Burbank Middle School - The School to Watch Luther Burbank Middle School is one of seven middle schools across California to be se-
lected as model middle schools in the 2014-2015 Schools to Watch-Taking Center Stage Pro-
gram. “Burbank Middle School is blazing a path of success and achievement. The Highland Park
community and the parents, students, and employees of Burbank Middle School have much to
be proud of; I am honored to stand with them and celebrate this recognition of excellence,”
said Board Member Kayser.
Schools must have met or exceeded the Academic Performance Index (API) school wide
growth target three out of the five most recent years. School administrators then must con-
duct a self-study evaluation and complete an extensive narrative application; the final stage of
the process has a team of middle school experts review the site. Congratulations!!

Juniors and seniors in the WeSave Club at Eagle Rock Junior/Senior High School worked close-
ly with LAUSD’s Maintenance and Operations team and Board Member Kayser’s office to help restore
the school’s quad with new grass. The students of WeSave researched and participated in the step-by-
step process from start to finish. The club members developed a plan that looked into the pre-
treatment of the soil, the type of sod that would be more suitable, and on their free time during the
weekend they helped install the sod. Later this year, the students will present their research and work
for a science competition. The initiative, leadership and teamwork the students of WeSave at Eagle
Rock Junior/Senior High School took to begin and complete the project is something to be proud of.
