Congratulations to July Grads
Continued on P. 2
Congratulations to the Class of July 2014, who graduat-ed on Wednesday, July 23. Participating in commence-ment were: Heather Gad-dis, Auto Technology; Sa-vannah McNally, Hotel and Hospitality; and Joseph Bland, Diana Garcia, Shakira Jackson, Sabrina McLeod, Cala Repaci and Mohamed Tarawaly, Office Admin-istration. Heather Gaddis and Shakira Jackson were the student speakers. Their advice in-cluded encouragement and continued pursuit of goals for fellow students, and
gratitude for friendships. Cala Rapaci performed a beautiful rendition of the “Star Spangled Banner,” and Joe Bland, SGA President, led the Pledge of Allegiance. The graduates and student body were given a dose of reality from guest speaker, Elizabeth Woodring of Bloomsburg, Senior Human Resources Director at JDK Management. Ms. Woodring noted that she has 20 years of experience in the Human Resources field and hiring new employees. She provided the students with a list of “do’s and don’ts” while job searching, and tips for becoming a good employee. Ms. Woodring emphasized attitude, appropriate and neat clothing, following up on the job application, taking another position to get your foot in the door, following the rules, and marketing themselves as keys to obtaining a job in addition to their skills training and resumes.

A big welcome to Jill Brightbill, administrative
assistant to state Rep. Tina Pickett, and her hus-
band, Marty, who stopped by today for a Center
tour. Jill, along with BCL Jackie Johnson was instru-
mental in organizing the Pennsylvania Job Corps
Day held at the State Capitol in Harrisburg last Oc-
tober.
The Brightbills toured the Auto Technology, Auto
Collision Repair and Carpentry vocations. Marty
was interested in the Carpentry shop because he is
a carpenter by trade. Additionally, the couple was
also shown a dorm room.
The Center is within the 110th Legislative District
which is represented by Ms. Pickett of Wysox
(Bradford County), PA.

HSOL Instructor Shares Green Thumb High School Online instructor, Brent Fedder of Berwick has invited his students to share his green
thumb. Brent was recently given permission to plant a small “block garden” in one of the Center’s many
field areas with the assistance of some interested students.
The group meets from 5-7 p.m. Wednesdays—weather permitting to tend the garden. Brent explains
that the group discusses tips and techniques for producing a better harvest such as the use of a handful
of Epson salts in the tomato plant hole. The method is supposed to help ripen the entire tomato,
especially underneath where it tends to stay green. They also check the plants for any blight or insect
damage, etc.
The students planted 31 tomato plants including Roma and Amish Paste. They also planted pumpkins,
watermelons, okra and Kohlrabi. The gardeners intend to eat the “fruits of their labor” and also donate
the remaining vegetables to the Berwick Salvation Army Soup Kitchen, where Brent is a volunteer.
Brent Feder discusses the garden with students,
from left, Karlos Nelson and Lloyd Bucher. At left,
Brent is shown with the gardening group, from

Sissoko and Karlos Nelson.
Female Students Learn to Shop Wisely
CPP 2 instructor, Trish Young, and CPP 3
instructor, Jessica Conaway took some of the
Center’s ladies shopping on Thursday. How-
ever, the trip wasn’t an ordinary shopping
spree, but a lesson in thriftiness and empow-
erment.
Miss Trish said that although there are a
number of charitable programs out there to
assist young people with career clothing, etc.,
the CPP staff thought it would be a great
lesson to show the ladies that they can pur-
chase a fashionable and appropriate work
outfit with less money on their own. At left,
“They just have to look around and know
what to buy and stay within their budget. We
wanted to show them that you can look really
great in clothing that isn’t expensive.,” she
said.
From left, Armanee Kraft, Shanta Sims, Aleisa Greer and Dujunna
Williams look over some accessories.

HISTORIC WBL PARTNERSHIP
Woodstock Landscaping students Raymond Philbrick and Shawn Fury
recently started work on the renovation of a historic Maryland landmark near
the Center. The students are restoring the Cherry Hill African Union
Methodist Church in Granite, MD. The church was built in 1887 and will be
converted into a museum upon completion.
THE INTERNSHIP
Treasure Island students Annatasia Boyd and Justin Marion appear to be
enjoying their WBL internship at Google. Ms. Boyd, an Office
Administration student, is providing administrative support to Google’s
culinary department, including marketing the culinary options available across
the Google campus. Mr. Marion is showing off his culinary skills at the
Asian Café. While at Google, TI students get to utilize employee perks such
as free access to gourmet foods, sleeping pods for power naps and free fitness
classes. What about the glasses?!?!
SHRIVER’S GOING TO THE DOGS
Leave it to Worcester County Deputy (and Shriver Center Director)
Tamer Koheil to let a bunch of dogs run around campus. The Massachusetts
State Police K-9 Division is using the Shriver campus for regional K-9
training. MSP K-9 patrols are using Shriver’s warehouse as a training site for
their new German Shepherds. The K-9 team will train for the next few months
at Shriver and across Fort Devens before being used in the field in north
central Massachusetts. Of course, Safety and Security Manager Andrew
Kinuthia played a key role to set up the partnership.
GRAFTON’S CLASS REUNION
Grafton recently welcomed back graduates from the 1991-1993 era for a tour
of the Center. After connecting on Facebook, the Grafton alumni meet
annually to catch up on life events. This year, they decided to take a tour of
the campus. Alumni noted that the campus is entirely different from “back in
the day”, but as the picture below illustrates, it looks like they had a great time
on campus.
Editor’s Note: The editor apologizes for adding more consonants to RD Aneta Hrebenko’s name last week! He must
have been thinking of his favorite Minnesota Twins player Kent Hrbek! And it’s Deputy Secretary Christopher Lu!
