FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH Volume 61 No. 1
January 2020
Dear Sisters and Brothers,
Even though Christmas is past I want to wish you a continuing Merry Christmas
throughout a very Happy New Year!
Life rushes by so fast that if we aren’t careful we find ourselves scratching our heads
wondering what happened as we fly into another new year. For example I distinctly
remember our firstborn in her crib knowing she would one day leave us. Now, twenty-
five years later Lidia has left to teach English in Taiwan for at least a year and I am
wondering what happened. Where did those twenty-five amazing years go?
I find in ministry that sometimes so much is going on, particularly in such a large, active
church as ours that it is so easy to get caught up in the landslide of the busy and urgent
that we forget about the BEST. I was reminded of this as Sandra, Nena, Rad and I
visited our Cuban brothers and sisters in November (which by the way seems at the
same time so long ago and like it happened yesterday).
Life is marked by our brothers and sisters in Cuba not by physical possession but by the
living, energizing, inspiring, sanctifying, emboldening presence of the Holy Spirit. Love,
joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness and self-control always
seem abundant in the church in Cuba. As one beloved brother told us in my words, “We
may not have any physical possessions and we may be considered poor by many but the
reality is that we are rich in the Spirit and that’s all we need!”
Part of their dependence in the Holy Spirit which is marked by this contagious, even
infectious joy is that they don’t allow life to rush them by. They don’t allow life to rush
them by because they put GOD first. I have been particularly convicted by their
practices of fasting. One brother told us of a group of pastors who start off each new
year by fasting to offer GOD the first fruits of this new year by offering themselves.
So, for me this year I am trying to build this in to my own life more intentionally.
Fasting has gotten a bit more challenging as I age but always blesses me and carries me
closer to the Throne of grace and glory. As 2020 draws near let us consider how we can
commit ourselves anew to GOD. How can we offer the first fruits of our lives to Jesus
throughout 2020. It may mean fasting food or computer or cell phone or television. John
Wesley used to fast from sundown on Thursday evenings until 3:00 p.m. on Friday
afternoon.
Let us choose what we will do to humble ourselves before GOD while praying for our
church, our nation, our world. Please let me know what you choose to do. I know it will
inspire me; you always do. Thank you. And as our brothers and sisters in Cuba always
say, “The best is yet to come!”
In the Amazing Love of Jesus Christ,
Brian
Church Staff
We always enjoy hanging out with our adopted Grandma, Ms. Erma Jean. She is so
amazing and fun to talk to. We weeded and trimmed her yard along with adding some
Christmas decorations. She also received a really soft blanket to keep her warm during the
holidays. She is so special to our group.
Thank you to all who participated in our annual Santa
Breakfast. We had Cindi Taylor, Jean Gifford, Tony Moens
and Linda Stassen in the kitchen, Lorena Carr as cashier and
Barbara Moens leading the craft center. We all know who
Santa was!!!! We gave out 39 goodie bags to children, saw a
family from Northport School and many from Ark Academy.
It was a very relaxed atmosphere where families enjoyed not
being rushed out. Gabriel Yanez completely enjoyed his mo-
ment with Santa. We earned around $350.
December wouldn’t be Christmas time without our annual Christmas Party!
We enjoyed lots of food, (because we are Methodist), and we played several minute
to win it games. They called them reindeer games. We then had a gift exchange with
lots of laughs. We ended our evening with reading the letters to Santa from our
breakfast. We prayed over the children and the youth each took a letter home to
pray for that child.
Debora Velasquez and Jessi Taylor graduated from IRSC on December 18th. I was honored
being their past youth leader to be asked to attend such an important moment in their life. Not
many times do we get to see the seeds that we plant grow into such beautiful flowers. These
two young ladies have blessed my life in such an awesome way. They have been part of
God’s plan in making me the person I am. They came into youth ministry as wonderful little
girls and left as amazing young women. I am so proud of where God has taken them and
allowed me to be part of their spiritual journey.
We are looking forward to where God will be taking us in 2020, and we go there with open minds and hearts to
receive the Holy Spirit and the adventures that await the youth ministry. Thank you for loving and supporting us in
2019, we are the luckiest youth group to be loved by our congregation.

As I stated previously, this year I will be highlighting a different subject section each month. This month is BIOGRAPHIES, which includes Autobiographies and Collective Biographies. (Collective Biographies are books with biographies of several people that have something in common.) This category is color coded fuchsia and is located at the very end of the shelving units. The biographies are in alphabetical order by the subject's last name. Collective Biographies are situated on the lowest shelf of this section. They are in alphabetical order by the author's last name. Some of the interesting people you can read about are: Jackie O, Tom Landry (2 books), Billy Graham (4 books), Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Todd Beamer, Jim Bakker, Peter Marshall, Betty Mahmoody, Queen Noor, Robert Schuller, Colin Powell, General Schwarzkopf and many more. Some of these great books will be on the table in the featured section. Don't forget to come to Room 106 and check out the wonderful Biography section.
Happy Reading, Carole Williams, Church Librarian
CHURCH GARDEN
The mission of the Church Garden is to grow delicious, nutritious, fresh herbs and
vegetables to support the feeding ministries of the church. The work of the garden will be
performed by volunteers from within the congregation, including the youth group. The
garden is located across the parking lot from the Beacon Life Center.
Bed number 2 is complete! It is put together just like bed number one. We have a
path between the two beds. We’ve added garden soil mix (the Jesus mix!), and our beds are already productive: they both
have produced a ton of weeds! After removing the weeds, we’ve planted our first plants and seeds! We have planted the
following plants: tomatoes, peppers, and collards. In addition, we have also planted the following seeds: kale, lettuce, onion,
oregano, parsley, radish, rosemary, and spinach. The radish and lettuce seeds have sprouted!
All are welcome to come visit the garden to marvel at what God has been able to accomplish. We also encourage
you to pray over the garden project, and pray for all of the people who will benefit from our efforts. All we ask is that during
your visit to please, please, please do not walk in the garden beds themselves.
With the approval of the Finance Committee, we are looking for sponsors to step out in faith and sponsor one square
foot of garden space for ten dollars ($10). You may sponsor more than one square foot if you feel led to do so. Donations
may be made by including it with your Sunday offering. Indicate on your envelope or your check how much is for your
offering and how much is for the garden. So far, we have 12 square feet of garden space sponsored.
Your sponsorship will provide for the initial supplies to create your square foot of garden bed and the initial planting
of herbs and/or vegetables. The garden beds themselves will consist of a mix of peat moss, vermiculite, manure, garden soil,
and various other soil amendments.
YOU DO NOT HAVE TO DO ANY GARDENING AT ALL!! We look forward to your prayerful consideration in support of this worthwhile ministry. Your support will feed the
hungry, provide the youth with an opportunity to serve, and help beautify the church grounds.
Thank you,
Rich Moran, United Methodist Men

Repeat Presentation
Do You Have a Legacy Plan in Place? When you pass on or become disabled, do your survivors know
your wishes for your funeral, where important legal documents are,
where your bank and investment accounts are, how the bills should
be paid, where your electronic passwords are stored, how your
property should be disposed of, what insurance you have, etc.?
If not, the FUMC United Methodist Men will be repeating an
introductory class on some suggestions of what you should have in
place in the event of such an occurrence. The class will be held on
Thursday, January 9th, at 1:00 pm in BLC 101, and is scheduled to
last for one hour.
Two members of the United Methodist Men have gone through and
documented the above for their loved ones. They will explain what
they have included in their Legacy Plan, and give you some steps
on how to get started with yours.
Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend.

I want to congratulate all of you who read through the Bible with me in 2019. Thank you for hanging in there with me. I know it wasn't easy. There were days, many more than one, when I found it challenging to write so I am deeply grateful for all who made the attempt. It is a great accomplishment! For 2020 I am planning on focusing on the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John as well as the Acts of the Apostles. We will read about 15 verses a day, Monday through Saturday, which should carry us through Acts. I invite you to join me beginning on January 1, 2020. Thank you. Blessings on you. Brian

Save those caps! Buddy Bench Program - the UMW is sponsoring the Northport K-8 School to get their very own Buddy Bench. Our congregation is saving bottle caps and lids that will be recycled into a bench for the school. What is a "Buddy Bench"? If a child feels lonely or sad he can sit on the bench and another student can sit with him and be his friend, a "Buddy Bench". UMW is paying for the transport of the bottle caps to the manufacturer, pressing the plastic into the bench and shipping the bench to the Northport K-8 School. We are all invited to the Ribbon Cutting in May/June.

Missions is God's work through us!
WORLD MISSIONS
MISSIONS is not an organizational task. Missions is a personal commitment that every believer
makes to be a part of fulfilling God's ultimate plan: that people from every tribe, tongue, people and
nation gather to worship at His throne. Basically, Missions is “Loving people and sharing Jesus with
those that are beyond our reach.” (Borrowed from: Global Church)
SCRIPTURE FOCUS "After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could count, from every nation and all tribes and
peoples and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb." Revelation 7:9

SIX KEYS TO OPEN THE DOOR TO MISSIONS
* KEY # 6: WHAT DOES NOT MOBILIZE GETS FOSSILIZED
Once the preparation is underway for the missionary team, the task of mobilizing the congregation begins. The mobilization, or
involving a church in the missionary movement are not achieved from one week to the next. It requires the process based on the
persevering commitment of those who carry it out. It implies: looking for the materials and elements needed to cultivate the
vision Among children, youth and adults. The initial result of this task is to awaken and form the vision in each group. One goal
would be to have a monthly meeting that focuses on missions. Many mobilizers agree that it is very difficult to meet with the
whole congregation for an extra meeting. As an alternative, it is suggested to dedicate one of the regular monthly meeting days.
For example: a missionary Sunday, it is advisable to start the formation of a publication - newsletter etc. - for the vision and
missionary action of the congregation. Also plan short term departures to provide missionary opportunities to teenagers, youth
and adults. Some missionary agency can help with this issue. For the experience to be meaningful, there needs to be
previous guidance and follow-up.

Las Misiones son la Obra de Dios
a través de nosotros
MISIONES MUNDIALES
Apocalipsis

Martin Luther King Day
Martin Luther King, Jr., was a great man
who worked for racial equality in the
United States of America. He was
born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta,
Georgia. Both his father and
grandfather were ministers. His mother
was a schoolteacher who taught him how
to read before he went to school. Young
Martin was an excellent student in
school.
After graduating from college and
getting married, Dr. King became a
minister and moved to Alabama. During
the 1950's, Dr. King became active in
the movement for civil rights and racial
equality. He participated in the
Montgomery, Alabama, bus boycott and
many other peaceful demonstrations
that protested the unfair treatment of
African-Americans. He won the Nobel
Peace Prize in 1964.
Dr. King was assassinated on April 4,
1968, in Memphis, Tennessee.
Commemorating the life of a
tremendously important leader, we
celebrate Martin Luther King Day each
year in January.
Many Christians make New Year’s resolutions to pray more, to read the Bible every day, and to attend church more regularly. These are fantastic goals. However, these New Year’s resolutions fail just as often as the non-spiritual resolutions, because there is no power in a New Year’s resolution. Resolving to start or stop doing a certain activity has no value unless you have the proper motivation for stopping or starting that activity. For example, why do you want to read the Bible every day? Is it to honor God and grow spiritually, or is it because you have just heard that it is a good thing to do? Why do you want to lose weight? Is it to honor God with your body, or is it for vanity, to honor yourself? Philippians 4:13 tells us, “I can do everything through Him who gives me strength.” John 15:5 declares, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” If God is the center of your New Year’s resolution, it has chance for success, depending on your commitment to it. If it is God’s will for something to be fulfilled, He will enable you to fulfill it. If a resolution is not God honoring and/or is not in agreement in God’s Word, we will not receive God’s help in fulfilling the resolution. So, what sort of New Year’s resolution should a Christian make? Here are some suggestions: 1) pray to the Lord for wisdom (James 1:5) in regards to what resolutions, if any, He would have you make; 2) pray for wisdom as to how to fulfill the goals God gives you; 3) rely on God’s strength to help you; 4) find an accountability partner who will help you and encourage you; 5) don’t become discouraged with occasional failures; instead, allow them to motivate you further; 6) don’t become proud or vain, but give God the glory. Psalm 37:5-6 says, “Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him and he will do this: He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the noonday sun.”
