Although the police say that theyhave had some success during theprevious financial year, it does notappear as though the crime figureshave changed much over the lastmeasurement period. The national crime figures were

released on Tuesday, 29 September,by Nkosinathi Nhleko, the Ministerof Police, and Riah Phiyega, theNational Police Commissioner. Thefigures were calculated from caseswhich were reported and handled bythe police between April 2014 andMarch 2015.Sex-related crime, assault, arson,

burglary, the theft of motor vehicles, trade crime, transit robberies andbank robberies have apparentlydecreased nationwide. Howevermurder, attempted murder, assaultwith the intent to do serious harm, robbery, damage to property, theftfrom motor vehicles, cattle theft,drug-related crime and hijackingshave all gone up.In Limpopo all types of crime have

increased over the past term, exceptfor sex-related crimes, burglaries athomes, the possession of unlicensedfirearms and trade crime, which havedecreased slightly. In Bela-Bela assault, sex-related

crime, robberies, damage toproperty, burglaries from homes andburglaries at businesses haveincreased. In Mookgophong sex-related crime,

assault, arson, home invasions, theillegal possession of firearms, drunkdriving and robberies at businesseswere all found to be on the increase.According to the official figures it

appeared as though The BEAT’sreaders’ area experienced no theft ofmotor vehicles or cattle theft duringthe term. The South African Police Service,

however, found that the figuresrelating to cattle theft, hijackings andtheft of motor vehicles were a resultof a technical error. At Bela-Bela 42 cases of theft of

motor vehicles and 18 cattle theftcases were reported. In the previousfinancial year 42 theft of motorvehicle cases and 30 cattle theftcases were investigated, according tothe adjusted figures.

Members of the Democratic Alliance fromthe national, provincial, district and localoffices recently visited Raeleng SecondarySchool recently to donate toiletries andreusable sanitary towels to female learners.

The visit was conducted as part of theDA’s ongoing campaign to ensure thatfemale learners remain in school evenduring their menstrual days. The mainconcern is that girl learners miss about 55days of school because they are tooembarrassed to go while they aremenstruating, or simply cannot affordsanitary towels. The event was held underthe theme “Women are the real architects ofsociety”, a quote from an Americanmusician known as Cher.

The DA’s Deputy Federal ChairpersonDesiree van der Walt and nationalspokesperson Refilwe N’tseke leddignitaries from various provinciallegislatures and local and districtmunicipalities at the event, with parents andschool management and governing bodyalso in attendance. Raeleng’s Grade 8 to 11learners received motivational talks fromdifferent speakers; and goodie hampersamong others which included the sanitarytowels which last for five years.

In his welcome address, Raeleng principalJoseph Mashishi highlighted that the schoolis a public venue for all organisations whoneed to hold their gatherings, especially

those involving the learners. He added thatit does not matter what organisation, department or political party. Only themessage for the children, he says, isimportant.

Member of the Limpopo ProvincialLegislature and Shadow Minister onWomen Denise Robinson outlined the role

of the DA’s Women’s Network (DAWN),addressing the learners on what it means tobe a woman and roles and responsibilitieswomen have in their communities.N’tseke addressed them on education and

life in women’s world, bullying at schooland the National School NutritionProgramme, encouraging them never to be

ashamed of being poor. She also quoted thelate president Nelson Mandela when he saidthat “education is the most powerfulweapon one can use to change the world”,adding that girls need to get propereducation to better their lives and that oftheir loved ones and communities. She alsospoke about children who are living inplaces of safety, saying that the places donot often provide the girls with all theyneed including emotional support.Meanwhile, Sue Barnes of Project Dignity

addressed the learners on the “Keep a girlin school” programme, giving out presentsduring her interaction with them. She taughtthem about puberty, menstruation and sex.The learners showed off their talents and

rendered poems in line with Women’sMonth and the role that president Mandelaplayed in women’s lives. All the speakersacknowledged the teachers and the schoolmanagement team for their efforts inmaking sure that the learners acquirerelevant skills to better their future and stayfocused on their studies.Van der Walt acknowledged one of the DA

councillors David Senosha’s invite to visitthe school. Senosha expressed concern onthe way that some parts of life or naturalproblems affect the lives of girls, some ofwhom are forced to stay out of schoolduring their time of the month, and thoughtthat they needed assistance. He added thatlearners from disadvantaged familybackgrounds need some sort of assistanceto also be made to feel normal andwelcomed in the society.Matilda van der Merwe assisted with some

of the hampers that were distributed to thelearners, adding items that are a necessity togirl children.
