The medieval romance Sir Gawain and the Green Knight begins with a memorable

scene: the Knight challenges anyone in Arthur’s court to behead him, on condition

that he may return the blow in a year’s time. Both the reader and Sir Gawain must

struggle to make sense of this offer, and it can be understood by applying game

theoretical methods to draw a parallel with children’s games of daring. The game

theory approach helps clarify some elements that have not been discussed in the

critical literature, and also some plot differences between the poem and its ancestor,

the Old Irish Bricriu’s Feast. Game theory complements linguistic methods for

analyzing literary plots, and it may clarify other parts of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, especially the manipulation of the rules of politeness and gift-giving.

One fairly common way to attack a problem involves collecting data and then

making a set of statistical assumptions about the process which generated the data -

for example, linear regression with normal errors, conditional independence of cate-

gorical data given covariates, random censoring of observations, independence of

competing hazards.

Once the assumptions are in place, the model is fitted to the data, and quite intri-

cate statistical calculations may come into play - three-stage least squares, penalized

maximum likelihood, second-order efficiency, and so on. The statistical inferences

sometimes lead to rather strong empirical claims about structure and causality.

Typically, the assumptions in a statistical model are quite hard to prove or dis-

prove and little effort is spent in that direction. The strength of empirical claims

made on the basis of such modeling therefore does not derive from the solidity of

the assumptions. Equally, these beliefs cannot be justified by the complexity of the

calculations. Success in controlling observable phenomena is a relevant argument,

but one that is seldom made.

These observations lead to uncomfortable questions: Are the models helpful? Is

it possible to differentiate between successful and unsuccessful uses of the models?

How can the models be tested and evaluated? Regression models have been used on

social science data at least since 1899, so it may be time to ask these questions; but

please do not expect definitive answers.
