Same as last year's event, Europe on Screen 2013 will screen recent films with high entertaining value. It is still a common perception in Indonesia that European films are made for art houses; difficult films with slow pace and open endings, and that it is not for the general public’s consumption. The films selected by the festival programmers will prove this otherwise.

There will be around 60 films screened in the festival this year. As an addition from last year’s festival, Europe on Screen 2013 will have screenings, not only in Jakarta, but also several other cities in Indonesia. In cooperation with Institut Français-Indonesia, the audiences in Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Bandung, Medan and Denpasar will be able to attend a number of film screenings during the festival period.

For the third consecutive year, Europe on Screen Short Film Competition will also be held this year. Submissions were opened on February 1 and will be closed on March 18. This competition is open to all Indonesian filmmakers, fiction or documentary, in Indonesia and abroad. The main prize this year, a HD Video Camera, will be given to the best film, selected by an international jury, on the closing ceremony. Also

this year, with the support of SAE Institute Jakarta, the eligible entries can compete for a Scholarship Challenge Program to win a full scholarship for a three-year film production program from SAE Institute Jakarta.

Other than the film screenings and competition, Europe on Screen 2013 will have a number of fringe events in Jakarta, such as film discussions, seminars / workshops, and open air screenings.

VENUESThe films will be screened in four European cultural centres in Jakarta, which are Erasmus Huis (Dutch cultural centre), Institut Français-Indonesia Salemba (French cultural centre), Goethe Haus (German cultural centre) and Istituto Italiano di Cultura (Italian cultural centre). The film screenings outside Jakarta will be held in the local French cultural centres (Institut-Français-Indonesia).

The fringe events (discussion, seminar/workshop) will be held in the multifunction hall of SAE Institute Jakarta, in the fX building, Senayan area; while the open air screenings will be held in the Taman Ismail Marzuki, Plaza Senayan or the Epicentrum Walk, Kuningan.

Wednesday March 20Monday March 18

Bloc Party emerged with a sound and attitude that built on the fashionable retro art-rock coming from acts ranging from New York City’s The Strokes to Scotland’s Franz Ferdinand of the mid-2000’s. But while Bloc Party’s particular sound and angular music fitted the music of that moment, frontman Kele Okereke gave the band an individuality above the rest. With a voice that conjures the cockiness of the Fall’s Mark E. Smith, the twitchiness of the Voidoids’ Richard Hell and the anguish of the Cure’s Robert Smith, Okereke and company created an urgent new punk rock for the disaffected emo crowd. The band’s second album, A Weekend in the City, released in 2007, shot to Number One on the Independent Albums chart and Number 12 on the Billboard 200. In 2012, they released their fourth album, Four. Bloc Party have sold two million albums worldwide and this is the first time they will play live in Jakarta.

DADANG "POHON TUA" PRANOTO

What music are you into at the moment?I’m currently in love with The Flying Club Cup by Beirut, Rolling Through This World by Bob Brozman and Jeff Lang with Angus Diggs, and of course, Soundgarden’s King Animal!

What was the first record you bought—any interesting story behind it?It was Semut Hitam, the third album of God Bless. Back then, 1988, I was still in primary school (I’m not sure what grade). I bought the cassette using my pocket money plus the money I made from watching over my auntie’s baby. I remember that night clearly (and shamelessly) because my dad took me to the record store and I insisted to him that the name of the band was Semut Hitam. Since that night, I’ve had nothing but respect for God Bless. … who would’ve thought, 20 years after that “Semut Hitam” moment, I would share the stage with God Bless...

What are your all-time favorite albums? Why?Soundgarden’s Superunknown: As a rock musician, a grunge worshipper, this album is like a bible. Every texture in the album is filled graciously by the band’s personnel. Throughout my career with Navicula, I’ve continued to utilise Superunknown as a guitar reference for each of our studio albums.Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon: This album

has become my benchmark in understanding and appreciating silence within noise. You don’t need to worry about any prediction in the art of sound, Pink Floyd have taught us the beauty of exploring the uncertainty in music.Bob Dylan’s Self Portrait: Does anybody dare to challenge him?Tom Waits’s Swordfishtrombones: This album effectively works to build my confidence, as a strong mantra to make me forget about my diffidence. You just go out and sing, just do it.Eddie Vedder’s Into the Wild: This is the album which inspired me to form the folk band, Dialog Dini Hari. Beck’s Guero and Radiohead’s OK Computer: These albums are genius; a bit too genius! They have the potential to make me feel stupid, like I’m nobody in comparison to such forward thinking albums.

What was the worst record you ever purchased?I’ve never purchased a bad record. I don’t buy albums that I’m not interested in.

Who do you want to be, other than yourself, next time you reincarnate?I just want to be me. But if I really had to choose my next lifetime, next time I would have to choose…

DOMESTIC GROOVECElEb'S CHOSEN NINE

Having rocked Record Plant in Los Angeles, Navicula are soon to release their eighth album. In the meantime, he’s been writing the musical score for Richard Oh’s next movie, ensuring that his electronic music side-project Saman is all go. And Dialog Dini Hari? You’d better watch out for their fourth album; it’s coming soon!

P.S Dialog Dini Hari are also getting ready to tour Java in early March alongside White Shoes and The Couples Company.

What book are you reading now and what’s the score (1-10)? History of God by Karen Amstrong. Score: 8

What new movie should people see? Why?People should watch Looper (Bruce Willis, Joseph Gordon-Levitt). What a twisted sci-fi film! It has an unpredictable ending and is full of valuable messages.

What album do you choose to start your weekend?Dave Matthews Band’s Everyday.

And a song/album to end your weekend with?Ali Farka Touré’s The River.

A s widely predicted, Argo, the hostage-rescue drama with witty dialogue won the Best Picture award at this year’s Oscars.

As it is a film with a feel-good ending, many would argue that its uplifting flavour is just what we need in these uncertain times – in contrast to last year’s nostalgic winner, the black-and-white silent movie The Artist. When First Lady Michelle Obama, live from the White House, appeared in a surprise double act with Jack Nicholson to announce the Best Picture nominees and winner, she commented that a common thread linking all of them was the importance of finding the courage to believe in ourselves.

She might well have added that many of the real-life stories associated with the films were as dramatic, if not more so, than the stories they portrayed. In Zero Dark Thirty, an account of the manhunt for Al Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden based on a true story but with fictionalised passages added, the single-minded determination of a CIA operative over the course of a decade produces the desired result in the end. However, given the degree of risk that the raid on Bin Laden’s Pakistan hideout posed, it required a courageous decision by Michelle’s husband as US president and final decision maker to order the ultimate go-ahead for the raid.

Believing in OurselvesThis year’s Oscars show that life is

often more dramatic than art

Argo, a nail-biter liberally peppered with comic moments, portrayed the self-belief of a CIA operative working in conjunction with the Canadian government to facilitate the escape of six US hostages from Tehran during the 1979 Iran hostage crisis. Like Zero Dark Thirty, the film has been criticised for the way it mixes truth with fiction for dramatic purposes, particularly for not giving sufficient credit to Canada for the success of the mission.

The real-life story behind the film is that director and co-producer Ben Affleck has endured a series of box-office failures in recent years and his commitment to Argo was a demonstration of his refusal to allow his own self-confidence to be destroyed. The Best Picture win was a bittersweet victory for Affleck, for the film is one of few in

Hollywood history that did not win its director an Oscar at the same time. Amour, a film in French about a couple’s love and devotion set against a background of aging and death, did not win Best Picture but was hailed Best Foreign Language Film. The female

lead, Emmanuelle Riva, was nominated for Best Actress. Celebrating her 86th birthday on the night of the ceremony, she would have been the oldest recipient of the award in this category had she won.

The film’s aging theme is universal, for it’s something that affects all of us – should we survive that long – and its portrayal of the husband’s unflinching devotion to his wife is a remarkable testament to the resilience of the human spirit.

Another Best Picture nominee was Lincoln, which portrays the last four months of US President Abraham Lincoln’s life when he was trying to win political support for the abolition of slavery. However, it has also been criticised for its historical inaccuracies.

Even so, it has an intriguing contemporary resonance: It illustrates the political guile that the president had to resort to and the self-belief to persevere when congress was not necessarily on his side. Where have we heard that before?

Although it did not win Best Picture, the real-life drama lay in Daniel Day-Lewis winning Best Actor for his portrayal of Lincoln. It was a historic win, making him the only person ever to win three best actor Oscars.

Whilst most, if not all, of us will never be in the running for an Oscar, we can nonetheless draw consolation and strength that the courage to believe in ourselves will keep us going in both good times and bad. (Jim Read)

What is the name of your new album? The album is called All Night.

What’s the album about? What style of music?Mostly about love, it’s inspired from my own personal experiences. The style of the new album is pop, RnB and dance with some rock elements too. It’s mostly inspired by Rihanna, and a little bit by Beyoncé and Armin Van Buuren.

Did you write the music and lyrics? Or who does? Yes I do normally write all the music and the lyrics. Except for “All Night”. I wrote that together with Albert Rosenbrand. I will put an all new album snippet on my Soundcloud and my Youtube.

You raised the funding to make the album online. What do you want to do with the record after it is released? Each of the people contributing on the project will get different incentives. From album downloads to a free live session. So I will take care of that and then put my album for sale on Itunes, CD Baby, Amazon, and Multiply and probably in other platforms.

In order to promote it, I am preparing another funding project on IndieGoGo to raise money to make my first solo video clip. From there I will continue building my fan base by being involved in events and projects. I will also approach music labels in Indonesia. And lets not forget the most important thing, I’ll be making music.

Harlan :

JAJAN ROCK

Salah satu veteran skena alternatif Jakarta, Harlan, datang kembali mewarnai blantika musik lewat Jajan Rock.

Jakarta’s infamous veteran of indie, Harlan, has returned. Consisting of four songs, Harlan’s latest offering to the scene, Jajan Rock, was released this past February. And, of these, “Klaten”, turned out to be a Gribs cover, which is a move attributed to the immense respect he has for the themes, lyrics and attitudes of the retro rock group. Don’t be thinking it’s an ordinary, run of the mill, tone-for-tone cover, cause this one isn’t an ordinary do-over. Harlan’s version is straight up folk, folks. Indeed, folk is the predominant genre represented throughout his entire album, like a straight up injection of folky goodness.

Released under the keen eye of Rain Dogs Records this album is a quick off the mark follow up to Sakit Generik which hit the stores back in November 2012. But wait, there’s more, we have it on good authority that a third mini album is planned for release soon after Jajan Rock. And then, this Harlan trilogy shall be completed by way of a full-length album, due out in late 2013.

If you fancy your folk and have found yourself missing this local troubadour, take a visit to raindogsrecords.com to keep updated on what’s what with Harlan. Oh, and whilst there, buy his albums.

Since the beginning of time it appears the region of Israel and Palestine has always been racked

with conflict. For decades, it seems we only hear about conflict, incidents and struggles. However life as we know it is continuing and so are the lives of Palestinians. From beneath the apparent drama the people and country are suffering, Palestine surprised the world by debuting their country’s first national orchestra ever on New Year’s Day in 2011 in Ramallah and guess what? This orchestra is coming to Jakarta…

The Palestine National Orchestra was founded thanks to an initiative of the Edward Said National Conservatory of Music (the foundation is named after the late Palestinian writer and academic). More than 40 Palestinian and foreign musicians, drawn from the leading orchestras around the world, gathered and formed what is the first Palestinian orchestra since 1948. Suhail Khoury, the director of Edward Said National Conservatory of Music, introduced their first performance with the words: “Today an orchestra, tomorrow a state. Today we are witnessing the birth of the Palestine National Orchestra at a time when the Palestinian struggle for independence is passing through one of its most critical and difficult moments.”

Australian conductor: Matthew Coorey was chosen to conduct the orchestra on their first tour ever to Indonesia. He began conducting in 2002 and is an award-winning conductor who has been leading some of best orchestras in the world such as the London Philharmonic, The Seattle Symphony, Sydney Symphony and Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. He will conduct The Palestinian National Orchestra together with a few of the world’s great soloists such as Syrian clarinet player KinanAzmeh, Lebanese flutist WissamBoustany, Palestinian American violinist Charlie Bisharat and Palestinian Japanese soprano Mariam Tamari.

For this tour, the orchestra has chosen some interesting programs that include Mozart’s Symphony No. 41 and his aria: Martern Aller Arten from Die Entfuhrungausdem Serail as well as Rossini’s aria: Non si da Follia Maggiore from Il Turco in Italia; and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7. The “virtuoso” Syrian clarinet soloist Kinan Azmeh will play his own composition called “Wedding”. And like Azmeh, the famous Lebanese flutist: Wissam Boustany will also play his own solo composition called “And the Wind Whispered” without orchestra accompaniment.

Surely this rare performance is definitely not to be missed. Even yours truly here has already booked a couple of tickets for this (going to be) amazing concert.

“Right then,” says marketing executive #1 (possibly called Brad) whilst shuffling some papers around on his big mahogany desk, “what next?” “Taylor Swift. Album four,” answers marketing executive #2 (possibly called AJ). “Hmm ok,” ponders Brad, “let’s make this quick. Collaborations. Who’s that dude from Ireland who writes those songs they always play at emotional moments on the X-Factor. Y’know, the one from Snowy Patrol.” “Gary Lightbody” answers AJ. “Yes him! Get him. And while you’re at it, get the ginger Brit I saw earlier playing guitar in studio 6.”“Ed Sheeran?” “Yep, that’ll play well with the fans in Englandshire. BOOM! That’s two tracks done right there.”

“What else is hot right now?” continues Brad. “Dubstep?” proffers AJ. “YES! Make her do a dubstep song.” “But, isn’t she a country singer living in Nashville?” “Who cares, we’ll call it a new musical direction. Now what about the rest?” “Actually”, interjects AJ “she writes her own stuff.” “PERFECT! Good job man, let’s go grab a skinny latte.”

Now I’m no expert, but I wouldn’t be surprised if that was exactly how it all went down for Taylor Swift’s fourth studio album – the unimaginatively titled Red. Those not familiar with the indisputably lovely 24-year-old from Pennsylvania may well have dismissed her as another talentless muppet with a nice voice, but Swift takes an admirably large chunk of the writing credit on Red (10 out of the 16 songs), displaying a lyrical maturity well ahead of her peers. “Here we are again/in the middle of the night/dancing around the kitchen in the refrigerator light,” she sings sweetly on the beautiful “All too well.” Aww. Smiley face. “Almost Do”, “Sad, Beautiful, Tragic” and “The Lucky One” are similarly charming ballads that further showcase Swift’s obvious gift for writing and melody.

Conversely, the tracks where she shares writing credits with an assortment of others such as the album’s lead single, “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” (like, EVAR), the above mentioned duets (“The Last Time”, “Everything Has Changed”), and most notably the dubstep faff of “I Knew You Were Trouble”, pale in comparison to her own songs, with that forced, ‘new direction’ feel.

Female listeners under the age of 18 who are chiefly concerned with the business of:1)chasing, 2) dating, or 3)breaking up with boys, will totally dig all of “Red”, but I just wish the meddling marketing dudes would butt out and let her get on with it, as there is a deserved talent under all this begging to be nurtured, and not, as Brad and AJ would have it, spoon fed.

This film is adapted from the novel of the same name. Pat Jr. (Bradley Cooper, The Hangover franchise) has just been released from a mental health institution after his bipolar disorder can now be treated at home. One day, during a dinner at a friend’s house, Pat meets his friend’s sister-in-law, Tiffany Maxwell (Jennifer Lawrence, The Hunger Games), which also has the mental problem – neuroses. Elements of comedy and romance between the protagonists throughout the film made it a strong contender during the awards season, including a win for Jennifer Lawrence. Critics have warmly received this touching story of love between two flawed characters. Expect some laughs and a lot of sentimentality.

Film ini dibuat serupa dengan novel Cogan’s Trade karya George V. Higgins. Tampaknya, Brad Pitt cocok dengan peran baik maupun peran jahat. Film bergenre mafia dan perampokan seperti ini memang spesialisasi nya Andrew Dominik, setelah sukses dengan The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford pada tahun 2007.

Neo-noir, Crime, Thriller. Director: Andrew Dominik. Writer: Andrew Dominik (Screenplay), George V. Higgins (Novel).

Cast: Brad Pitt, Richard Jenkins, James Gandolfini, Ray Liotta, Scoot McNairy, Ben Mendelsohn, Vincent Curatola, Slaine.

The main character here, Jackie Cogan (Brad Pitt, Inglourious Basterds), a hitman, is hired by Driver (Richard Jenkins, The Visitor) – a mafia emissary, to murder Markie Trattman (Ray Liotta), Squirrel (Vincent Curatola), Frankie (Scoot McNairy) and Russell (Ben Mendelsohn) due to their heist of a mob poker game. This film was based on Cogan’s Trade, a novel by George V. Higgins. This movie features a dynamic Pitt who is able to play both hero or villain. Expect multiple intertwining subplots, the usual criminal characters, and extremely well written dialog.

Horror, Mystery, Thriller. Director: Scott Derrickson. Writer: C. Robert Cargill, Scott Derrickson. Cast: Ethan Hawke,

Juliet Rylance, Fred Thompson, James Ransone, Clare Foley, Michael Hall D’Addario.

This found footage horror film follows the story of Ellison Oswalt (Ethan Hawke), a true crime writer, who finds a box of snuff movies that puts his entire family in danger from supernatural beings. The story is about a family moving into a house that was the scene of grisly murders. Sounds familiar? Are kids involved? Yes. Demonic figures? Check. Paranormal events? Check. The difference between this film and the numerous other found footage horror flicks out there where a family moves into a new haunted house is that Sinister had generally positive reviews. So if you want to traumatize your kids for all eternity, bring them to this film and tell them bad things are going to happen to them if they don’t do what you tell them to.

Zombie Comedy, Horror, Romance. Director: Jonathan Levine. Writer: Jonathan Levine (Screenplay), Isaac Marion (Novel). Cast: Nicholas Hoult, Teresa Palmer, Rob Corddry, Dave Franco, Analeigh Tipton, Cory Hardrict, John Malkovich.

A very bizarre zombie named R (Nicholas Hoult, About a Boy) lives in a city teeming with zombies. When R and the zombie packs are about to scavenge for food (human flesh), especially human brains, they accidentally meet Julie Grigio (Teresa Palmer) and a few more humans who are also looking for food. R falls for Julie at first sight. This story depicts the other side of the zombie realm, where not all zombies are cruel, some are good-hearted. Expect R and his friends to interact with the humans. This movie vividly tells a love story between the undead and a girl. Expect some hilarious necrophilia and all the hallmarks of a zombie movie. This just could be the first romantic zombie movie to ever make its way to the big screen, so also expect for this flick to defy convention.

NEW ON THE BLOCkAndrew Coleman is the new general manager

at Liquid Exchange and he is definitely bringing a new exuberance and vitality to

the popular Epicentrum restaurant and bar. The Beat Jakarta took a moment over beers to find out more about this charming young man.

Where are you from and how long have you been in Jakarta? I’m from Australia originally, and have lived in Jakarta twice, first in ‘97, and so far have been here in total 4 years, 2.5 years this time.

What kind of experience do you have in F&B? I helped run a bar in Beijing for some time, and was more recently a part of a bar in Kemang but jumped at the opportunity to run LEX given the huge potential. This place has to be one of the hottest spots in Jakarta.

What are you going to bring to the table (so to speak) at Liquid Exchange? What’s new? I’ve started a few new initiatives such as monthly Chef Specials for new menu options which we will take the top picks from over time to create a favourites list, which we will use to add to our full menu. Also we will be introducing a Sunday Brunch focused towards family time with games, entertainment, face painting along with an array of international and Indonesian food. I’ve also started a cocktails/shooters promotion based on the Champions League with each remaining team getting a signature drink such as the Bayern Munich cocktail made by our awesome head bartender Slamat, which is quickly becoming a guest favourite. I’ve been adjusting some small details of the full menu to breathe new life into an already popular menu. And one of the most important changes is bringing in some new bands for our new Ladies Night on Wednesdays and for our busy Saturdays, still complimented by fantastic band, Icons, on Friday night.

What do you do in your spare time in the capital? My hobbies are watching movies either DVD or cinema, training in Mixed Martial Arts, reading quietly alone or just hanging with friends enjoying a laugh.

What are your favorites places to hangout at night around Jakarta (besides your own place of course)? I enjoy Aphrodite to watch sport and play billiards a lot but also I enjoy chilling in Ancol because it feels like an escape from the hustle and bustle of Jakarta.

If you were talking to a new-comer to the city, what word of warning would you give him or her? Don’t stay too long otherwise you’ll be hooked forever! Ha ha, no really, this city is one of the best kept secrets to live in. Once you get over the traffic and pollution, which is typical in any major city as I’ve experienced living in London and Beijing.

If you could sum Jakarta up in one sentence, what would it be? There’s no other place like the Big Durian, love it here and I’ve met some of the best people I know in this city, which I’ll forever be thankful for.

For the longest time Kemang has been the area of choice for foreigners to reside, and with that came many bars and restaurants catering

to the expat lifestyle. In a matter of no time Kemang became the place for the local crowd too to experience authentic international foods that are not found elsewhere in town, such as a good tabouli or humus. As Kemang’s entertainment scene became ever more popular, new venues popped up and at one point the area was overrun by similar-looking venues that offered a similar-looking experience. To appeal to the masses, many of the venues went into price wars, offering cheap booze and extended happy hours. The method actually worked to draw in hordes of punters, but no longer was it the expats coming, but barely legal local teenagers (famously called “ABGs”) scoring affordable tequila shots. The rule of the TexT: Darren Dylan

ABGs marked Kemang’s (first) reincarnation which happened in the early 2000s. And although Kemang preserved its privilege as the expat area, some felt Kemang had lost its appeal and sophistication as it became the destination for rowdy and ignorant teenagers to spend their weekends.

In the past few years, the winds are changing again in Kemang. The area right now is going through its second reincarnation as it is becoming the hangout block for Jakarta’s local yuppie crowd. New venues in Kemang are hip and sophisticated, gunning for a customer to spend around 200k to 250k per visit. The cheap booze gimmick is slowly losing its appeal, and establishments now focus their energy on taste and experience. One testament of Kemang’s second reincarnation is Jalan Kemang Taman 1. Just a half year ago this road was dead on the entertainment side and was predominately office space. Now this road houses a number of posh venues that recently opened up, with Porsches and Range Rovers filling up the impromptu parking spaces taking up the rather dim-lit street. From

beers at Beer Buddy, dinner in Parc 19, live music in Umbra, patrons can casually bar-hop around the half dozen venues here as each place has its own vibe and persona.

Although the “cheap bars” still abound, Kemang is currently going through the second reincarnation has already elevated the area’s reputation; it’s cool again to be in Kemang! The wave of new venues has given the established venues a run for their money, and in an attempt to maintain their relevancy, comes bolder renovations. One in particular is The Edge restaurant in Kemang Icon hotel. Management hired a new executive chef, decked the kitchen with new equipment, and most importantly put extra effort in spicing up the rooftop venue.

The second reincarnation is not defined by the incoming yuppies, but more importantly, the single, unified identity of Kemang has been abolished. The area now caters to both patrons on a budget and the fat-wallet types, all staying true to its familiarity as the expat central.

Stripe overload never looked this good before. Who says that too much of something is bad? This campaign says it all. We need as much stripes as possible in our wardrobe this season. It also makes me want to sail away to the blue ocean and enjoy my life.

The Spring 2013 campaign from Tommy Hilfiger paints a picture of diverse eclectic characters and takes them to the high seas. The all-American family image is of course still very vividly portrayed in the campaign. By the way, the brand also includes a digital webisode with this campaign where Estelle’s “Do My Thing” is played, featuring Janelle Monáe. The webisode since has been online since January 28 at www.tommy.com/bonvoyage. Open the website and you can also view a lot of chic and preppy nautical inspired looks. Don’t

blame me if after you take a peek of the site you find yourself running to the nearest Tommy Hilfiger store to rope up some nautical pieces.

By the way, if you’re a fan or follower of Tommy Hilfiger, by answering the question “What’s your thing for 2013″ and using #doyourthinghashtag, you will receive a free download of Estelle’s “Do My Thing” track which is featured in the Tommy Hilfiger campaign.

Have you noticed that stripes are making a strong presence this season? Seeing the new campaign for Spring 2013, Tommy Hilfiger is

making me lust over stripes even more! Take a look at these images and tell me that you aren’t feeling the same.

If there’s one tool that I can’t live without, it’s the mighty but small tweezers. I always travel with them because having well-groomed eyebrows is my top priority. When

my eyebrows look neat, they frame the whole face and define my facial features. That’s why I always rely on tweezers to save the day.

The first reason of why you need to invest in a pair of good tweezers is because it’s so important. I always make it a point to find good tweezers. Not only that, once you find the tweezers, you’ll stick by them for years to come. I don’t think there’s any situation where your tweezers will become unusable anymore. For as long as I remember, I have never really replaced my tweezers because they stopped working. If you get good quality tweezers, they should last for a really long time. I usually replace them only after losing them, being so small, it’s really hard to keep track of where they are.

Secondly a good pair of tweezers will easy grip on even the finest eyebrow strands you have. I don’t like being frustrated because there’s this one very fine strand that I can’t pluck out. It’s like an itch you can’t scratch!

Thirdly because tweezers with a good grip will ease the job of plucking your eyebrows and won’t slip. With poorly made tweezers oftentimes we have to tweeze four or five times to get only one single strand. Frustrating, I know!

Fourth, it will help with even the most difficult corner of your hair or even the most difficult angle.

Now that I got my criteria all laid out, what’s my favourite tweezers?

Of course it’s none other than Tweezerman. It’s so iconic and well-known that every time you want to look for tweezers, you know that the best is this one. The only thing about these tweezers, that they’re way more expensive than your regular ones. But trust me, when you can keep one for over a year, it’s worth every penny for saving you a couple of minutes every time you tweeze your eyebrows.

Tweezerman is even said to be the “little black dress of beauty tools”. The slant tweezers live up to its name and creates the benchmark standard for every tweezer brand out there. It’s the choice for world-renowned makeup artists with its 25 degree angle on its slant, giving you precision when tweezing your eyebrows.

What I love about it is that they even came up with a limited edition tweezer that has cute patterns, albeit more expensive than the normal ones, this one costs me almost double at 260k. But the pattern is just too cute.

C’s Steak & Seafood Restaurant at Grand Hyatt Jakarta is excited to showcase Norwegian Salmon from 18 to 24 March 2013, prepared by the restaurant’s own Norwegian Executive Sous Chef, Christer Foldnes.

Chef Christer, who is from Bergen, Norway, has crafted a number of appetizers and main courses. To start: Smoked Salmon and Citrus Cured Salmon, Smoked Salmon Devilled Egg with Capers, Dill, and Honey-Mustard Dressing; Spiced Salmon Pate with Salmon Caviar, Fennel Salad, Pickled Cucumber and Homemade Fennel Seed Cracker; and Salmon Chowder with Carrot, Leek, Onion, Croutons, Horseradish Crème.

For mains: Pesto Baked Salmon Papillote with Lemon, New Potatoes, Caper Berries, and Sour Cream; Smoked Salmon Risotto and Seaweed, Salmon Caviar, Crispy Salmon Skin; and Pan Fried Salmon Chop with Green Beans, Cherry Tomatoes, Artichokes and Smoked Chili Hollandaise.

Chef Christer recommends a taste of in-house Smoked Salmon and Citrus Cured Salmon, Smoked Salmon Devilled Egg with Capers, Dill and Honey-Mustard Dressing. “It’s a great way to eat salmon. The smoked salmon gives you a taste of the fatty salmon with a smoky flavor to balance.

The cured salmon is marinated with salt and sugar and that gives it a pleasant saltiness balanced with sweetness. Capers, dill and honey-mustard dressing

are Scandinavian condiments for salmon so this would be a very traditional way to eat it in Norway.” explains Chef Christer. For the main course Chef Christer highlights the Pan Fried Salmon Chop with Green Beans, Cherry Tomatoes, Artichokes and Smoked Chili Hollandaise. This is a very light dish, healthy and great for ladies. The salmon is crusted with chopped hazelnut and then pan fried. The hazelnut gives the salmon a crispy golden brown outside and a great texture. It is served with a warm ‘salad’ of green beans, cherry tomatoes and artichokes and a spicy hollandaise sauce.

Norwegian Salmon is good for you.Norwegian Salmon is known scientifically as “salar” (Atlantic salmon). Norway is the world’s largest producer of Atlantic Salmon. Norway farms about 570,000 tonnes per year out of a total world production of 1.25 billion tonnes. (www.norwegiansalmon.com) Atlantic salmon is known as the “king of fish,” an appropriate title for many reasons. Atlantic salmon make an epic journey during their lifetime, migrating from the fresh water streams of their youth to feeding grounds in the North Atlantic Ocean and back again to spawn. Their capacity to return back to the same stream where they were hatched has captivated and mystified biologists for hundreds of years. Salmon are among the most beautiful of fish; stream-lined, silver and graceful. They are powerful, too, among the greatest fighters in the fishing world. Perhaps most important of all, Atlantic salmon are a symbol of clean, unspoiled waters that run wild to the sea.

When you walk into some restaurants you know you are walking into something special. Others you walk in and you don’t

really get it. La Luce is all of the above at the same time, for the moment anyway. You see, they have a delay of sorts with the 18 Parc building construction where the restaurant is located in the SCBD and the front entrance isn’t supposed to be exactly where it is now. The entrance you greet now is supposed to be the entrance to the building and they are supposed to have a garden space facing the restaurant across to the left but it isn’t ready just yet. When I walked in for the first time I thought the dessert cart next to the front door was the reception desk until a waiter served a piece of cake from it. You see, it’s all a bit complicated but once you are in the restaurant proper, it’s really something else, something special.

I love fine-dining restaurants; full of creativity and passion in every dish, and the service is both attentive and informed in taking care of guests like they are their personal butlers. La Luce has all this, but according to Italian chef Alessandro de Boni, previously from Mulia and who heads the kitchen, it’s not meant to be a fine-dining restaurant. It’s supposed to be a bit more casual than that, but they don’t do a very good job of disguising it. The food is excellently made from the freshest ingredients, mainly local since the government has decided to disrupt the import of most foods recently. This policy has most top restaurants pulling out their collective hair trying to find adequate local replacements and Alessandro’s doing the same. It’s the freshest ingredients and creative recipes that sets La Luce apart from the Jakarta pack of dining bistros.

They have an excellent menu of Italian dishes ranging from appetizers, pizza and pasta; to main courses and desserts. All of these dishes are presented exquisitely. Since my partner that evening didn’t eat meat, and to tell you the truth, I eat less and less too, we chose a selection of appetizers that included Carpaccio Salmon (125K), Baby Squid (95K), Diver Sea Scallops (220K) and a pasta dish, Tonnarelli (180K). These dishes all came out one by one and every taste was savoured to the last morsel, stunningly presented and cooked to perfection. There are plenty of choices available for all kinds of palettes across the expansive menu at La Luce. We washed these dishes down with glasses of Banfi red and white wine (90K).

The decor at La Luce could be called modern Italian and would feel right in just about any capital around the world. The restaurant design

was created by Sammy Hendramianto of design firm Gracipta Hadiprana. The design of the cubicle tables in particular are clever with glass separations between each meaning the tight space of the restaurant is fully utilized and guests don’t pay the price of losing their intimacy. For more privacy though, there are two private dining rooms for guests of up to 20 people.

Overall La Luce is a magnificent restaurant and just the way I like them―a bit flashy and intimate with great service and excellent food. The entrance will be fixed soon and the outdoor garden area will be a great addition, but for now, La Luce is still a fine Italian restaurant and a great place to dine. Give it a try.

Good things come in small packages, and this tiny eatery is a proof of that. Since opening seven months or so ago, Noi (which means

‘us’ in Italian) Pizza has become a new favorite place for Italian food lovers, particularly in the south of Jakarta.

You could say that the location of Noi Pizza is partly hidden, nestled at one edge of Pondok Indah residential area. Parking is a bit scarce, but it doesn’t deter patrons from visiting. This restaurant is a labor of love for Kevin, a former employee at an advertising agency. With help from his mother, he turned his family’s old house into a very inviting restaurant.

oNoi Pizza

In his younger years, Kevin had lived in England and his affinity for that country is clearly showing in the décor of Noi Pizza. There is plenty of English paraphernalia around. Being the house it once was, when you come into the restaurant, you feel like walking into a flat or a small house in London or somewhere in England. To use the word ‘homey’ is an understatement. There’s a patio in the front, should you feel like dining alfresco and inside you’ll find a living room, a dining room, and a working kitchen, just like a proper living quarter.

Make no mistake; the food here is focused on Italian fare. The signature dish is the pizza, of course. But what’s unique about it is the dough. Instead of the

one we’re usually familiar with, the pizza dough here has a very thin, biscuit-like texture. A nice twist of the old favorite.

The Il Migliore Pizza (55k for large, 33k for small) is their most popular dish; a delicious mix of smoked beef, minced beef, green and red pepper, mushroom, tomato sauce, mozzarella and cheddar cheese. There’s nothing like the taste of fresh, homemade pizza to brighten up your day. There’s also a choice of the Vegetariano (50k for large, 30k for small) pizza; chock full of green and red pepper, mushroom, sweet corn, broccoli, tomato sauce, mozzarella and cheddar cheese.

Apart from the pizzas, the pasta dishes here are also noteworthy. The Spaghetti Bolognese (30k) is always a crowd’s favorite, and there’s also the Tuna Spaghetti (35k) for you looking for a bit of seafood. But our favorite is the Spaghetti Aglio Olio (30k). This is a dish just exploding with flavors; a mouth-

watering blend of the pasta with red and green peppers, mushroom, smoked beef, and bursting with intense pepper and garlic zest. It’s a definite must try!

The Strip Loin Steak (65k) is a newer dish at Noi Pizza; 150 grams of succulent Australian beef smothered in barbecue sauce, served with potato wedges, and sautéed vegetables. The steak has become a new favorite of the loyal patrons here.

The homemade Strawberry Mousse or the Chocolate Mousse (15k each) will provide a sweet end to your meal. Careful, they’re so scrumptious you just have to taste both!

Noi Pizza is a very homey and welcoming eatery that’s certainly worth a visit. Although small in size, it’s already making quite a big buzz among Jakarta’s food lovers and we’ll be waiting for more delectable dishes to come! (Budi Iskandar)

BifStop started out in early 2011 with their first outlet in the suburb of Bintaro. Their second outlet opened last August on Jalan

K. H. Ahmad Dahlan, about a stone’s throw away from Mayestik shopping area and that’s where we visited them just a couple weeks ago. The interior is kept simple; it's a no-frills kind of steak joint which focuses, rightly, on the food. Yes, the steaks are the main attraction here, but there are plenty of other dishes worthy of your attention too.

Let’s begin with the appetizers. We ordered the Mexican Nachos (46k); the popular dish is full of fried corn tortillas, smothered with cheese sauce, beef chili con carne, and a side of tomato salsa. We gotta say, nice work on the homemade salsa; it really takes the dish to another level!

The Mushroom Fritters (28.5k) also made it to our table. The deep fried mushrooms with crusted chili flakes are served with tartar sauce. Both are superb opening acts to the main course. Carnivores, brace yourselves!

First up was the Australian Angus Sirloin (88k); 200 grams of juicy prime cut Australian sirloin, served with butter coated fries, and a side salad. Next, the “Bif” Back Ribs (69k); 500 grams of 12-hour braised Australian beef ribs doused with homemade BBQ sauce, served with butter coated fries and a side salad. The meats were really done right and grilled to perfection.

For these steak dishes, BifStop came up with four homemade choices of sauce: Fiery Black Pepper, Bif Signature BBQ Sauce, Mellow Mushroom Medley, or Herbal Fusion Butter. Try them all, and see which one is your favorite!

The Australian Angus Beef and Cheese Burger (42.5k) is another winner here at BifStop; homemade beef patties with 80% lean meat and 20% fat, with cheddar cheese, served on a sesame seed bun, plus butter coated fries and side salad.

BifStop really knows how to treat the meat. Other than Australian meats, they also have a New Zealand beef. The NZ Rib Eye (68k) is a great choice. Oh, and one more thing, the butter coated fries are a nice touch, which we totally like!

Other than the steaks, the “Bif” Bowl (38.5k) is a popular choice among patrons here, especially

with the lunch crowd. It’s easy to see why; the US beef short plate is on steamed rice with mushroom and topped with poached egg. It’ll give Yoshinoya a run for their money.

If you’re more up for a fish dish, go for the Dory Fish and Chips (39k). And if you’re in the mood for sausages, then the Grilled Bockwurst Beef Sausages (52k) is the dish for you.

Make sure that you have room for the dessert. Famous celebrity chef Bara Patiradjawane provided BifStop with three scrumptious choices: the Panna Cotta Chocolate and the Panna Cotta Tiramisu (17.5k each), and our runaway favorite, the Panna Cotta Strawberry Yoghurt (20k). BifStop is a great place to enjoy quality steak (and other delectable dishes) without really breaking your bank. This could be the next popular place for Jakarta’s foodies. (Budi Iskandar)

From the people that brought you Murphy’s in Kemang, comes another gem from the Emerald Isle. Located right behind

Plaza Senayan, Molly Malone’s first opened last September. Typical Irish green exterior bids you welcome, while dark wood dominates the interior. Pictures and souvenirs from Ireland adorn the walls, adding authentic touches.

On our recent visit, we were greeted by the manager, Trevor Hough. He was delighted to announce that they serve Guinness on tap. For quite a while, it was not easy to get kegs of this popular dry stout directly from Ireland. But now Jakarta can enjoy this ‘nectar of the gods’ which originates from St. James’s Gate, Dublin. They also have Kilkenny, another Irish beer, on tap here.

With his distinct Irish accent, Hough told us a little bit about the famous story of Molly Malone. The story may be fact or fiction, but it is now a popular name for a lot of Irish pubs. There seems to be a Molly Malone’s in many major cities all over the world.

A pint of Guinness started our evening on the right note and a couple of appetizers were ordered, and devoured in minutes! We had the tasty Irish Style Potato Skins (55k); oven roasted potato skins loaded with cheddar cheese and crispy beef bacon bits, and sprinkled with fresh chives. For a more traditional fries-cut potato, try the mouth

watering Poutine (45k), which is smothered in rich gravy and freshly grated cheese.

For the main course, you just can’t go wrong with the Fish N Chips (70k). The fillet of red snapper is encrusted in a light crispy batter (made with Kilkenny beer), served with hand-cut chips, green peas, plus homemade tartar sauce and mustard-mayo mix. Simple, yet sublime!

Another remarkable dish here is the Beef and Guinness Pie (110k). Made from a legendary, authentic Irish recipe, it is full of chunks of

succulent imported beef marinated overnight in Guinness stout, braised with fresh root vegetables and topped with a flaky pastry, and served with hand-cut chips.

The Molly’s Irish Stew (95k) was next on our table; a hearty traditional dish made with tender Australian lamb, slowly simmered (as long as six hours) with fresh potatoes and root vegetables, and accompanied by ‘boxty’ bread. This is a type of bread that has a unique texture and taste, courtesy of the bread potato hybridization.

Should you feel like having a breakfast dish at any time of day, you’ll love The Full Irish (90k); two fried eggs, pork sausages, smoked back bacon, grilled tomato half, mushrooms, Heinz baked beans, hash browns, boxty toast, and a choice of tea or coffee. A great way to start, or re-start, your day!

As for dessert, go for the Granny’s Apple Crumble (40k). Just like grandma used to make it, it's served hot with a dollop of sweetened cream and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Yummy!

Enjoy the food and have a pint or two at Molly Malone’s. The food here is wonderful, fresh, and made from scratch. Kudos to the kitchen team for bringing the taste of Ireland to Jakarta!

Anytime is a good time to visit, but for a full Irish experience in Jakarta, Hough reminded us to return here for the St. Patrick’s weekend on March 15 – 17! Sounds like a plan. Slainte (Good health)! (Budi Iskandar)

The MilestonePod connects to your running shoes to automatically and continuously track the miles on that shoe. This provides guidance for when to replace your shoes and avoid injury. It is typically recommended to run 400-600 miles on a pair of shoes. Running on overused shoes is known to increase the risk of injury (e.g. snapping hip syndome, iliotibial band syndrome, runners knee, and more) and yet there is no easy method connect miles to a specific shoe. The MilestonePod is a digital tag that stores health and emergency contact information. Unlike bracelets and anklets you never have to remember to put on the tag, you can change or update the information anytime and you can store as much information as you like - there is no limitation based on size. www.milestonepod.com

This streamlined cordless electrotherapy system delivers hours of drug-free pain relief from lower back pain. As powerful as professional equipment, the device employs Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS), harmless electrical pulses that block pain signals passing through nerves to the brain. The system also increases blood flow to the area to promote healing and relaxation. According to the American Physical Therapy Association, TENS therapy can be an effective element of pain management for low-intensity discomfort. The compact three-button remote control initiates a 30-minute treatment session, adjusts the intensity of stimulation, and powers off the unit. Unlike TENS systems with multiple electrode cords and tethered battery packs, this thin, flexible unit doesn’t impede movement, can be worn under clothing, and need not be removed between treatments. The adhesive electrode pads stay securely in place for up to five applications. www.hammacher.com$199.95

Ideal for viewing marine life or inspecting a boat below the waterline, the sub is tethered to its receiver on deck with a 100-foot video cable. Communicating with the receiver using Wi-Fi, an app installed onto an iPad or laptop remotely controls the sub’s electric thrust and lift propellers for forward/backward (five kts forward; one kt reverse), left/right, and up/down movement. A virtual dashboard (an iPad’s motion sensors can also steer the sub) includes a joystick, camera controls, and displays depth, heading, battery level, and temperature data received from the sub’s built-in sensors. Its marine-grade, hydrodynamic ABS housing provides a watertight seal to protect the included HD video camera, which captures 1280 x 720 resolution footage (1280 x 800 for still images).
