In making the preparations, the original flower arrangement I had in mind turned out to be vastly more expensive than my graduate student finances would allow. Thinking the restaurant I had in mind would have plenty of space, I neglected to make reservations. After all, every single time we’d been before, there would only be a handful of people. This night, however, we were turned aside because they had reached their capacity. The wait for our meal would be at least 2 hours. We ventured out in search of another place to dine, and the restaurant we picked was perfectly fine, but still didn’t match what I’d intended for the evening. Overall, the experience was enjoyable. It just hadn’t played out the way I’d intended. I had it all mapped out in my mind and wanted it to be … perfect. Some better planning on my part might have helped, I’ll admit. In the end, though, all of those things fell far down the list in comparison to simply sharing in the company of my wonderful wife. Valentine’s is upon us once again. Over the years, Susan and I have found that the best celebrations of this day don’t come from the expensive meals, the flowers, or any gifts, but from the great time spent in the company of the person you love. While I can remember the perils of that first Valentine’s, the best are the ones where we cooked at home and shared our meal quietly together, even without all the frills of décor and gifts. That stuff can be great, but ultimately it’s the love you share with another that makes the whole event meaningful. Many of you know when it comes to relationships it’s not always perfect and things don’t seem to work out sometimes, but in the end, the love among those involved is what makes it worthwhile. In faith, we often talk about the love of God, which is vitally important because scripture tells us in 1 John 4:8 that “God is love.” In verse 19 of that same chapter, it tells us “we love because he first loved us.” While our expressions of love might not always be perfect, we know that God’s love for us will be. Even through our flawed nature, God continues to love us with that unconditional love that looks beyond the blemishes to the true nature that resides within. In any shape, form, or fashion, we experience this type of love, with a spouse, family, or friends, and know that we share the capacity to love because God loves us. This year, when we’re looking for new ways to express love and devotion to someone so special in our lives, it can remind us as well to be thankful to the one who gives us the ability to love because he first loved us. —Trent Sessoms a monthly newsletter of a monthly newsletter of a monthly newsletter of a monthly newsletter of Knightdale Baptist Church Knightdale Baptist Church Knightdale Baptist Church Knightdale Baptist Church P1 A New Resolution P2 February Anniversaries and Birthdays P2 List of Deacons P2 Baptist Knights P2 Phone Tree P3 Love Connection P3 Children’s Worship Schedule for February P3 Children’s Message Schedule P3 Ushers for February P4 Spring Senior Adult Rally P4 Flower Calendar P4 Heck-Jones Offering P5 February Calendar P6 Youth Events P6 Senior Adult Valentine Banquet P6 Upward P7 Wednesday Night Fellowship Meal P7 When Christians Get It Wrong P7 Backpack Buddies P8 KBC Preschool Registration P8 Staff Volume 10, Issue 2 201 201 201 2013

True Love

My first Valentine’s as a married man occurred in 2008. Susan and I had been dating the previous year, but this one had to be special because it was our first as a newly married couple. In faith, we often talk about the love of God, which is vitally important because scripture tells us in 1 John 4:8 that “God is love.” In verse 19 of that same chapter, it tells us “we love because he first loved us.”

While our expressions of love might not always be perfect, we know that God’s love for us will be. Even through our flawed nature, God continues to love us with that unconditional love that looks beyond the blemishes to the true nature that resides within. In any shape, form, or fashion, we experience this type of love, with a spouse, family, or friends, and know that we share the capacity to love because God loves us. This year, when we’re looking for new ways to express love and devotion to someone so special in

our lives, it can remind us as well to be thankful to the one who gives us the ability to love because he first loved us.

The missions and ministries of WMU NC are made possible by your gifts to the Heck-Jones® Offering. Living the Story, based on Matthew 28:19-20, is the theme of the 2013 Heck-Jones® Offering. The scripture says, "Go out and train everyone you meet, far and near, in this way of life, marking them by baptism in the threefold name: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Then instruct them in the practice of all I have commanded

you. I'll be with you as you do this, day after day after day, right up to the end of the age." The week of prayer for Heck-Jones is February 11-17. We will collect your offering throughout the month of February. Look for the special Heck-Jones Offering envelopes.

Youth News

Over New Year's we went to Wellington to visit with the folks there and play bingo. The youth brought ample gifts to give away as prizes. It was encouraging to see some of our youth interact with the elderly folk there. They mixed and mingled to help make sure the bingo cards were attended to and kindly handed out gifts to each winner. Needless to say, Wellington wants us back soon. We are blessed to have the opportunity to minister to such thankful people. The Wednesday evening bible study has been faithfully going through the book of Hosea. I chose this book for a few reasons. First, it is one of those Old Testament books you don't hear about very much. Second, it deals with very difficult subjects that cause us to stop and appreciate the fact that God isn't only found in sunshine and rainbows. God is in the heartache and pain of life. I

believe it is crucial that our youth learn these lessons early in order to prepare them for future trials. For some of our youth, those trials are ones they are working through currently. God calls us to do hard things. He desperately wants His glory to be revealed in our lives and He will go great lengths towards that end. Even if it means heartache and pain. However, as Christians living this side of the cross we have the benefit of knowing that God is willing to endure this same pain and heartache. He is not numb to the difficulties of this life. He has known them very well. He has lived and walked a life of hardship from the cradle to the grave. And has given us hope as He came out victorious even over death itself. We are finished with the book of Hosea now. Ask some of our youth what the book is about. You may be surprised by their answer.
