Beatitudes for a time of pandemic

Blessed are the mask makers, for God prospers the work of their hands.

Blessed are the mask wearers, for God’s love shines through them.

Blessed are the caregivers and the helpers, for God is close to them.

Blessed are the teachers and the parents, for God will guide them through

uncharted waters.

Blessed are the weary, for God will sustain them with a word.

Blessed are the lonely and isolated, for God will never abandon them.

Blessed are the poor and the vulnerable, for they bear the image of God.

Blessed are the sick and the suffering, for God’s love surrounds them.

Blessed are those with special needs, for they are beautiful in God’s sight.

Blessed are the essential workers, for they reveal the face of God.

Blessed are the undercounted and unrepresented, for they are known to

God.

Blessed are the forgotten and the downtrodden, for they matter to God.

Blessed are the addicts, for God longs for their liberation.

Share the gospel, not the germs: COVID-19 Updates

Thank you, everyone for your patience, cooperation, and flexibility during this difficult time! Thank you for wearing

your masks/face coverings, maintaining physical distancing, and (perhaps most difficult of all) refraining from con-

gregational singing. We are making these small sacrifices out of love and care for one another!

Consistent with guidelines from the CDC, the ELCA, and local and state government, we plan to continue with in-

person worship and small group gatherings this fall, and will be transitioning to holding activities inside the church

building as the weather turns. As you are well aware, the pandemic situation remains fluid and uncertain. We will

adapt these plans as needed in order to keep everyone as safe as possible. For example, if our county were to

move back into a yellow or red phase (God forbid, but God only knows!), we would close the church building and

pivot back to online worship and virtual gatherings only.

That said, here are our current plans for worship:

We’ll continue outdoor services through September. In case of rain,

we’ll set up under the portico (that’s the covered walkway between the nar-

thex and fellowship entrances), and you can either join us there or listen in

from the parking lot in your vehicles at FM 97.7.

In October we plan to resume worship in the sanctuary. Safety proto-

cols will include the following: Seating in every other pew; hymnals, Bibles,

and cushions have been removed. Masks or other face covering required.

Maintain 6 ft. social distancing between family/household groups. No physi-

cal touching when greeting others, sharing the peace, etc.

We will continue recording one of the Sunday services and posting it online.

We will continue broadcasting the Sunday services on FM 97.7, so that those who prefer to stay in their vehi-

cles may do so.

If you’re sick, please stay home.

Wash hands frequently and well, and use hand sanitizer.

No congregational singing (alas!), due to the high risk of aerosol spread, even with masks. Services will in-

clude instrumental music and singing by cantors only. There is not yet a scientific consensus on whether con-

gregational humming is reasonably safe; my purely pastoral and personal view is that humming can be an ac-

ceptable compromise.

No passing the plate. Please place your offerings in the plate at the entrance to the worship area. You may

also continue to use automatic withdrawal or mail in your offerings to the church office.

We will continue using the individual pre-packaged “fellowship cups” for communion.

We will resume monthly healing services in September, with communion and healing prayer but without laying

on of hands and anointing.

Here are plans thus far for building usage other than worship:

The church office is open Monday-Thursday, 9:00-1:00. Please wear masks in the building and maintain physical

distancing. Only one visitor in the office at a time (two, if a couple coming in together). If there are multiple visitors

at once, some will be asked to wait in the narthex or in their vehicle.

Faith Lutheran Preschool will open after Labor Day, with various modifications and safety protocols in place.

Sunday Church School will begin with Rally Day on Sept. 13, and classes beginning on Sept. 20. Students and

teachers will be provided with face shields. Additional protocols will include physical distancing, individual supply

boxes, dancing and motions instead of singing, and pre-packaged snacks and drinks.

Bible study, book group, committee and council meetings, and other small church groups are encouraged to con-

tinue meeting outside while weather permits, but will be able to begin meeting indoors this fall, with masks and

physical distancing required. The same will apply to outside groups (Al-Anon, Daisies, Cub Scouts, Scouts) who

wish to use the building.

Each group who uses the building will need to sanitize their space after use. We’ll need to identify a representa-

tive or two from each group who can be responsible for this, and will schedule a training session for them. This

will apply to church groups as well as outside groups.

If you have questions, concerns, or suggestions regarding any of this, please share them! Please speak directly with

Pastor Jean, Becki our parish administrator, or any council member. This is all a work in progress, and we are all in

this together! Thank you!

Blessing of the Animals Service

Sunday, October 4, 2020, 2:00 p.m.

Calling all creatures great and small!

Everyone is welcome at this informal worship service of thanks

and praise! Animal blessings are traditionally celebrated on or

around October 4, the commemoration of St. Francis. Francis is

remembered as a gentle friend to all living creatures. Our service

will include scripture, song, and prayer for local animal rescue

and service organizations. Each animal in attendance will receive

an individual blessing. Light refreshments for humans and other

species will be provided.

A special offering will be taken to support the work of the Orphan

Angels Cat Sanctuary and Adoption Center.

We’ll gather on the lawn on the north side of the parking lot,

weather permitting. In case of rain, we’ll gather in the narthex and

under the portico. In case of rain, please bring indoor animals

only. Rain or shine, all animals must be appropriately leashed,

caged, or otherwise safely under control, and all humans in attendance must wear masks and observe social distanc-

ing.

Music Musings

The Christian faith is a singing faith. The restrictions that have been placed on churches during the Covid 19 pandemic go against everything we have learned as children through our life journey. As you know, it is tough to sit through a hymn or psalm without singing it or even humming it. Yes I understand why we have to not sing. Hopefully the day will come when we will again sing praises. What a “shout” that will be, “Alleluia”!

“Christian song is the overflow of the Christian heart.”

I would like to write a few quotes about one of my favorite hymns, “Joyful, Joy-ful, We Adore Thee” written by Henry van Dyke. 1852 - 1933. Music by Ludwig van Beethoven. 1770 – 1827. Van Dyke was a prolific writer with “Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee “one of his best known. He stated his purpose in writing it as follows:

“These verses are simple expressions of common Christian feeling and desires in this present time, hymns of today, that may be sung together by people who know the thought of the age, and are not afraid that any truth of science will destroy their religion or that any revolution on earth will overthrow the kingdom of heaven. Therefore this is a hymn of trust and hope.” Henry van Dyke

“Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee” portrays a joyful interplay between God’s created world and the manifestation of this same creative spirit in the life of the believer.” The hymnal is full of beautiful poetry telling us stories, feelings, pleadings and JOY, JOY, JOY. We may not be able to sing together at this time but grab a hymnal and read!

Rally Day—September 13, 9:00-10:00 a.m.

Children and parents/guardians—please join us as we begin the new year of Sun-

day Church School with Rally Day! We’ll gather under the picnic pavilion and have

outside games and activities, weather permitting. (In case of rain, we’ll meet in the fellow-

ship hall). We are looking forward to being able to meet and learn in person this fall!

Some things will be a little different (e.g. social distancing, personal supply kits, dancing

and motions instead of singing, face coverings, pre-packaged snacks and drinks) in order

to keep everyone as safe as possible. But it will still be great to be together and keep

learning more about our amazing God! We are also happy that Stephen Simmons will be

serving as our new SCS Director.

Reformation Weekend—Oct. 24-25: Youth members who have completed two years of confirmation ministry will affirm their baptisms in the Rite of Confirmation. Third graders will receive Bibles. We will celebrate Reformation as a (socially distanced) Youth Weekend, with children and youth serving as lectors, greeters, and in other worship leadership roles. If you would like to participate, please speak with SCS Director Stephen Simmons or with Pastor Jean.

First Communion Instruction:

If your family is interested in receiving instruction for First Communion, please contact Pastor

Jean. We hope to schedule another workshop this fall (in-person, virtual, or some combination

thereof).

Orientation Session—September 20, 9:00-10:00 a.m. All first-year and sec-

ond-year confirmands and their parents/guardians should plan on attending this intro-

ductory session with Pastor Jean. We will meet under the picnic pavilion, weather

permitting, or else in the sanctuary. To register, please contact the church office at

[email protected] or 899-9653 by Wednesday, September 16th. Please

contact Pastor Jean if you need a copy of the confirmation schedule and program

overview, or if you have questions or concerns about our confirmation ministry.

Class Schedule: Confirmation classes will meet with Pastor Jean. We hope to be able to hold in-person classes during the Sunday

School hour, 9:00-10:00 a.m., starting on October 4. We plan to meet in the sanctuary, so we can spread out.

Depending on the weather and the lesson we may also meet outside occasionally. If circumstances require, we

will pivot to meeting by Zoom, possibly at another time than Sunday mornings.

Here is the tentative schedule for the first few weeks:

Sept. 20: Orientation for first- and second-year confirmands and

parents/guardians.

Sept. 27: NO CLASS.

Oct. 4: Ten Commandments

Oct. 11: Ten Commandments, cont.

Oct. 18: Ten Commandments, cont. Plan to attend congregational meeting on

Oct. 17 or 18, following each worship service.

Oct. 25: NO CLASS. Plan to attend 10:00 worship to observe the Rite of

Confirmation.

Rite of Confirmation—Reformation Sunday, October 25, 10:00 a.m. These young people who have completed two years of confirmation ministry will be invited to affirm their baptis-

mal vows in the Rite of Confirmation: Emma Bablak, Dalton Lewis, and Anna McShane. Blessings and con-

gratulations! We are proud of you and give thanks for you all!

It’s back to school time for our preschool. This year will look a little

different due to the pandemic but our guiding principles will be safety,

education and fun! We have redesigned our classroom to allow for

social distancing and developed several new policies and procedures

to help keep us all safe. We also hope for some nice fall weather to

be able to take advantage of some outside learning time.

Our Tuesday/Thursday Preschool class is limited to 8 new smiling

faces to keep an emphasis on meeting each child’s personal develop-

mental needs and safety. Our Preschool program focuses on social,

self-help, fine and gross motor development along with basic cogni-

tive learning. Our Monday/Wednesday/Friday Pre-K class has 8 re-

turning students from last year’s preschool class and we welcome 5 new friends. The Pre-K program builds on

the above Preschool skills and provides more emphasis and advancement in cognitive learning. It has more

structure to better prepare the students for kindergarten and lays foundational classroom skills for their future ed-

ucation. In September we will focus learning new routines, making friends as well the popular autumn theme of

apples. We are looking forward to a fun fall at preschool!

Fall Congregational Meeting—October 17-18,

2020, following each worship service

Please plan to attend Faith’s annual fall congregational meeting. The

agenda will include a review of the preliminary budget for 2021, ap-

proval of capital improvement expenditures, and a final vote on the

congregational merger with Christ the Redeemer Lutheran Church.

Christ the Redeemer members, please plan to attend this important

congregational meeting, with the purpose of holding the final vote to

approve the congregational merger with Faith Lutheran Church.

Each congregation already voted unanimously in January to proceed with the merger; this second vote is constitu-

tionally required for the merger to become official and complete.

ANNUAL CHURCH PICNIC

This year’s picnic will take place on September 11th @ 6:00 sponsored

by the Social Ministry Committee. Because of Covid 19 we will provide

a boxed dinner for each attend. You will be able to choose a ham &

cheese sandwich or a turkey and cheese. You will have a choice of po-

tato or macaroni salad. Choice of drink. All meals will have a bag of

chips and a cookie.

There will be games for all ages and of course BINGO for valuable priz-es. Because of the pandemic we will need to remain socially distant and wear face mask when not eating. If it rains boxed dinners will be availa-ble for pick up at the church. If you want to attend please fill out the form at one of the three church services. Scholarship Opportunities: The Endowment Committee

would like to remind everyone that this is the first year that income from our fund shall be distributed. One area of distribution is for scholarships or grants to members of the congregation. These scholarships can be for are-as such as attending college, seminary, trade, nursing, or medical school along with church-related camping or leadership conferences. If you are interested in applying for these opportunities, the application can be found on the church website under Endowment Grant Application.

MOVIE NIGHT

On July 24, we celebrated Christmas in July with an outdoor movie night. Over 35 people of all ages enjoyed watching “The Star”.

SCS Angel Board Requests

Glue sticks, glitter, Ziploc sandwich and gallon bags, school plastic pencil boxes, pencil sharpeners, juice boxes and snack crackers (Ritz, Graham, Club, etc.), Christmas, Easter, and Valentine candy (as needed when holidays ap-proach), sanitizer (especially individual bottles that can be kept here for each child), Lysol wipes, paper towels and plates, bible coloring pages (for filling up any extra time at the end of lessons if needed), colorful Christian stickers, pencils, or coloring books that we can give to children on or around their birthday.
