourist destination.

Following the example of the Edinburgh Fringe, other Fringe Festi-vals sprang up in Europe, North America, Australia and Asia in the following decades, many of which follow the true Fringe philoso-phy – to provide artists with the opportunity to show their work in an uncensored and unjuried environment and to give 100% of ticket sales back to them.

Like fringe festivals throughout the world, the Gettysburg Fest Fringe is an open community cultural experience. Part of the larger Gettysburg Fest, the Fringe is designed to provide the opportunity for every artist, writer, performer, cultural organization, historical venue, church and business in Gettysburg and the regional area to present their event.

Celebrating American arts, culture and cuisine against the historic backdrop of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, Gettysburg Fest Fringe is committed to the community. This cultural tourism initiative

provides access to the arts to inspire, entertain and educate the public. To fulfill its mission, the Gettysburg Fest Fringe team is also committed in providing a showcase for the hundreds of artists and regional cultural organizations in our area.

For 2014, we are proud to have ACNB Bank on board as a spon-sor of the Gettysburg Fest Fringe. Twenty-five area organizations have joined with us to provide activities to enjoy the entire week-end. Events range from A Victorian Tea to Children’s Theater to a Motorcyle Show and Fundraiser for Make A Wish Foundation to a Mamie Eisenhower 50’s Luncheon to a Father’s Day BBQ and so much more… including art exhibits, performances and special deals at participating businesses.

For a full schedule of Gettysburg Fest Fringe events, visit www.gettysburgfestival.org. Some events are free, while others are ticketed; All run concurrent with Gettysburg Fest June 11-15th and are located throughout Gettysburg. While you’re around town, keep an eye out for the Fringe Flags (and offer a ‘thank you’ to ACNB Bank)!

The Family Celebration Presented by PNC Grow Up Great and WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital promises to excite, entertain and educate everyone in your family—from toddlers to teens and even parents. The events of this special day Saturday, June 14 begin at 10:00am and run to 4:00pm

The Gettysburg Fest has always been “family friendly,” offer-ing engaging, entertaining and educational activities for kids of all ages. This year however, we are offering a day packed full of programs for kids “make and take” art projects, an opportunity to trade their artwork with others, and showcase their talent in a gallery environment—just like the professional artists!

Visual arts are in focus, including two NEW student art exhibits in the Musselman Library. One show offers students the opportu-nity to compete exhibit and even sell their artwork! The Historic Gettysburg-Adams County “Barn Art” show is an expansion of the same show featuring adult artists—the only criterion is the subject must be an historic barn located within the county.

Another NEW art program for the entire family is the Artist Trad-ing Card presented by the Adams County Community Founda-tion. This multi-generational program invites artists of all ages to create a set of 10-12 original baseball card-sized artworks to bring to a trading event with fellow-artists. The exchange is scheduled for 1 pm on Saturday, June 14 near the Family Tent. Artists will also have an opportunity to use supplies available on campus earlier that day (10 am until 1 pm) to create cards at the same site as the trading event.

The “Children’s Carnival of the Arts” – an emphasis on Venice in celebration—features masks painted on children’s faces, or they can decorate a mask to hold, adorn pre-made figures to take home, dress in costume and become part of the masquerade. Pho-tos will be taken amid floating bubbles. Gondola rides in a canal of balloons for children 3 to 5 years. Sidewalk chalk art.

Nationally renowned artists and authors featured during the weekend at the Lord Nelson’s “History Meets the Arts” in the College Union Building will be presenting brief programs and demonstrations as a teaser to their full programs. They will be on the half-hour from 10:00am through 2:00pm on the Troegs Independent Stage.

Entertainment will take center stage throughout the festival ven-

ue. Kicking off the day chock full of music of every ilk is a series of traditional, patriotic brass band performances. A different band will take the stage hourly throughout the day on the XFINITY Stage. From noon to 2:00pm, Kennie’s Markets will enhance your enjoyment of the brass bands with an Old Fashioned Pie and Ice Cream Social for the first 200 guests.

The Fitzgerald Auto Malls Main Stage wakes up early when the Gettysburg Community Theatre Presents “American Pop Forever”—a show featuring music of the Rockin’ 50′s to Ameri-can Bandstand to Disco 70′s and even hits from GLEE! High energy vocals and choreography!

The energy remains high when the The Gettysburg Civic Chorus sings “Songs of the Soul”. With the ninety-voice strong chorus, they have been delighting audiences since it was founded in 1963. This enthusiastic band of singers is led by professional director, Tom Kittinger, and accompanist, Sharon Hedges.

Our friends in the culinary arts will not be left out either! Gettys-burg is known for some really fabulous dining. Serving all of the tasty culinary creations are some of the best servers in the busi-ness, too. Our fun obstacle course will challenge each participant as we determine which waiter-waitress team is the best in the Gettysburg region! The winning team will get a very cool travel-ing trophy to be displayed in the winning restaurant for a year! Come out to cheer on YOUR favorite restaurant server team!

UNITED WAY OF ADAMS COUNTYWELCOMES YOU TO THE GETTYSBURG FEST!

Enjoy the performances and stop by theChalkboards envisioned by our own Vickie Corbett!

Good things happen when visual and culi-nary creations are combined! That is exactly what we have planned with the “new and improved” twist on the always popular Ed-ible Art Tour for 2014. This year, all five of the visual art gallery spaces on the Gettysburg College campus are stops on the tour!

Regardless of where you begin your tour, you will experience a mouth-watering and visually stimulating evening. From 5:00 to 8:00pm, some of the most exciting chefs representing top Gettys-burg-area dining establishments will demonstrate how cuisine can be both a visual and a culinary delight!

• Schmucker Gallery: Adams County Arts Council Juried Art Show, featuring Chef Joseph Holmes of One Lincoln at Gettys-burg Hotel

• Norris Wachob Alumni House: The Gettysburg Fest’s Plein Air Art Show, featuring a dozen artists and the Civil War-themed menu prepared by Chef Alexander Slagle of the Historic Farn-sworth House Inn

• Musselman Library: Historic Gettysburg-Adams County Stu-dent Barn Art and Looking Towards Abstraction Youth Art Show, featuring an “Alice in Wonderland” themed dessert showcase by Chef Ed Weikert of the Eisenhower Complex

• College Union Ballroom: Lord Nelson’s History Meets the Arts featuring a double treat with Chef Claude Rodier of the 1863

Restaurant & Lounge (Wyndham Gettys-burg) and Chef Charle Kalathas of C&D Bar & Grill in New Oxford

• Gettysburg Fest Wine Tent: Quick Draw Competition artists and their entries, featuring the Blue Parrot Bistro

You will be able to see some of the most exciting art, created by artists from Gettysburg and across the U.S. Meet and greet the artists-- and discuss techniques and their inspiration for featured pieces. Whether you are a foodie or an art enthusiast, this is a truly once-a-year opportunity not to be missed!

This is a ticketed fundraising event, with all proceeds benefitting Gettysburg Festival, Inc. Tickets are $38.50 and offers guests unlimited sampling and entry to all five galleries.
