THE BENEFITS OF AN ENERGY EFFICIENT &
CARBON NEUTRAL WINERY
ALISDAIR TULLOCH
KEITH TULLOCH WINE, HUNTER VALLEY
ABOUT
• Keith Tulloch Wine founded in 1998
by Keith & Amanda Tulloch
• Primary operations are grape
growing, winemaking, warehousing,
sales & events
• Grape crush 120-150 tons per harvest
(once annually)
• Original carbon footprint 660 tons
carbon dioxide equivalents per
annum
• Carbon neutral since March 2019
• Climate Active certified by the
Australian government
EMISSIONS
• The most significant onsite emissions
came from electricity for wine
production, warehouses & sales, (145
tons CO2-e).
• Other significant emissions included
in our carbon footprint included
couriers/postage (200 tons CO2-e)
and the purchase of glass bottles (50
tons CO2-e).
• When emissions can no longer be
reduced with current technology,
offsets (carbon credits) are purchased
to eliminate the gap.
SOLAR POWER
• In 2018 we assessed and then commissioned the construction of a 65kw ground mounted solar PV array
• The ground mount was more expensive upfront, but with a near-identical ROI and more substantial long-term savings on CO2-e & electricity costs
• With current electricity use, panels provide coverage of 72%
• 33% of generated electricity exported to grid
• Size of array reflects high load during harvest
Electricity use such as
machinery, air conditioning and
refrigeration can be optimized
for use during maximum
power output
Optimizing power use and
investing in electrification
creates further long-term
savings (e.g. Electric vehicles
and forklift)
SOLAR POWER
• Electricity savings are only part of the
picture
• With Solar PV, electricity is our own
resource and is generated on
property
• Solar can be installed for business to
operate off-grid
• Our business is protected from ever-
increasing electricity price rises and
Australian energy uncertainty
• Emissions reductions are a vital part
of our carbon neutral product
SUSTAINABILITY
• The Harvard Business Review
reported that from 2013 to 2019
“products marketed as sustainable
grew 5.6 times faster than those that
were not”
• The Nielson Report reported in
September 2018 that “The majority
(73%) of consumers say they would
definitely or probably change their
consumption habits to reduce their
impact on the environment.”
